New battery material could boost efficiency of electric cars by a factor of ten
Posted on August 17, 2009 | No Comments
Electric cars have one major problem: Especially in the case of long drives, owners have to make too many stops to charge the battery. Now a group of researchers from Toyota and Tohuku University (in Northern Japan) announced progress on their work to do away with this inconvenience.
They were able to make single crystals of lithium cobalt oxide, a chemical compound used in the production of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles (the picture shows a li-ion battery for hybrid vehicles Hitachi unveiled back in April).

More scientific black magic promises to double Li-ion battery capacity
Posted on May 30, 2009 | No CommentsGo on and file this one away in the folder of "awesome things that could, but won't ever happen." As the brilliant minds around the world figure out how to solve vicious diseases, move motorcars with peanut oil and send engineers to fix a telescope in outer space, we still can't buy a pack of AA cells that last longer than a month or two in our favorite toy. Some call it a limit of physics, some deem it a conspiracy. Whatever the case, we've no doubt whatsoever that a new silicon-containing carbon material -- designed by Dow Corning Toray to double the capacity of existing Li-ion batteries -- won't ever have a real impact in our lives. Of course, it's not like any consumer would actually benefit from having a netbook battery good for 16 hours, nor would wedding photographers enjoy being able to shoot 1,000 indoor shots without cracking the battery door open on their SB-600. No -- that's just absurd. C'mon Dow, prove us wrong here.Filed under: Misc. Gadgets, Science

So my “hands-on” post was really more of a “quick look” or a “look at some sample images” post than a hands-on you've grown accustomed to from CG, so I thought it wise to have a real hands-on of the Pentax K-7. I'm a Pentax user and I let the fanboy in me get the best of me. Apologies. Now here's the real hands-on, but before we jump into that, here is the full spec sheet of the K-7 that was used over the weekend at the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix.
