Panasonic’s new face recognition technology works in almost all lighting
Posted on September 21, 2009 | No Comments
Panasonic has developed a new face recognition system that's pretty impressive. Their technology not only makes it possible to detect (and clearly display) faces in dark or overly bright settings but also if the person in question is behind glass and the face is covered with reflections.

Sony outs the beautiful LED-backlit ZX5 LCD TV
Posted on September 7, 2009 | No CommentsThese new 46- and 52-inch Sony sets are loaded: 240Hz, edge-mounted LED backlighting, wireless media receiver, and they are deliciously thin. Right now they are only announced in Japan, but I’ll bet good money that Sony will announce and price the US-spec’d models this week at CEDIA. But until then, spend 30 seconds of your [...] -
Wait, the cell phone accessory market is worth how much?
Posted on August 26, 2009 | No Comments$63 BILLION. That’s how much we’re spending each year to keep our devices primped and powered. In the U.S. alone, the average mobile phone owner spends roughly $60 on accessories over the life of their phone. I mean, we all go through chargers fairly regularly, but $63 BILLION-worth? According to ABI Research (which conducted the, well, [...] -
Facebook App Developer To Apple: Tear Down This App Store Wall
Posted on August 25, 2009 | No Comments
Apple has been working overtime recently to right some of the App Store wrongs, led by none other than Senior VP Phil Schiller. And having exposed some App Store approval process secrets in its letter to the FCC, everything should be all hunky dory in the App Store now, right? Wrong.
It's hard to remember an app in recent memory that has been anticipated more than Facebook's new 3.0 version of its iPhone app. How do I know? You should see my Facebook inbox from people who have hunted me down knowing that I have it since I reviewed it. Unfortunately, I can't give it to anyone because it's a version tied specifically to my iPhone (so stop emailing!). It's been a week and a half since Facebook engineer Joe Hewitt submitted the app to the App Store, and the wait time frustration is not only getting to the users, but to Hewitt himself, as he made clear in a blog post tonight.
Simply put, Hewitt's post is a must-read because he makes a range of excellent points in a fairly condensed space. We'll simply highlight some of the larger ones.

Posted on August 20, 2009 | No CommentsWord on the street is that students plan to protest outside of the Nokia store in Manhattan because of the company's alleged evildoing in Iran. The protest is being led by Project Nur, which is a student-affiliated “initiative” of the American Islamic Congress. Good luck, bro.

The Solar-UFO is a UFO-shaped vessel that serves as a water purifier
Posted on August 20, 2009 | No CommentsA Japanese company called NTT Facilities, a subsidiary of telecommunications behemoth NTT, obviously has enough time for something cool like this: The so-called Solar-UFO [JP], a UFO-shaped vessel that serves as a water purifier and is powered by solar energy.

Les Paul, father of the solid-body electric guitar, dead at 94
Posted on August 13, 2009 | No CommentsStrum out a few chords of Stairway, friends, because the guy who pioneered the solid-body electric guitar, Les Paul, is dead. He died of complications from pneumonia in White Plains, NY. Paul also invented multitrack recording, the process of playing and recording multiple tracks at once. This led to incredible - and decidedly mechanical - [...] -
Boxee Watches $6 Million More In Funding Stream In
Posted on August 12, 2009 | No Comments
Boxee, the media center software startup, has won a lot of fans with its open approach to streaming content. And as a result it has won some more money, to the tune of a $6 million second round, led by Boston's General Catalyst Partners. The new money will be used for growth: Both expanding the team and expanding the service's reach in the market, we're told.
But why now? After all, Boxee raised its first round of funding just 8 months ago, a $4 million round with Union Square Ventures and Spark Capital investing. "We've seen a lot of momentum over the past couple of months. It seemed like it made sense to go ahead [with a new round]," Boxee's new head of marketing Andrew Kippen tells us.

Viliv X70 preorders delayed, should ship out on August 11
Posted on July 28, 2009 | No Comments
I feel real sorry for the folks that pre-ordered the fantastic Viliv X70 from Dynamism. Those customers should have gotten an email today explaining that the UMPC has been delayed by about two weeks. It seems that it goes back to the old saying of how things roll down hill as a delay from component suppliers has been passed on to the consumers. Dynamism now expects the first shipment to go out on August 11 instead of right now. But let me just say, that the UMPC is amazing and is worth the little bit extra wait.

Posted on July 27, 2009 | No CommentsA British DJ (well, ex-DJ), Steve Miller, claims to be allergic to Wi-Fi. As such, he's had to spend recent days hiding away in his house, away from any and all Wi-Fi signals. Supposedly he's one of the 2 percent of people who suffer from electromagnetic sensitivity.
