Guinness World Record: Sanyo battery lets e-car travel 555.6 km without recharging

One of the biggest obstacles that prevents electric cars and other vehicles from becoming mainstream is the insufficient battery life. In most cases, potential buyers of those green vehicles are scared off by the fact that there still aren't enough charging stations out there or that the travel distance (on a single charge) is just too short. But many companies are working on the battery problem, and one of them apparently is Sanyo. Today the company issued a press release in which it claims one of its lithium-ion battery "systems" helped an electric vehicle to drive exactly 555.6km (345 miles) from Tokyo to Osaka - on a single charge. The car in question is a special version of the Daihatsu Mira (whose non-electric original is widely considered to be "green", too).

New Hitachi tech to double lithium-ion battery life

Lithium-ion batteries are everywhere, powering small gadgets, cars or even buildings. It's not a surprise to see a number of companies currently working on improvements. Just a few weeks ago, we reported about Japan-based Eamex, which claimed their prototype battery can be charged and discharged over 10,000 times and can be used for about 20 years. And now Hitachi is claiming a new material they developed could double the life span of lithium ion batteries. The company has partnered up with Shin-Kobe Electric Machinery, saying batteries based on the material could be used in smart grid applications (Hitachi says that segment alone will be worth $32 billion by 2020).

The Chevy Volt 200 degrees test

This test is no doubt neat. I mean, automakers test the exterior to make sure every piece can withstand extreme temperatures and they should. But how about the test where the Volt’s battery is heated up to 200 degrees. Where is that video? I’ve sat in a few cars after they baked in the sun [...]

eneloop music booster: Sanyo’s battery charger for music devices

Even though it's now a Panasonic subsidiary, Sanyo lives on as its own brand. And one of the major reasons Panasonic bought the company is its "green" image, mainly achieved through selling products under the "eneloop" sub-brand. The latest of these products, the so-called eneloop music booster, was announced today. It's a rechargeable DC 9V battery unit specifically designed for music devices.

Toshiba Dynario fuel-cell: the battery revolution begins October 29th

    Filed under:

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/Dynario_fuel_cell_the_battery_revolution_has_begun'; We can hardly believe it but the day has finally arrived: Toshiba just launched the first Dynario fuel-cell for portable consumer electronics. That's right, the long promised and highly anticipated direct methane fuel-cell (DMFC) with dedicated fuel cartridge for on-the-go refueling will go on sale October 29th in Japan for ¥29,800 (about $328) plus another ¥3,150 (about $34) for a set of five, 50ml fuel cartridges. Dynario takes about 20 seconds to fill its 14ml fuel tank with an injection of a concentrated methanol solution at which point it's ready to charge USB-connected devices. Dynario's hybrid structure uses a lithium-ion battery to store enough electricity to charge two typical cellphones, according to Tosh. The first run consists of only 3,000 units after which Toshiba will gauge consumer reaction before extending the launch outside of Japan. Boy oh boy, a new age in portability has begun.

Toshiba Dynario fuel-cell: the battery revolution begins October 29th originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Thu, 22 Oct 2009 01:55:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.
