AIR for Android app turns Nexus One into slot car controller (video)

AIR for Android, a Phidgets motor control, a slot car set, and a custom built LEGO housing for good measure -- if this project isn't meant for Engadget, we don't know what is! The premise is pretty straightforward: Grant Skinner uses his Nexus One to send accelerometer data to a desktop PC, which then sends it to a motor controller. In turn, the controller tells the cars how fast to go. Tilt forward a little bit, and the car accelerates a little bit. Lean forward a lot, and it picks up speed. Sure beats those cheesy plastic triggers we used as kids! For the interface (which is an SWF that's sent to the handset from the host PC) our man designed a gas pedal with a series of lights that tells you how fast you're going. Let's just say we wouldn't mind a setup like this for the Engadget game room. Video after the break.

    Engadget Mobile Podcast 043 – 06.18.2010

We've got a little bit of a delay in producing the podcast this week, but that doesn't mean you need to be podcastless -- far from it, in fact. What we're doing is providing you with a replay of the live audio from yesterday's show in the meantime. Yes, true, that means iTunes and RSS feeds won't work quite yet, but think of it this way: you can simulate the live show experience. Rock 'n roll! Follow the break for the meat.

Ball Engineer Hydrocarbon Spacemaster Orbital Watch: Some Watch!

ABlogtoRead posted a little bit on the Ball Engineer Hydrocarbon Spacemaster, a mouthful of a watch with some of the most striking styling I've seen in a while. I got to see this piece back at JCK and was extremely impressed. Ball is famous for their gas tube lume and they cover their watches with the stuff. The expected life of the lume is about 25 years, at which point you can have a watchmaker replace it.

Hands-on with the AT&T HTC Aria

June 20th. That’s when AT&T gets the HTC Aria — a phone which, at least in my mind, is AT&T’s first to be powered by Android. What’s that you say? The Motorola Backflip was the first Android phone on AT&T? Sorry, I guess my mind has a tendency to block out tragic events. With past sins [...]

  • AT&T offering price protection (or iPhone 4 swap) to recent 3GS buyers

AT&T offering price protection (or iPhone 4 swap) to recent 3GS buyers

We've been able to confirm some leaked information out of modmyi.com today that AT&T is doing us a solid by extending price protection for recent iPhone 3GS buyers by just a little bit. If you purchased a 3GS -- either the 16GB or 32GB model -- between May 7 and May 14, you'll have until June 14 to get credited the difference between the price you paid and the $149 / $199 they're charging now; if you bought it after the 14th of May, you'd have at least until the 14th of this month anyway, so it's effectively a one-week extension. If you'd rather trade up to an iPhone 4 rather than pocketing some cash and keeping the 3GS, you've got an option there, too: anyone who picked up a 3GS between May 7 and May 21 can preorder an iPhone 4 by June 21 and get the new phone for only the difference in cost, assuming you bring in your 3GS when you pick it up.

On a related note, modmyi.com is also reporting that AT&T corporate stores are set to open at 7AM on the 24th, iPhone 4 launch day, though we're not able to confirm this one. Word on the street is that new customers will only be able to activate one line and existing customers will be able to buy one iPhone 4 per line of service, clearly an attempt to stretch inventory as far as it'll go. With the way Apple's setting up for preorders and launch-day delivery, it seems like a lot of this chaos and bedlam is going to be avoided -- but hey, it's Apple. You never know.

  • Garmin-Asus planning another nuvifone for AT&T?

Garmin-Asus planning another nuvifone for AT&T?

It takes a little bit of creative dot-connecting to follow our thought process here -- but we think we're onto something, so do us a favor and lend us an ear for a second. Garmin-Asus, of course, kicked off its North American efforts with the forgettable nuvifone G60 on AT&T, then just followed it up with the Garminfone on T-Mobile. We'd speculated previously that AT&T might have some sort of US exclusive on the use of the "nuvifone" name, considering that the company strays from that branding in no other market in the world. Additionally, all of ASUS' phones are happening through the Garmin-Asus joint venture right now, so when we found this E600 "PDA Phone" in the FCC this week, we knew right away that we were likely looking at a new nuvifone model. Looking at the filings, we see that it's rocking 850 / 1900MHz 3G, which leads us to believe that AT&T might be ready for round two -- either that, or one of our GSM friends north of the border is looking to deploy it -- but any way you slice it, that G60 is looking pretty long in the tooth.

