AT&T data down across the Southeast, Puerto Rico? (update: should be back to normal)

This hasn't exactly been a banner week for wireless uptime; Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon have all seen some trouble over the course of the past few days, and now we're getting tipped that AT&T data services are down once again in the Southeast. Last time, the problems seemed limited to Florida, but now we're hearing that customers spanning from Atlanta to Louisiana are having trouble -- and even Puerto Rico has apparently been pulled into the mess. What's everyone seeing out there?

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Update: Everything should've been back online as of roughly midnight ET last night. Here's the statement we've received from AT&T:
"Due to an earlier equipment issue caused by a fiber cut, some customers in the Southeast region experienced issues with their 3G data service. AT&T technicians quickly worked to resolve the issue, and all service should be up and running. We apologize for any inconvenience to our customers."

Motorola officially announces its weirdo square phone, the Flipout

Motorola love trying out new form factors almost as much as they love SHOUTING, and today's announcement combines both those past times. While we spotted the square phone last month, it's always good to have something officially confirmed. So, without further ado, I present to you the FLIPOUT (also the last time I write it in all caps).

  • PTPT shows off wild Android UI skin, we go hands-on

PTPT shows off wild Android UI skin, we go hands-on

Last time we heard about ExB's PTPT (pronounced "petite petite"), the software startup was just beginning to show off the basics of its touchscreen interface; since then, the small German company has been polishing up the UI and prepping it for Android phones and tablets. According to the CEO Ramin Assadollah, the company is in talks with a "major hardware manufacturer" that's planning on skinning its Android products with the incredibly unique software. We got to see PTPT running on an Android 1.6-powered Acer Liquid while at the Netbook Summit, and though it took us a few minutes to understand how the interface worked, it's definitely interesting and responsive. The input starts with three circular icons representing people, places, and things and then a bar that represents time.

You can simply select an individual person -- you can import contacts from a variety of sources, including, Twitter, Facebook, and so on -- from the halo that appears, and then drag them up to a specific time to get various updates or e-mails from that person. The custom predictive text keyboard in the e-mail interface was very snappy -- it's also just nice to see a change from the stock Android input. Then, you can drag that person to things to see pictures of them. And just like in the original demo, you can then move the pictures icon to a point on the timeline to see pictures from that time. Though the phone and tablet demos we saw didn't have widgets on the homescreen, we were assured that they can be added. We promise this is all better explained in the demo video below, so mosey on down after the jump. We'll be here, wondering what Android devices this software may pop-up on.

BlackBerry Pearl 3G gets FCC clearance again, this time with T-Mobile 3G

Last time we went down this road, the Pearl 3G was earning its approvals on WCDMA 850 / 1900, meaning AT&T, Rogers, Bell, and Telus were all theoretically ready to roll. This time, it's the AWS version getting clearance -- in both 20- and 14-key flavors, no less -- giving T-Mobile USA along with Canada's WIND and Mobilicity everything they'd need to launch RIM's most consumer-friendly model. We still don't have confirmation either from T-Mobile or AT&T as to what their plans are for this thing, but at least we know we've got some legal hardware ready at this point.

  • Nokia’s New York flagship store closes today

Nokia’s New York flagship store closes today

Imagine our luck: we just happened to stroll into Nokia's New York flagship store today on 57th between 5th and Madison Avenue, only to discover that it was practically torn down and set to close permanently today, a move that Nokia announced late last year. A representative approached us as soon as we entered and said, "the only phones we have are from this point forward; there's nothing else in the store." Interestingly, a call over to Nokia's other North American flagship in Chicago confirmed that it isn't closing today and no date has been set (at least, not a date that anyone is talking about) -- so there's one more outpost in the States if you want to get your Nokia on one last time. Needless to say, the overwhelming majority of Americans won't be shedding any tears over the closure, but it's always disappointing to see a neat and beautifully-designed place to geek out go belly-up. And where are we going to play with an N8 before we buy now, anyway?

Late Mate for BlackBerry screws with your clock to make you more punctual

I run late. Always. The last time I remember being not-late, it’s because I thought the event started 30 minutes earlier than it actually did. I ended up only being 15 minutes early. If you’re a late person (or if you’ve seen that one episode of I love Lucy), you’ve probably heard of the trick where [...]

Android’s daily shipment rate jumps up to 65,000 per day

Back in February of this year, Eric Schmidt used his keynote at Mobile World Congress to disclose an interesting tidbit: between Google and their hardware partners, they were then shipping a collective total of around 60,000 units per day. Not too bad, right? Its gotten even better. In a shareholders meeting yesterday, Eric took the time to [...]

  • Apple is now Nintendo’s biggest problem

Apple is now Nintendo’s biggest problem

The last time Nintendo took a big hit in profit, it resulted in the development of perhaps the most successful video game console of all time in the Wii. What's Nintendo's response going to be this time around? Yes, the big N has seen its profits drop from $3.03 billion to $2.48 billion—still a fair a bit of money perhaps to you and me, but cause for panic in the house that Mario built. While a traditional rival, Sony (with the PlayStation), was responsible for the previous rough patch, this time it's Apple. Will Nintendo allow the iPhone to push it around?

  • iPhone OS 4 unlocks 720p video capture, further solidifying iPhone HD?

iPhone OS 4 unlocks 720p video capture, further solidifying iPhone HD?

Last time on let's-speculate-about-Apple-products, the New iPhone rumor mill dug up dirt on video chat and a 5 megapixel camera. Now, it appears there might be one more reason to call it the iPhone HD. MacRumors reports that the iPhone SDK 4 beta includes the value "AVCaptureSessionPreset1280x720," leading some to believe Cupertino's next phone will record video in 720p. Mind you, the iPhone 3GS was technically already capable of that feat, so this might not have anything to do with a new handset, but honestly, at this point the iPhone's camera wouldn't be competitive recording in a smaller format anyhow.

Nokia-Microsoft partnership bears first fruit: Communicator Mobile comes to E52 and E72

Last time we used "Nokia" and "Communicator" in the same sentence, we were talking about a giant QWERTY clamshell with roots dating back to the mid '90s -- but yeah, that's most definitely not what looking at here. Instead, we're seeing the first results of Nokia's newfound friendship with Microsoft, a build of Communicator Mobile that's all set up to run on the S60-based E52 and E72. Granted, an enterprise instant messaging utility isn't something we can all use, but that's just as well since it's limited to just two devices in Nokia's range at the moment; eventually, it'll be preinstalled on "select" devices and be available to a broader selection of phones already in the lineup. This is awesome, guys -- now let's get cracking on Office, shall we?

  • Review: Energizer Recharge Smart Charger

    Review: Energizer Recharge Smart Charger

The last time I paid attention to rechargeable batteries was probably back in the early 1990s. We had this huge recharging tech that allowed you to recharge all sorts of batteries - none of which we owned - so we were limited to recharging the D cells we had and used in, as I recall, some kind of remote controlled boat. Anyway, Energizer has brought the battery charger into the 21st century by adding an LCD display that shows current charge level and, get this, hours left until a full charge. There's not much to say here. You can charge AA and AAA batteries - not at the same time - and the $19.99 kit includes four AA batteries, which is nice.
