mTouch: An affordable multi-touch web table

It's hard out here at Disrupt for gadget geeks, but we just got lucky. Merel Technologies is showing off a very cool multi-touch web table that uses gesture recognition, object recognition, and multi-user multi-touch to create a new way to interact with media and kiosk apps. The best thing? It costs $3,200 for the 32-inch model and $4,200 for the 42-incher and they're available now. The table is made by Merel Technologies in New York and it uses a stacked multi-touch layer along with an LCD TV to display the interface. A built-in PC runs the whole thing and you can tear it down to create a coffee-table sized device. You can also customize colors. Click through for our hands-on video.

Create your own view of the world with the WindowWall

I love the show Leverage. Partly because it's filmed in my home town of Portland Oregon, and partly because of the high tech gadgets that they use. For example, the briefing sequences use a wall of LCD TVs. The each TV can show an individual shot, or can be combined into one massive display, which just looks like fun to me. Well, you can buy your own, better version, with the WindowWall.

New chip to boost image quality of cheap TVs

In case you can afford an LCD TV but not one of the good ones (I, for example, still have my Sony CRT-TV from 2004), Mitsumi Electric's new solution might be of interest to you. The company, which is known for manufacturing controllers for video game consoles, is developing an IC chip that can boost the sharpness of images LCD TVs produce.

  • If you’re going to buy an HDTV, why do you still keep using standard-definition sources?

If you’re going to buy an HDTV, why do you still keep using standard-definition sources?

This is definitely a case of preaching to the choir, but perhaps you have friends and/or family members in need of support. A survey just came out in the UK that says that while 56 percent of households have an HDTV, 91 percent of them still use standard-definition sources. That is, even though Mum and Dad have shelled out £900 for a 40-inch 1080 LCD, said TV is still connected to standard-def Sky box or plain ol' DVD player. What gives? Why spend the money on a new TV if you're not going to use it?

Report: Sony and Sharp shake hands in another LCD TV deal

Globally speaking, there is one clear leader in the LCD TV business: Samsung. The company commands a 23.2% share in this segment, with Sony (13.7%) and Sharp (7%) almost hopelessly behind (according to DisplaySearch). So in June this year already, Sony and Sharp inked a joint venture deal to produce LCD TVs together. And today, the Nikkei (Japan's biggest business publication), reports that the two former arch rivals decided to further expand their alliance.

Shock: TV association complaining about possible new California green regulations

This California TV regulation thing isn't going to happen without a fight, no sir. Even though a bunch of LCD makers have said that they wouldn't have too much of a problem complying with whatever the California commission comes up with, the LCD TV Association has just applied the brakes, saying that any such regulation will ultimately result in “TVs that have fewer features.”

  • OLED TV shipments to increase 200% by 2015, but to remain a small niche market

OLED TV shipments to increase 200% by 2015, but to remain a small niche market

You would be hard pressed to find an OLED TV in any brick and mortar retailer besides the Sony Store right now. The technology is amazing, but they just aren't available yet and that might not change soon according to a iSuppli report. The TVs are too small and the prices are too high to gain any real traction. But, as we all know, that will change as the display tech evolves. However, don't expect to see a wall full of OLED because the LCD market isn't slowing down.

  • Help Key: Why 120Hz looks “weird”

Help Key: Why 120Hz looks “weird”

I've been testing an HD projector here at the house and, in its initial, out-of-the-box setting we found that the picture was ridiculously "sharp." The picture, I suppose, looked like an old Dr. Who episode where the action on screen is smoother than the background, creating a jarring disparity when watching movies with lots of movement. It's sometimes called the "Soap Opera Effect." We decided to do a little digging to figure out why. Most film is recorded at 24 frames per second, but your LCD TV probably either displays at 60 fps or 120 hz (hertz is just a measurement of frequency per second). There are three main ways to cope with this.
