Apple: White iPhone 4 Won’t Be Available Until Second Half Of July

Apple just released a statement saying that the white iPhone 4 will not be available until the second half of July due to manufacturing challenges. It's unclear from the statement what those challenges are. Apple said that the shortage of the white iPhones will not affect supply of the more popular black models. But for those of you who were pining for a white device, you will have to wait until the second half of July. The iPhone 4 was available for pre-order in Black starting June 15. At that point, it was assumed you'd be able to purchase the white model of the phone in stores on June 24.

Pre-ordered your iPhone 4 at Radio Shack? Sucks to be you – UPDATE

We're getting reports from some folks who tried to work around the massive fail-up during last week's pre-order fiasco and pre-order from Radio Shack, Best Buy, and Wal-Mart. The reports aren't good. It seems that most stores will not have them in stock tomorrow and that you should probably check with your pre-order store before you head down. One reader, DW, writes:
Hello, I just wanted to let you guys know that I spoke with the Manager of the RadioShack store that I pre-ordered my iPhone from and he let me know that none of the customers who pre-ordered an iPhone 4 would be getting one from his store tomorrow (Thursday).

  • Some iPhone 4s Begin Arriving A Full 2 Days Early

Some iPhone 4s Begin Arriving A Full 2 Days Early

As you may have read last night, Apple started emailing people who pre-ordered the iPhone 4 to let them know that it may arrive a day early. While the rest of us have to wait for June 24, those who opted to get the device delivered, should get it as soon as tomorrow, the email says. But actually, if FedEx's tracking system is correct (and that may be a big "if"), some people may actually get the iPhone 4 today. As you can see in the screenshot, FedEx is alerting some customers that the iPhone 4 is "On FedEx vehicle for delivery." In this particular instance, this is an iPhone that has been sitting in Oakland for a day, so it's not clear why it would be on a FedEx truck unless they were actually delivering it. Others on Twitter are seeing the same thing.

Still Really Want An iPhone 4? Find $5,000, Head To eBay

As you may have heard, Apple completely blew through its pre-order launch day iPhone 4s in less than a day (and that was despite major technical issues with the ordering process). It has now blown through the second wave (due in early July) as well. The current shipping estimate if you order right now is July 14. Ugh. But if you absolutely want one at or around launch day, the Internet, as always, provides an option. Scanning eBay right now, there are roughly 400 iPhone 4s for sale (between the 16 GB and 32 GB models). Sure, the device isn't out yet, but people are willing to part with the device as soon as they get it on June 24. The question is: how much do you have to pay to get them to part with it? Currently, the cheapest ones are going for $550 -- and that's the $199 16 GB model. The cheapest 32 GB model? $799 -- a full $500 over the $299 retail price.

  • Apple iPhone 4 pre-orders now sold out?

Apple iPhone 4 pre-orders now sold out?

We have no idea how this happened given the insane problems Apple and AT&T have had processing iPhone 4 pre-orders today, but lots of people (including us) are seeing a July 2 ship date at Apple's online store, or about a week after the next-gen iPhone launches on June 24. Frankly, that's amazing -- we can only imagine the kind of sustained rush it took to cause a sellout of a product virtually no one was actually able to order. So that's Apple and AT&T both sold out -- at this point it's looking like standing in line somewhere come launch day is going to be your best bet, but we'll let you know if we hear any better news.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

  • AT&T sold out of iPhone 4 pre-orders for launch day

AT&T sold out of iPhone 4 pre-orders for launch day

BGR's reporting that AT&T's launch day allocation of iPhone 4s is now sold out, and anyone who got in the door after 1:30PM Pacific Time will get their unit some time between June 25 and July 5. Frankly, we have no idea how anyone managed to get a pre-order in, let alone enough to sell out -- but everyone who did deserves a pat on the back and a high-five.

Update: We've gotten the official statement from AT&T, and it's true, though you still might be able to waltz in on launch day without a pre-order and pick up one of the unallocated units:
"Because of the incredible interest in iPhone 4, today was the busiest online sales day in AT&T history. As of Tuesday afternoon, customers who preorder iPhone 4 moving forward will receive their device on June 25 or later, depending on when the order is placed. We'll email customers with confirmation once their order is placed, and again when it ships. In addition, we will have devices available on a first-come, first-serve basis in our stores beginning on June 24."

  • iPhone 4 coming to Three UK, pre-orders starting June 15

iPhone 4 coming to Three UK, pre-orders starting June 15

And just like that, the UK has turned into a veritable treasure trove of carrier choice. Three has just announced that it too will be carrying Apple's latest iPhone starting from June 24, expanding on the options to be provided by O2, Orange, Vodafone and, most recently, T-Mobile. That's now the complete set of five UK networks all ready to take your name and credit card number on launch day, while Three is also the first to announce its pre-order start date -- which it places at June 15, the same time that Americans will be able to pre-order. Three's strategy in the UK has usually been to undercut the big dogs with alluring pricing, so next week should be a very interesting time for British iPhone lovers indeed.

  • iPhone 4 confirms June 24 date with O2, Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone in UK

iPhone 4 confirms June 24 date with O2, Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone in UK

Good news for non-America: O2 UK has become the first international carrier to confirm it'll have the iPhone 4 ready for purchase and adoration on launch day, June 24. After the iPad gave preferential treatment to the US with its release schedule, some might have feared the similarly hot piece of tech Apple just announced today will also suffer from a tiered launch. It's looking like Brits won't have to worry about that particular pain, but it's also curious that Vodafone and Orange -- the other local carriers of the iPhone -- are remaining mum tonight. Is Apple lending a hand to its old partner by allowing it early stock? That wouldn't be entirely unfathomable, though it would be pretty unpleasant for impatient types who fancy some carrier choice.

Update: Never mind that whole conspiracy theory: we've just seen that Orange is also throwing its hat into the June 24 ring -- let's keep this momentum going, guys! [Thanks, Blizzard]

Update 2: And now Tech Radar has heard direct from Vodafone that June 24 is a go, giving us a complete Brit pack.

    Update 3
: Hey, what do you know? T-Mobile UK's getting it too. Choice is good.
