Is the Android Market down for you? (update: it’s back)

As I began the process of tearing into our brand new Droid X review unit, I ran through the nearly endless mental laundry list of all my favorite Android apps. “I’m totally going to install all of these“, I thought. Only one problem: The Android Market wasn’t showing any apps. None. No Yammers, no Yelps, [...]

  • FCC’s Spectrum Task Force makes first snatch-and-grab, kidnaps up to 90MHz from satellite band

FCC’s Spectrum Task Force makes first snatch-and-grab, kidnaps up to 90MHz from satellite band

Even if you're the Federal Communications Commission, freeing up half a gigahertz of wireless spectrum isn't an easy task, but things become easier when you have top men on the job. The FCC's freshly deputized Spectrum Task Force may have just proven its worth, by shifting up to 90MHz from mobile satellite services to cellular broadband. To placate those who might be opposed to the measure, the FCC says it "remains firmly committed" to rural, emergency and government satellites, plus points out precedents like the SkyTerra LTE deal in March... but interestingly the Task Force neither mentions support for commercial satellite uses, nor which companies stand to gain the freed spectrum this time. Full press release after the break.

Terror in Taipei: Computex taxi drivers watch live TV, video chat while cruising

It's a Christmas miracle that Joanna and I survived the week in Taipei. Not because our brains nearly exploded from the wealth of non-functioning Windows 7 tablets we saw, but because most of our cab drivers found themselves -- um, preoccupied -- while on the job. Over here, deep within a WiMAX hotspot, it's not uncommon to see cabbies video chatting and watching live local TV over-the-air while driving, and since you'd never believe me sans pics, I've got a handful of those as proof. Call it culture shock, or call it reckless -- we're calling it "America needs to get with the program and catch up to Asia."

GPS 800G watch phone gets the job done (and little else)

Watch phones clearly haven't hit the mainstream yet, though a resurgence of Dick Tracy may very well turn that around. Given that we're probably years, if not centuries, away from that happening, it's up to niche import shops like Alibaba to bring us goods like these. The GPS 800G -- delivered by none other than Shanghai Zhiyuan Vacuum Electric Company, of course -- manages to handle time telling, texting, GPS routing and even emergency calling. Oh, and normal calling as well. Looks as if you'll need to ping the supplier in order to get a lock on pricing, but we can't say with a straight face that it'll be worth your while.

British garbage collectors to get 1,500 BlackBerrys

First it was the rozzers, now British bin men are getting BlackBerrys as part of their job equipment pack. Biffa, a private garbage collection firm responsible for cleaning up 25 local authorities around the UK, has agreed a £1.7 million ($2.44 million) deal with Vodafone for the provision of some 1,500 BlackBerry handsets along with dongles and 3G data cards. This somewhat curious capital investment has been made in order to allow drivers to download maps, collect data from customers, liaise with head office, and even take photos where necessary. The RIM phones will also allow Biffa to track its trucks' locations -- an option that's sure to get plenty of use, considering how much Brits love to keep an eye on things.

  • Duroflash LED road lights effectively replace flares

Duroflash LED road lights effectively replace flares

Forget about roadside flares. You don't need them anymore now that there's a gadget that can do the same thing. The Duroflash LEDs are simple little lights that do the same job but better. They're waterproof, super bright, available in several colors, and can support up to 20,000 lbs. But they're a bit pricey, and so chances are you're not going to see your local police officers using these if there are budget issues. Each one is $180. Yeah, pricey. But at least their storage case doubles as a recharging station. Simply take one out and it turns on. Plug it back in, it turns off and resumes recharging. That's nifty, but the high starting price might make some companies resistant at first. Click through for a quick video demo.

Open thread: WTF is going on with Lost

John and I are fed up with Lost. We don't know what the hell is going on anymore. The show is supposed to be wrapping up soon, but each new epsisode presents more questions than it answers. We need some help. Here are our two biggest questions we're hoping someone can answer. 1: Is island Desmond the same person as alternate-reality Desmond. Like are they of one mind and conscience? 2: What job are the Losties applicants for? It doesn't make sense that it's Jacob's role because then Jacob would have had to know he was going to die in order to qualify and observe certain people their entire life. So what's going on here? We have so many other questions like who that boy with the stick was and how/why the island had the big gear underground, but it's those two that are bothering us the most. Help?

Goodbye, Norma Jean: Apple’s “Get a Mac” Ads are over

Of two things I was always sure: that people would not talk to me at parties and that Apple's "Get a Mac" ads would be around forever. I imagined showing my grandchildren the ads in 2040, explaining that once, a long time ago, the animated corpse of John Hodgman used to be a real man and now as he capers about on our 3D holoscreen talking about the PC's lack of a fission reactor power supply, gobbets of preserved flesh strung up like a puppet on a skeleton of titanium, well, you can still see some of that same schlubby good humor in that soulless meat pop that I enjoyed back in 2010, before the Happening. That will never happen, people. Apple is discontinuing the campaign. In an interview with AV Club Long said that Apple hasn't brought them back into the studio in a long while and that he believes they're going to "move on."

It's not often we get thanked for stuff we do here, so this little email this morning was quite refreshing. DIY: Convert a disposable camera into a slave flash

Buying a flash unit can be expensive, but here's a cheapskate alternative that will do the job, at least for a while. Plus, you're recycling a disposable camera into something reusable, and saving all those bits from the landfill. Besides, once you use all of the flash out of one disposable camera, you can always build another one to replace it, and recycle the first one.
