Protect your iDevice from theft. Sorta
Posted on June 12, 2010 | No Comments
So you're at the coffee shop, and you've walked over to the counter to order another half-frap-double shot raspberry no fat mocha, and left your iPad (or iPod) plugged into your laptop. Suddenly, that skeevy looking fellow who was sitting two tables away makes a grab for your iPad, and runs for the door! You don't see him because you were looking away, but you still know your kit has been boosted! How do you know? Well, you had the PadLock installed.

Exclusive: Full Resolution iPhone 4 screenshots
Posted on June 7, 2010 | No Comments
It's hard to state just how glorious the iPhone 4's new display is. I'll make a valiant attempt at it in my first impressions post later -- but in the mean time, take a gander at these screenshots.
Pulled straight off of an iPhone 4 and kept at their native resolution, these properly portray just how many pixels Apple has managed to pack into the iPhone 4's "Retina" display. Go ahead, open one up at full size.
On my laptop, they take up the majority of the screen, height-wise. Now imagine all of that squeezed into a 3.5" screen, without a single detail lost in translation.
Yeah, it's pretty gorgeous.

Inventec’s Dr. Eye puts Android in a pocket-sized laptop
Posted on June 3, 2010 | No CommentsIt may sound like a mid-boss in some forgotten and poorly translated NES game, but Dr. Eye (aka the N18C) is actually a sort of keyboard-endowed MID from Inventec. This chubby clamshell sports a QWERTY keyboard, a 4.8-inch VGA touchscreen, 3G, WiFi, and a front-facing webcam. Power is said to come from a "Marvell 624," which we're guessing is a 624MHz PXA310 and, while it's currently running 1.6, word is that it'll be dipped in 2.1's creamy filling in the near future. When will delivery be? Inventec has been showing this guy off since last year, and while the person doing the demonstration indicates they'll be available "pretty soon" at a price point around $400, we found this guy for sale already at a price of 2688 yuan, or about $395. So, if you're eager to get computing and prefer donuts to eclairs, we wish you happy importing.Continue reading Inventec's Dr. Eye puts Android in a pocket-sized laptop

We had huge response yesterday and I’m pleased to report that it was a rousing success. Today, however, I’m going to allow CrunchGear readers a shot at the prize and, instead of being inundated by good-time Sallies and Salvadores, we’ll just post the offer here. Read on, incidently, for yesterday’s winner.

Holy cow! AT&T data tethering revealed in iPhone OS 4.0 beta 4
Posted on May 19, 2010 | No Comments
You heard it right! AT&T have finally given their approval to allow their bazillion or so iPhone users to hook their computer up to AT&T's magical data waves, tether stylee.
Tethering was first introduced as an option in iPhone OS 3.0, but AT&T wouldn't let US users get in on the laptop-on-iPhone action, for fear that their network would explode. So, up until this point, tethering has strictly been an international affair, despite AT&T's looming promise of "soon".

Can’t sleep? Turn off your iPad!
Posted on May 17, 2010 | No CommentsYou're an animal. You're a living creature not too dissimilar from a chimpanzee—well, I guess chimps don't wear sneakers—, and yet you constantly fight your natural instincts. Like, you're meant to be awake, alert and on the ready, during the daytime. The moment the sun begins to set you should be winding down your day. If the sun is down, you should be down, sleeping a deep sleep and giving your body's chemistry a chance to gear up for a new day of hunting and gathering. But no! You lie in bed late at night, staring into your band new iPad, destroying your circadian rhythm in the process. Look out, there's a lion behind you!

Wi-Fi Sync for iPhone video hands-on: it works!
Posted on May 17, 2010 | No CommentsWe just got our hands on Wi-FI Sync and guess what? It actually works -- fancy that! For those of you out of the loop, Apple recently rejected this gem of an app (go figure), but thanks to the magic of jailbreaking, that was hardly the end of the road. Days later, Wi-Fi Sync ended up on Cydia (Mac-only, for now) with a completely-affordable price tag of $9.99, promising iPhone and iPod touch users the ability to sync their device with iTunes sans any cabling whatsoever. Since we're notoriously lazy when it comes to actually plugging in our phones and syncing, we fired up the program on our jailbroken 3GS in order to see exactly what the law-abiders in attendance were missing out on.
Installation couldn't have been easier. We parted ways with our Hamilton, downloaded the necessary companion software for our laptop, and fired up the application. The iPhone was immediately recognized, and after a few prompts we were ready for action. Syncing was just as easy as it normally is (with "easy" being a relative term here), just without that iPod wire hanging around and bumming everyone out. We will say, however, that things weren't as snappy OTA as a standard hardwired connection. It was a bit sluggish on the first couple of runs, and although iTunes crashed a few times (boo), we're fairly confident in saying that a poor WiFi connection was to blame for the jankiness. Once we migrated closer to the router, things went much smoother. Still unsure if it's worth the investment? Then give the video past the break a look.Continue reading Wi-Fi Sync for iPhone video hands-on: it works!

Asus claims 100 percent recyclable laptops (that are made of bamboo)
Posted on May 14, 2010 | No CommentsWhat do you do with a laptop when you're done with it? That's an actual question being that the only laptop I owned before my current old man MacBook is sitting in the closet, broken beyond repair. Now, if I had one of these new Asus laptops, I could, somehow, recycle them. Helping the Earth, one laptop at a time.

Android 2.2 ‘Froyo’ to include USB tethering, WiFi hotspot functionality
Posted on May 13, 2010 | No CommentsAnd the good Froyo news just keep flowing in. TechCrunch have flexed their exclusive muscle this morning in revealing their discovery that Android 2.2 will come with built-in tethering and WiFi hotspot support. That means you'll be able to use your phone's 3G internet connection to hook your laptop up to the worldwide webosphere, with a choice of wired or wireless methods. Of course, this dreamy scenario will be subject to the big bad network operators permitting -- or at least not forbidding -- you to do such awesome things with your hardware, but at least we know the goods are being baked into this forthcoming release from Google. Frozen yogurt for all!Android 2.2 'Froyo' to include USB tethering, WiFi hotspot functionality originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 13 May 2010 05:04:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.
