HTC HD2 officially coming to US, out in Europe and Asia today!
Posted on November 4, 2009 | No CommentsBe still, our beating hearts! HTC has just pressed the "Go" button for European and Asian shipping of its latest object of desire, and it's served notice to American phone lovers that the HD2 is coming to them soon as well. Slated for a "major US carrier" some time "early 2010," it'll land squarely in the same time bracket as the XPERIA X10, which should lead to some really quite interesting decisions to be made, presumably by March 2010. The WinMo 6.5 device might be shipping now, but you'll have to wait at least until the 9th of November before you can spill your Euros for it, and we expect to see a flurry of pricing and contract information filling that short waiting time. Full PR after the break.

MMS for iPhone 2G and tethering on OS 3.1.2 explained, not for the faint of heart
Posted on October 19, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, Apple, iPhone OS
Let's be clear upfront that this isn't for the casual iPhone jailbreaker, but if you feeling like living on the edge, you can give your original model an added boost of MMS capability, or any device with OS 3.1.2 the power to tether. Highlighted in a series of tweets today by iPhone dev team lead MuscleNerd, whiterat (for MMS) and two-bit (for tethering) will get the job done, but both require tinkering with the baseband, which is exponentially more advanced and brick-inducing than, say, installing Cydia. Venture forth with the instructions beyond the read links below.

Verizon beats everyone at the HTC Touch Pro 2 game
Posted on September 10, 2009 | No CommentsSlow and steady wins the race, right? Verizon’s certainly not the first off the gate with the Touch Pro 2, but they definitely just took the lead in our books. Both Sprint and T-Mobile are charging a dang-near-absurd $350 bucks for theirs, with the latter adding insult to injury by not even including a 3.5mm [...] -
Mobile browser maker Skyfire adds another $5 million to its war chest

SkyFire is getting ready to roll with its rich mobile browser. Last May, the company (finally) released its Symbian program after a long beta trial and announced that a BlackBerry version was in the works.
Earlier this Summer they hired former Travelocity executive Jeffrey Glueck to lead the company into the next phase. Now a regulatory filing reveals the startup has raised a Series Cclosed off its earlier Series B round of funding with an extra $5 million, reports peHUB. -
Sony Ericsson gets new head and Sir Stringer comes in to shake things up
Posted on August 17, 2009 | No Comments
Sure Sony can't solve its own problems but SE has brought in a new head, Bert Nordberg, and is officially placing Sir CEO Hoard Stringer as the head of the board. The resulting shake-up had better give SE a huge boost or else they're going down.
Nordberg replaces Carl-Henric Svanberg.

T-Mobile to push out four Android updates this year, maybe every year

Do women need special cell phones? Deutsche Telekom says yes
Posted on June 23, 2009 | No Comments
Do cell phone producers really need to think of female customers as a specific market segment? So far, most of them think if they make the devices pink, cute or small enough, women will just take the bait. But quite unsurprisingly, a German design researcher from Deutsche Telekom says this isn't enough [GER].

Flint, MI will hopefully soon get its own biogas facility
Posted on June 16, 2009 | No CommentsThere isn't a spot in the country that has been harder hit by the financial meltdown than Flint, MI. Forbes recently labeled Flint as the city that has the longest road to recovery too. It's bad in the birthplace of General Motors and the financial climate is bad there right now - really bad. I know this first hand. That's where I live. But the city might soon lead the nation with the country's first biogas plant. This plant will be built with the help of Swedish Biogas International and eventually help fuel the city's municipal vehicle fleet, which in turn should save the city millions of dollars. That is, if the plant ever gets built. -
So long, HSPA+: AT&T “likely” moving straight from 7.2Mbps to LTE
Posted on May 27, 2009 | No Comments
At Mobile World Congress, AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega had mentioned to us that AT&T was "better off" than Verizon thanks to 3GPP Release 7's capabilities to extend existing HSPA infrastructure through to 21Mbps and beyond by using the wonders of HSPA+ before the company would need to bite the bullet and get moving on LTE. We're not sure whether Big Red's aggressive LTE plans have AT&T rethinking its strategy or if it just wants to save time, money, and energy by avoiding yet another interim rollout, but we're now being told by a company spokesman that "it's likely that timelines for LTE standards will lead us directly from 7.2 to LTE." He mentions that HSPA+ is "still an option," but at any rate, this is a markedly different tone than we've heard in the past -- even as late as last month -- and if this means we're getting LTE even a single day sooner, we're all for it.Filed under: Wireless
