Barnes & Noble launches its own e-book store, and you can read ‘em on your iPhone or PC

Well look at that, Barnes & Noble is getting into the e-book game. Right now, there's no stand-alone reader to go along with the company's just-launched e-book store, but it's not big deal; odds are you already have the reader. (A reader, created by Plastic Logic, is scheduled to go on sale early next year.) The store, which has “700,000 titles” on its servers, goes live alongside an iPhone (and iPod touch) and Mac/PC reader software. That is, as you fire up, I don't know, iPhoto or Notepad, you could be reading The Beckham Experiment.

“Bowlingual”: Portable dog language translator (video)

Japanese toymaker Takara Tomy claims it has developed a device that can translate what a dog "says" into human language and emoticons in real time. And the so-called "Bowlingual" [JP ] isn't being marketed as a (pure) gag product. Jointly developed with an acoustics research laboratory and a veterinarian, the Bowlingual works wirelessly (your dog must wear a wireless mic around the neck). Let the device catch noises made by your dog (transmission range: 10m) and it will analyze the "animal language" with a special algorithm before telling you on the LCD screen what was being "said".

Fujifilm’s 3D Digicam Almost Ready for Stores

If Fujifilm had any kind of marketing nous, it’d license the design of the classic red plastic Viewmaster 3D viewer and put its new camera’s gubbins inside. Why? Because the camera in question is a 3D shooting, dual-lens camera which, although somewhat cute in a robot-faced kind of way is also rather dull, especially in comparison [...]

IDT to swap solar cells into LCDs, but not for energy reasons

Solar-powered LCDs? Oh, yeah -- we've got those. Sadly, that's not at all what Integrated Digital Technologies is aiming to improve upon next week at Computex, though we still find its approach to trimming LCD weight and manufacturing costs an interesting one. If we're digesting this correctly, we're hearing that the outfit plans to create interactive displays (or iScreens) that have embedded solar cells in the TFT array rather than extra film or glass with photo sensors. The result? A cost savings of up to 30 percent in manufacturing, not to mention a rather significant decrease in weight. Without any images to go by, it's still a wee bit tough to really wrap our heads around this new take, but hopefully we'll see more next week in Taiwan.

Sharp adds cyan and yellow to its RGB displays, laughs scornfully at magenta
Sharp is taking some cues from the nearly dearly departed print publishing world for its next line of LCDs, adding two colors to the typical RGB gamut. Cyan and yellow, half of the CMYK spread that makes your Sunday Garfield sketch pop, are going to be added to the company's displays to make up what it's dubbing "Multi-Primary-Color Technology." The tech is said to be able to reproduce 99 percent of all colors able to be perceived by the human eye -- because apparently 1.7 billion colors from a traditional LCD wasn't enough. The displays will be on display at the Society for Information Display Symposium in San Antonio starting next week. So, lucky Texans, prepare to get your cone cells massaged.

Pixel Qi demonstrates 3qi display, merges e-ink with LCD

Pixel Qi demonstrates three-mode display set to merge e-ink with LCD
We knew Pixel Qi was up to something when it pledged to give us a cheap laptop that could last 40 hours on a charge. Now we can finally see what, with the OLPC spin-off releasing some images of a prototype screen called 3qi that looks like it can combine the best of e-ink and traditional LCD displays -- prototypes that will be shown in the flesh at Computex next week. The screen can work as a traditional backlit LCD when indoors, can have that backlight disabled to be perfectly visible outdoors (shown after the break), and, as its pièce de résistance, can be toggled into an energy-efficient "epaper" mode. How exactly the company is fitting these seemingly disparate slices of technology into a single 10.1-inch screen is something of a mystery, but we're guessing much will be answered next week ahead of a planned product launch by the end of the year. Color us intrigued.

    Alienware debuts the allpowerful M17x

Wow, it seems that someone over at PCWorld.com couldn't keep their mouth shut and announced the Alienware M17x a bit early. No matter, the most important thing is that you see what this baby has under the hood. It's damn impressive and certainly allpowerful.

