    iPhone app review: GoodReader

One of the things I've always wanted to do with my smartphone -- whether it was my original Palm Treo 650, or my current iPhone -- was to read books while on-the-go. Unfortunately, the screens on these smartphones have all been way too small to make reading comfortable for anything more than a screenful or two. Even reading long email messages can be a strain on my eyes. It doesn't help that many e-books are formatted for a full screen, so they require vertical and horizontal scrolling to read. Thankfully, GoodReader exists, and only costs a buck.

Here's a fun activity to pass the time at work. Well, maybe "fun" is stretching it a little bit but it's an activity nonetheless. Now try to find which site has gone the most gaga over iPad news by the total number of times "iPad" appears on the front page. A few front runners, as of around noon Eastern:

  • The PC is dead, long live the PC!

The PC is dead, long live the PC!

If you've been paying any attention to computing technology for more than a couple of years, chances are strong that you've noticed some trends. The trade rags and industry analysts make their money predicting these trends -- or trying to, at any rate -- but it's pretty easy to see for yourself how many of these trends develop. The hot technology when I was a wee Desktop Technician was thin client computing. Dumb terminals on desks would connect to servers in the back room where all the actual computing would occur. To read the trade rags, you'd think my job security was in danger! Obviously thin client computing didn't completely change the face of computing in general. Nor will many of the other trends being predicted by industry experts.

  • Oh boy: World of Warcraft Patch 3.3 goes live today

Oh boy: World of Warcraft Patch 3.3 goes live today

Tuesdays usually stink for World of Warcraft. The servers go down early in the morning for maintenance, and then stay down well after the scheduled time more often than you'd care to see. Today doesn't stink, since Patch 3.3 is indeed dropping. I cannot wait to leave the terribly fancy TC/CG office, get home, fire up the game, then PUG till the sun comes up.

Nokia Takes Apple To Court. If You Can’t Beat ‘Em, Sue ‘Em.

harvey Nokia has filed a compaint against Apple for infringing on its GSM, UMTS, and WiFi "standards," which is as absolutely vague as it sounds. While Nokia states that forty vendors have licensed its patents in these areas there is no mention of the specific instances of infringement and, given that GSM, UMTS, and WiFi are the defacto standards for GSM-based phones across the board it's hard to tell what Nokia's real problem is here.

  • Blizzard has defeated the Door Boss!

Blizzard has defeated the Door Boss!

Good news, everyone. It looks like Blizzard has finally defeated the Door Boss. That is, you should no longer, or not as frequently, run into the “additional instances cannot be launched” glitch. It truly is a time for celebration.

  • Don’t worry, Blizzard is trying to defeat the Door Boss once and for all. At least we think it’s trying.

Don’t worry, Blizzard is trying to defeat the Door Boss once and for all. At least we think it’s trying.

The Door Boss is a new phenomenon in World of Warcraft. You face him when you try to enter an Instance, only to find the error message, “Additional instances cannot be launched, please try again later.” It's quite annoying when all you want to do is run through, say, BFD once before you go to bed.

  • Phil Schiller Is A Man On A Mission: To Save The App Store

Phil Schiller Is A Man On A Mission: To Save The App Store

As Apple's Senior Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing, you'd have to imagine that Phil Schiller is a pretty busy guy. He's also been moonlighting as Apple's keynote speaker during Steve Jobs' medical leave of absence. But now it's really starting to look as if Schiller has taken on another task: App Store savior. We've already talked at length about the two instances in the past week or so of Schiller personally reaching out to bloggers to set the record straight about a few of the App Store issues. But he has actually taken it a step farther. He's also been reaching out to individual app makers to talk to them about their apps and offer his assistance in getting them approved, we've learned tonight. And one such app, Rising Card, is now available in the App Store thanks to Schiller.
