SlingPlayer Mobile for Android teased on an EVO 4G

It looks like those private beta rumors earlier this month were legit, seeing how Sling Media is now officially showing off its latest SlingPlayer Mobile incarnation on HTC's lovely EVO 4G for Sprint. The company is boasting that the app has the fastest load time of any version of SlingPlayer Mobile to date -- and we can't imagine that WiMAX hurts, either -- so this should be the perfect accessory to your EVO 4G purchase when the phone launches early next month. It's not clear yet what other Android devices will be compatible with the software, but we imagine Sling will be saying more soon, so stay tuned.

Android 2.2 Froyo: everything you ever wanted to know

Since its initial launch on the T-Mobile G1 in October of 2008, Google's Android operating system has evolved rapidly -- perhaps more rapidly than any other operating system in recent memory -- to become one of the most important and prolific smartphone platforms in the market today. Its latest incarnation, announced at Google's I/O conference in San Francisco this week, began life as codename "Froyo" (continuing its tradition of naming new versions as desserts in alphabetical order, starting with Cupcake) to officially become Android 2.2. Don't be fooled by the mere 0.1 boost in the version number over 2.1 Eclair, though -- this is a huge upgrade that represents the most user-friendly, compelling, and feature-complete version of the little green guy to date. Read on for our full look!

The PSP 2 will be ‘[expletive] powerful’

There will be a PSP 2. No, not some sort of halfway sequel, à la the PSP Go, but an actual, holy smokes PSP 2. That's the rumor, and you'd have to assume that's the case. But the specifics of the rumor, today's incarnation of the rumor, that is, is that the device will be "[expletive] powerful." That's pretty powerful!

Microsoft had tried to shutdown the original Xbox Live servers, but a couple of Halo 2 stalwarts had refused to log off! I guess Microsoft couldn't turn the servers off, or wouldn't, while people were still connected? No matter: the last Halo 2 Xbox Live player has signed off. We wish him well in his future endeavors.

iTiki iPhone Case…Um, something is wrong with me, because I kinda want one?

Anytime the press release for a new product says something like this, I’m bound to pay attention: iTiki™ is a South Pacific deity from the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii, who protects iPhones from enemies. iTiki is more than just the original tiki-based iPhone case. It’s the silicone incarnation of the same spirit who, according to [...]

This Nintendo 3DS concept looks like a DS and PSP offspring

We've always admired the PSP's sleek exterior, but loved the DS's fun games. We're weird like that. But maybe, although it's highly unlikely, the next DS incarnation will combine some of the PSP's trademark style with the DS's functionality. If so, the 3DS would probably look something like this concept art.

Mac-in-news Morning Round-up: Touch my Bezel

Patents patents patents! OK. Only two. Apple may be adding touch sensitive corners to the iPad’s bezel (not in its current incarnation, though) which may allow for hot corners. These would be identified by little flags that pop up on the screen. Next? A clever little hack that may add Wii-like functionality to the Apple TV [...]

  • Sony Ericsson Xperia Pureness hands-on

    Sony Ericsson Xperia Pureness hands-on

Occasionally, a phone exists simply because it can. Not because it's powerful; not because it offers amazing bang for the buck; not because the manufacturer negotiated some lucrative exclusivity agreement with a major carrier, and certainly not because it's introducing some groundbreaking new smartphone operating system. Yeah -- not even Sony Ericsson is attempting to frame or formulate a legitimate business case for the sinfully hedonistic Xperia Pureness, because they don't have to. One look at that wild transparent display and you'll either be smitten or confused and dismayed by the $1,000 sticker price. It's that simple.

Anyhow, we've just taken delivery of a Pureness today and have had a few fleeting moments to check it out. If it weren't for the screen, you'd be looking at a $30 prepaid candybar here -- you don't have a camera, a high-res display, or any sexy metal or soft-touch bits to give the phone a premium feel. The UI is about the simplest possible incarnation of Sony Ericsson's typical dumbphone platform, owing largely to the fact that the display's just grayscale; you've got an FM radio (with a headset attached) and a basic music player and browser, but if you're in North America, don't expect any 3G.

That said, seriously, look at that shot we took up there: the display is insane. We can't quite get over it -- it's the ultimate conversation piece. Motorola Aura owners looking for a fresh way to draw a crowd might look at this as their next purchase, but if you're looking to do anything but talk (and occasionally browse an eerily translucent version of Engadget), make no mistake, this isn't your phone. Did we mention we want one really, really badly?

  • Saygus VPhone to bring video calls and a bit of chub to Android and Verizon

Saygus VPhone to bring video calls and a bit of chub to Android and Verizon

If you know that your personal happiness lies somewhere in the Verizon / Android abyss but neither the Droid nor the Droid Eris are hitting the spot, you might consider trying something completely out of left field. How "left field" are we talking here? Well, for starters, odds are good that you've never heard of a company called Saygus, and its shiny new QWERTY slider, the VPhone, won't be offered directly from Verizon -- it's a product of the carrier's Open Development initiative. Sure enough, that handset we spied a few days back is real, and the specs are all panning out: 624MHz PXA310 XScale core, 512MB of Flash on board coupled with 256MB of RAM, 3.5-inch capacitive WVGA touchscreen, WiFi, a 5 megapixel autofocus camera, front-facing VGA camera and -- of course -- EV-DO Rev. A support. The current incarnation is running Android 1.6, but it should be running 2.0 by the time of its launch next year, along with getting some Google-certification to let it run the Google apps. Saygus' real thrust here is apparently two-way video calling (good thing they picked Verizon, huh?), though they aren't showing it off just yet. The hardware itself is rather chubby, but it leaves room for an oversized QWERTY keyboard that could very well solve your Droid woes. No word on price or a firm release date.

The BlackBerry Storm 2 makes an appearance on Verizon’s website

Besides the CEO touting the BlackBerry Storm 2 around for some impromptu demos, Verizon hasn't exactly acknowledged the phone's existence. There have been rumors that it's because the Storm 2 still doesn't live up to Verizon's standards or it could simply be that Verizon doesn't want to take the attention off of the Motorola Droid. Whatever the case maybe, the BlackBerry Storm 2 will probably be made official sometime real soon.