Alienware’s M17X gaming laptop with twin GTX 280M GPUs truly is all powerful

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/pc_games/Alienware_s_M17X_with_twin_GTX_280M_GPUs_is_all_powerful'; The announcement wasn't scheduled for a few more days -- four according to the teaser site -- but it looks like Alienware's All Powerful gaming laptop has been set free anyway. So, does it live up to the clues? Pretty much... how does a pair of 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M GPUs strike you? No Core i7 listed, instead we're looking at a Core 2 Extreme quad-core CPU at the top end with up to 8GB of 1333MHz DDR3 memory, and 1TB of 7200-rpm disk or a 512GB SSD if you prefer. RAID 1 or RAID 0? Sure. Rounding things out is a nine-cell battery of unstated performance, FireWire, 4x USB, eSATA, ExpressCard, 802.11n WiFi, 8-in-1 media card reader, dual-layer Blu-ray, a 1920 x 1200 pixel edge-to-edge LCD, DisplayPort and HDMI-outs all wrapped up in a massive chassis weighing 11.68-pounds with a 15.98 x 12.65 x 2.11-inch footprint. It's also packing a GeForce 9400M G1 GPU with HybridPower technology that allows you to scale the graphics back to conserve battery power. Prices start at $1,799 for a lot less than we mentioned above.

As a footnote to the details above, PCWorld also says that Alienware will use next week's E3 show to update us on its 42.8-inch curved monitor we went hands-on with back in January of 2008.

    [Thanks, Steve]

HP Mini 110 netbook gets examined on video

We've already gotten a decent look at HP's new Mini 110 courtesy of the usual carefully chosen press shots, but the folks at Tech65.org recently had a chance to get up close with the netbook, and they've now thankfully provided a thorough hands-on video for folks considering it or those simply curious. While there's not exactly a whole lot of surprises, we do get a good look at the new, slightly recessed "anti-glare" display, along with the revised trackpad, the new LCD-intergrated speakers, and the rearranged port and card slots. Head on past the break to check it out for yourself.

MSI introduces GT729 and EX723 gaming / multimedia laptops

Every few weeks or so it feels like we're being formally introduced to yet another MSI laptop, and today we've the pleasure of greeting a pair. Up first is the gaming-centric GT729 (shown left), which rolls in with 3GB of RAM, a Core 2 Duo processor, WiFi, 17-inch LCD, ATI's 1GB Mobility Radeon HD 4850 GPU, a 4.1 audio system (yes, it has a "subwoofer"), 2 megapixel webcam, optional Bluetooth, HDMI / VGA outputs, three USB 2.0 sockets, a 4-in-1 card reader, audio in / out, an ExpressCard slot, up to 500GB of HDD space, a Blu-ray drive and your choice between a 6- or 9-cell battery (take the latter, just sayin'). The 17-inch EX723 (shown right) doesn't differ much, though it does tone things down a bit with a GeForce G110M graphics set and a hard drive maximum of 320GB. Per usual, MSI's steering clear of detailing things such as price and release, so hold tight if you've found yourself drawn.

  • Sony Cyber-shot W180 and W190 cameras feature awesome digital zooms

Sony Cyber-shot W180 and W190 cameras feature awesome digital zooms

Sony just announced a pair of Cyber-shot cameras in Europe. Both offer Sony's smile shutter technology, 3x zoom stabilized with SteadyShot, 2.7-inch LCD, a claimed ISO 3200 sensitivity, and 7 automatic scene selection modes. The W180, though, has a 10.1 megapixel sensor to the 12.1 megapixels of the W190 (pictured). Oddly, Sony's pushing the 17x/18x digital zoom capabilities on these -- something we haven't seen hyped for a few years:
Pristine picture quality is further enhanced by the high-quality 3x optical zoom lens. Smart zoom boosts maximum magnification to a frame-filling 18x for W190 and 17x for W180 for even more dramatic close-ups.
In other words, these cams are targeting entry-level consumers prone to enjoying a Big Mac and tattle-rag while shopping instead of doing any real pre-purchase research. Available starting July in silver, black, and red for "an outstanding value." Backside front, after the break.

Some flexible AMOLED news for you. (I know, right?) Samsung just showed off a prototype 6.5-inch display that's less of a hassle to produce in large quantities. (Temperature doesn't need to be as closely monitored, manufacturing costs have dropped, etc.) Samsung envisages something like this being used in electronic book readers, electronic passports, etc. Paper be damned, I guess.
