Nokia to hold a press event this Thursday
Posted on January 18, 2010 | No CommentsSurprise! There I was, staring at my inbox, wondering when the invites to Apple’s may-or-may-not-be-happening tablet event would go out, when.. BAM! An invite appeared – but not from Apple. Turns out, Nokia’s announcing something big — or at least big enough to hold a press event — this Thursday in San Francisco. The invite doesn’t [...] -
Sprint Overdrive dual-mode WiMAX / EV-DO mobile hotspot leaks into the wild (update: $50 U301 on contract?)
Posted on December 30, 2009 | No CommentsMove over, MiFi -- this Sprint Overdrive dual-mode WiMAX / EV-DO mobile hotspot that just hit our inbox has taken over as our new object of broadband desire. Our tipster says internal training on the Sierra-built device has already begun, and that the unit itself features a microSD slot, support for location services, and has a 100-foot Wi-Fi range -- but sadly we don't have pricing or availability deets to share yet. We're hoping we find out more at CES -- and we'd bet that new dual-mode U301 WiMAX modem that leaked a couple weeks ago makes an appearance as well. Fingers crossed.
Update: The same tipster that sent us the information to start with is back with a few tidbits on the U301. According to the anonymous individual, that USB modem will be launching in February for $49.99 on contract. Also on the horizon? A WiMAX home desktop modem with a special price plan of its own.Sprint Overdrive dual-mode WiMAX / EV-DO mobile hotspot leaks into the wild (update: $50 U301 on contract?) originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 30 Dec 2009 16:32:00 EST. Apple Bans Another Developer, 1000+ Apps Pulled
Posted on December 7, 2009 | No CommentsAs the old mantra goes, “Cheaters never prosper”. In this digital age, it may be time to revise that saying. Granted a veil of anonymity by the Internet, cheaters surely prosper from their cheating; it’s just that when they get caught, they go down hard. Alas, “Cheaters may temporarily prosper – but if they get [...] -
Oops! Verizon’s update for the Samsung Trance allegedly breaks things
Posted on December 3, 2009 | No Comments
After we found out about the Samsung Trance's then-impending software update a little early, I honestly didn't expect to hear about it again. If things had gone smoothly, I probably wouldn't have.

Smartphone Showdown: iPhone 3GS vs. Motorola Droid Round 2
Posted on November 6, 2009 | No Comments
My inbox is in pain. Almost immediately after I hit the publish button on last week's iPhone 3GS vs Motorola Droid Smartphone Showdown, a torrential blast of comments and questions has been barraging just about every communication inlet I've got. Phone calls. Twitter DMs. Lots, and lots, and lots of emails. Across the board, it all seems to indicate one thing: people want more.
We hear you. There are a number of worthwhile topics I simply didn't get a chance to touch on, and a few observations I've made since that are worth mentioning. For those, may we present: Round 2.

Rumor: Verizon Storm 2 launching Oct. 28th at $179.99?
Posted on October 23, 2009 | No Comments
It's almost depressing to see how far out of their way Verizon is going -- knowingly or not -- to tone down the launch of the BlackBerry Storm2 on their network. The normal pre-launch fanfare (Mailers and posters and contests, oh my!) is non-existent. At this point, they're not even giving the device its own launch day.

GSM-flavored Motorola Droid passes through the FCC
Posted on October 16, 2009 | No Comments
Last night, a bunch of strange tips slammed our inbox, all talking about the Motorola Sholes (otherwise known as the Tao, or more recently, the Verizon Motorola Droid.) "Motorola just tried to sneak the Sholes through the FCC!" they read, highlighting the fact that in this recent report, Motorola only mentions Sholes by name once - and it's about as subtle of a mention as can be. But that, in itself, isn't what seemed strange. What was strange was that the Motorola Sholes already cleared the FCC last month, in Verizon-ready CDMA form.
So we looked a bit closer, and sure enough, there they were: GSM frequencies.

Sidekick Outages Could Have Cost Microsoft Over $700,000 Per Day
Posted on October 15, 2009 | No CommentsSince the Great Sidekick Disaster of 2009, there’s been a nearly endless torrent of tips on the matter barraging our inbox. Some weren’t so much “tips” as they were “mindless rants”, while others were obviously just angry customers looking to make stuff up. Recently, however, a source which has proven itself reliable in the past has [...] -
Peek offers disgruntled Sidekick owners a free Pronto, internet high-five
Posted on October 14, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, Others, T-Mobile, Danger
As Microsoft and Apple have so precisely demonstrated, there's nothing like a face full of egg to make the competition fire up the sucker punch machine. Take Peek, for example, who is now offering angered Sidekick users (you know, the ones that probably lost all of their data recently) a gratis Pronto for their trouble. All that's required is an image of you, a frowny face, your wiped Sidekick and a T-Mobile bill -- once that's sent over to Peek's dedicated inbox, you'll soon receive your Pronto in the mail. 'Course, it's up to you to foot the $20 monthly bill for keeping the thing active, but hey, free's free.
