Survey: Apple products totally popular with the rich kids

Growing up, was there anything worse than being called a rich kid? Granted, it was probably just a case of petty jealousy—I wish I had a power wheel!—but man oh man did the rich kid win no friends. Fast-forward a few years, and the rich kid isn't just flaunting his new lunchbox and Spider-Man sneakers, no sir: he's driving a brand new car and checking his Facebook on his shiny, new iPhone 3G S. Or, a long way of say the obvious: Apple products are popular with kids from wealthy parents.

Crooks clear out an Apple store in 31 seconds

Crooks broke into a New Jersey Apple store and took 23 MacBook Pros, 14 iPhones, and nine iPods. By the time the roly-poly security guard saunters back in the crooks have broken the window, taken the haul, and run back out. It clearly looks like these boys have been practicing this run. Also, I’m no Jason [...]

How Sony can beat the Kindle, provided it can find its shoes and its glasses after it wakes up

Farhad Manjoo has a nice "what-if" story up on Slate about what Sony can do to beat the Kindle. Sadly, what Manjoo is doing here is akin to helping a little old crazy lady across the street - at best his advice will be ignore and and worst he'll be cursed out. He basically writes:
Anyone looking to beat the Kindle, then, should look to the iPod: Study everything that Apple's rivals did, and do the opposite.

Whitoken, a beautiful iPod Touch theme

Huh. This is actually an iPod Touch theme for jailbroken iPods and it’s just about the coolest one I’ve ever seen. It looks like a bear to implement, though, and the creator is posting it tomorrow as far as I can tell and it apparently works with WinterBoard, the theme system for jailbroken iPods. via Giz

  • Another day, another Apple Tablet rumor or How I stopped worrying and learned to love the Tapplet UPDATE

Another day, another Apple Tablet rumor or How I stopped worrying and learned to love the Tapplet UPDATE

It's nice that the Apple Tablet - we're calling it the Tapplet - rumors are circulating. August is a horrible time for tech. There's not much out there right now, just a few headsets and some early back-to-school stuff. The retail refresh hasn't hit - that comes in about October - and the Interwebs are quiet. It's great to have a little bit of frisson in our lives, something to put on our Christmas lists. With that we present today's Tapplet rumors. First, we have rumor of a September 7 event at Apple HQ for music devices. This is Apple's traditional time for releasing new music gear. It's just before back-to-school and it gives them a little time to get stuff into the retail space by October, just when kids are starting to break the iPods they got last year. So what could it be? Could it be a new iPod? iPods with cameras? Or it might be... UPDATE - Whoa, now Gruber knows about the new iPods:
the new camera-equipped ones Apple is set to announce next month (16/32/64 GB for $199/299/399).

Apple sold 5.2 million iPhones last quarter

Haters be damned: like it or not, the iPhone just won’t stop selling. This quarter’s results, boosted by the release of the iPhone 3GS, absolutely demolished results of quarter’s past (well, except for Q4 of last year). Fresh off today’s Apple’s earnings call for the third fiscal quarter of 2009: Apple pushed 5.2 million iPhones [...]

iPhone 3GS Discoloration Might Be Symptom of Faulty Cases

A small number of iPhone 3GS owners have reported browning of their handsets presumably due to overheating. However, a report suggests the problem is tied to third-party cases. iPhone blog FrenchiPhone cites an Apple technician who laid blame at the covers of some iPhone 3GS units. “After numerous calls to Apple technical service and maintenance of contact [...]

Leaked Case Designs May Predict Future iPod Cameras

Remember the iPhone Nano? It was a sure thing, based on designs of silicon cases leaked by a third party manufacturer. Oh, wait. No it wasn’t. The fire of speculation licked higher as the gasoline of rumor was sloshed and splattered around the internet, only to fizzle under the halon blanket of Apple’s silence. Then again, [...]

  • Prepare Yourself For iPod Video

    Prepare Yourself For iPod Video

Like most people who've had an iPhone 3GS in their hands, we've been extremely impressed with the video capabilities of this little device. Not only Does it take near-HD video, it has excellent basic editing software and video can be uploaded to YouTube over Wifi or the cell networks. Among other things, it is the most useful video camera in the world today. No wonder the video camera market is shaking in its collective boots. Thank God those iPhones are so expensive, and Apple will only sell 20 million or so of them in 2009. If Apple added cameras to its line of iPods, there would be another 3+million of them hitting the market per month, and the low end of the digital video camera market could be crushed. Uh oh. That's exactly what we're hearing is going to happen. One of our sources in Asia say that Apple has placed an order for a massive number of camera modules of the type that they include in the iPhone. These are inexpensive cameras, in the $10 range. And the size of the order, our source says, means they can only be used for one thing - the iPods.

You have to give it up to the Sony engineers and designers behind these two, new iPod docks. Both new audio systems are swanky as hell and the one pictured above with the large remote almost seems worthy of it’s $1000 USD price tag - almost.

Battery Issues Likely Cause of iPhone 3GS Overheating

Just a week after the release of Apple’s new iPhone, a few owners have complained about the handset’s high temperatures, which in some cases are high enough to start browning the white plastic on the back of the phone. Only a small number of iPhone 3GS customers have reported their handsets are reaching very high temperatures. [...]

  • Some website: “iPods are not good wedding gifts”

Some website: “iPods are not good wedding gifts”

I'm writing this up because of how delightfully ham-handed it is, which suggests their tactic worked. Basically, some "gadget matchmaker" service called Retrevo ran a study asking newlyweds what gadgets they wanted as wedding gifts. 38% wanted a camcorder, 24% wanted a digitial camera, and 2% wanted an MP3 player. I suspect thats because anyone at marriageable age right now - including those weird states where you can marry your cousin at 16 (looking at you, Delaware!) - already has an MP3 player. Note there is no sample size mentioned so they probably asked their immediate family, making the entire process slightly statistically unsavory.
