Murata develops world’s first waterproof, ultra-thin piezoelectric speakers

Kyoto-based Murata has developed the world's first piezoelectric speaker that not only is waterproof but also ultra-thin (0.9mm). The devices are meant to be mainly used with mobile phones, which makes sense, given that almost 25% of the 50 latest cell phones released (on the Japanese market, at least) are actually waterproof.

First sales survey indicates iPad is big hit in Japan

The iPhone turned out to be a mega-hit in Japan's competitive cell phone market, and the iPad is poised to replicate this success. Tokyo-based market research firm BCN [JP] today said Apple's share of the domestic notebook market more than tripled in May (on a month-to-month basis) to reach 11.5% - thanks to the iPad.

Panasonic starts taking orders for its 152-inch, 4K plasma 3D TV

And today, the same company announced [press release in English] it will start accepting orders for another batch of three new 3D plasma TVs on July 1. Targeted at "professional users", these TVs are bigger. Much bigger.

And yet another 3D news item from Japan. This time, it's Panasonic, which today announced [JP] two new 3D plasma TVs, the 42-inch TH-P42VT2, and the 46-inch TH-P46VT2. Both VIERAs require active shutter glasses to view images in 3D and both feature full HD resolution.

Sanyo last week announced the DMX-CA100 for the Japanese market, the world's first waterproof full HD camcorder "for consumer use with optical zoom lenses" (Kodak has released a simpler model just recently). NEC to ship Blu-ray powered 3D PC in Japan next month

The company's faster than expected: just last month, NEC teased such a machine in Tokyo, saying it's likely to ship by October 2010. But Japan will get the PC as early as next month. And it appears to be a pretty cool machine.

Panasonic announced [JP] a set of two new VIERA TVs for the Japanese market today, the 37-inch TH-L37R2B and the 32-inch TH-L32R2B. And they somehow managed to squeeze quite a few features and functions into the LCDs, most notably Skype support, a 320 GB HDD and a Blu-ray recorder.

New Pioneer speaker system can link to 2 iPods or iPhones

Pioneer is about to release yet another iPhone-compatible speaker system. The company yesterday announced [JP] the XW-NAC1 in Japan, a speaker system that can connect to and alternately play music from two iPods or iPhones. The XW-NAC1 has two iPod/iPhone docks that charge these devices simultaneously.

It's not that there's a shortage of mobile projectors, but when DoCoMo (Japan's biggest cell phone carrier) announces [JP] a model for its 55 million customers, it deserves a mention. DoCoMo specifically suggests using the F01 with Fujitsu's uber-cool "Separate Keitai", a cell phone that breaks into two parts (and that's currently available on the Japanese market only).

Virtually every Japanese tech company has made some 3D-related announcement in the past months, but one remained suspiciously quiet in that area: NEC.
