Posted on June 10, 2010 | No Comments
We all know that the Android tsunami is upon us, but I still find it amazing just how many devices are being released by manufacturers.
Today, LG announced that it will launch not 5, not 10, but 20 Android handsets by the end of this year. 20.

Four big carriers targeting LiMo phone releases this year
Posted on May 20, 2010 | No CommentsHey, remember LiMo? Yeah, us neither, but the stealthiest of major mobile platform coalitions is back in the spotlight today on news that four top global carriers -- France Telecom's Orange, Telefonica (presumably via O2 and Movistar), Verizon, and Korea's SKT will all be launching LiMo-based phones by year-end. As a refresher, Big Red jointed the LiMo Foundation way back in 2008, so it's interesting to see that they're still looking to play ball; the platform has typically been billed as more of a carrier-facing initiative than a consumer-facing one, so realistically, end users are likely going to perceive nothing other than a little more dumbphone synergy across the lineup than they do now. Android, Windows Phone, iPhone, webOS... you guys are free to carry on.Four big carriers targeting LiMo phone releases this year originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Thu, 20 May 2010 13:40:00 EST. Koreans watch Avatar in “4D”
Posted on February 8, 2010 | No Comments
One important factor that can explain Avatar's success at the box office is certainly the 3D experience viewers can have when they walk into the right movie theater. But what about watching Avatar in "4D"? In Korea, you can.
The nation's leading multiplex chain, CJ-CGV, runs a handful of so-called "4D plexes" where the experience includes moving seats, laser lights or wind. In the case of Avatar, CJ-CGV uses a total of 30 different "real-life" effects to add some excitement to the movie.

The iPhone rules Japan’s smartphone market. Android and Blackberry almost non-existent.
Posted on December 17, 2009 | No Comments
It's big in Korea, it's probably big in China's grey market, and the iPhone continues to be big in Japan. According to a report [JP] released by Tokyo-based research company Impress R&D, the iPhone has captured a whopping 46.1% of the domestic smartphone market.

iPhone in Korea off to a good start
Posted on December 7, 2009 | No Comments
The iPhone officially went on sale in China at the end of October and in Japan in summer last year, but many people in one important Asian market were still waiting for it the whole time: Korea. After getting the official government approval in mid-November, the country’s number two mobile carrier, KT Corporation, started rolling out the iPhone on November 28. And it can be happy about a pretty successful roll-out.

LG to announce Snapdragon-boasting Android phone, Korea-bound in 2010
Posted on November 6, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, LG, Android
It's looking like LG will be offering an Android phone boasting Qualcomm's hot Snapdragon chip -- which has recently squeezed its way into handsets such as the Xperia X10 and Acer's Liquid. The new LG mobile phone is expected for the Korean market in the second quarter of 2010. While the device is still unnamed and specs are still a mystery, LG is promising that the device will be "more mature" than the GW620 Eve, an Android device announced earlier this week for Rogers in Canada. There's no solid word on what availability of the device will be like, though LG says its considering possibilities outside of Korea.

First Impressions: Samsung Reclaim
Posted on August 10, 2009 | No CommentsAs we mentioned earlier, we got a big box of (partially) recycled goods today. In just a few days, Sprint will be launching Samsung’s “Green” phone, the Reclaim. We put “Green” in quotes here because it’s somewhat questionable just how eco-friendly this phone is. It’s greener than most phones, yes. A step in the right [...] -
The Viliv S7’s battery gets tested in Korea
Posted on July 18, 2009 | No Comments
Viliv went all official on the S7 a couple of weeks ago. The hot convertible tablet definitely sparked my interest, especially the 4700mAh lithium polymer batter that is said to have up to 9.5 hours. That's hot. Well, some folks in Korea got their hands on the portable and put that battery to the test. The results really aren't that surprising.

Someone has seen the Samsung NX-10!
Posted on July 8, 2009 | No CommentsThis is something special. Someone has allegedly seen a mock-up of the Samsung NX10, a digital camera of some sort, at a Korean trade show. There's not photos to speak of, and no real specs. Just a forum post saying, essentially: Hey, I saw it. Believe me.

Samsung debuts the eco-friendly “finger-slim” XL2370 LED HD monitor
Posted on July 6, 2009 | No Comments
Today in Korea, Samsung announced an eco-friendly full HD LED monitor, the XL2370. It’s said to have a “finger-slim” design, but the press release makes no mention of how thick it actually is. But we do know that the XL2370 has a “mega dynamic” contrast ratio of 5M:1, 2ms response time and 1920x1080 resolution. Oh, and it has “Starlight Touch Controls.”

File this one under "Ideas, Good" and wonder why is hasn't been done before. Actually it may very-well have been done before but just in case it hasn't, here's a padded laptop sleeve that, when opened, provides a nice big mousepad.