HTC EVO 4G meets magnetic macro lens, shoots gorgeous closeups

As phone accessories go, protruding lens attachments are rarely top of our wishlist, but this one here might just alter our perspective a little bit. Good and EVO have gone to the trouble of obtaining a magnetically mountable macro lens to test out how well the EVO 4G's camera performs with a little more optical prowess. The answer is that in spite of the inevitably goofy appearance, the jumbo Android handset delivered some highly impressive imagery, getting really up close and personal with its subjects and picking out exquisitely tiny details. The results are certainly of a caliber unobtainable with the default optics and well worth checking out -- the source link is where that party's at.

  • BlackBerry Bold 9650 sales kicking off on Verizon this week?

BlackBerry Bold 9650 sales kicking off on Verizon this week?

We can't vouch for the authenticity here, but a shot over Berry Reporter alleges that Big Red will finally start taking orders for the Bold 9650 via direct fulfillment this week -- on June 3, to be exact. Considering Verizon's time-honored tradition of being all over RIM's latest CDMA releases on the double (probably because their development is funded largely by Verizon's orders), we're actually kind of surprised it's not on shelves already; it's possible that Sprint negotiated a short, sweet exclusivity period for itself just to get a little bit of a head start, we suppose. Anyhow, if you don't want to mail-order this thing, the shot goes on to say that you'll be able to check it out and buy it in stores on the 10th of the month, so hold tight.

    [Thanks, Christopher K.]

  • Netflix for iPad hacked and running on iPhone (update: disabled)

Netflix for iPad hacked and running on iPhone (update: disabled)

How desperate are you to get Netflix running on your iPhone? Desperate enough to jailbreak, grab frameworks from your iPad, and do some plist hacking? If the answer to those questions is "yes," then the folks at ModMyi have something they'd like to show you. According to the site, a tipster has been able to get the video streaming service up and playing on an iPhone by making what appears to be fairly simple changes to his device; namely, boosting the iPad's MediaPlayer.framework and altering plist settings once the app was installed on his phone. It's not all wine and roses, as using Netflix where it's not supposed to be used causes a massive battery drain (go figure), and there are issues with crashing and 3G playback (two more unsurprising problems). Still, it can be done, and this is just the start -- so if you want to get in on the party (and maybe even help out a little bit), hit the read link and see what it's all about.

Update: Cody tells us the powers that be have already disabled this little gem of a workaround. We have to hand it to you, powers that be -- that was mighty quick for a Memorial Day weekend.

    [Thanks, Cody]

Microsoft: So what that Apple is the ‘biggest’ tech company? We’re still rich!

Oh, Microsoft. Don't worry: people still love you. Also, people still hate you, so it all works out in the end. CEO Steve Ballmer told the Wall Street Journal something along the lines of, "So what Apple is now the "biggest" tech company in the land. Big deal. We still make incredible amounts of money. In fact, I'm going to go swim in my giant pool of money right now. Talk later." An exact quote? No, but it certainly captures the spirit that Ballmer was trying to convey: let Apple have its moment in the Sun, but we're not doing too bad for ourselves over here, you know?

Will the fancy-pants Jabulani perform at altitude at the World Cup?

Football (soccer) writers are typically terribly serious about what they do. Relax, buddy, it's just a game. A fun game, yeah, but just a game. The Guardian's Barry Glendenning does things a little bit differently: he's actually good! In a column today, Glendenning prepares us all for the inevitable complaints that will surround the Jabulani's performance at the World Cup. It's a time-honored tradition, complaining about the new ball: the ball is too heavy, the ball is too light, the ball swerves too much, the ball swerves too little, etc. Most accurate ball ever created? Obviously you haven't seen a Michael Carrick pass.

New MacBook specs leak out of Vietnam

Radio Shack taking EVO 4G preorders for $50 deposit, will toss in $20 for accessories

Between Sprint and Best Buy locations, there shouldn't be any shortage of opportunities to score an EVO 4G next month -- assuming inventory holds up, of course -- but Radio Shack's getting in the game, too, and it's sweetening the deal just a little bit. If you reserve a phone prior to launch by purchasing a $50 gift card (which you'll presumably use in June to help pay for the purchase), they'll toss in a $20 credit toward accessories when you come back in. Of course, these days, that doesn't even get you all the way to affording a freaking wall charger, but it's better than a punch in the nose.
