Use your laptop to detect the next big earthquake before it happens
Posted on April 20, 2010 | No CommentsIt's pretty great that people are just now realizing that Planet Earth isn't some sort of static strip mall. There are volcanoes, and earthquakes, and hurricanes, and tornadoes, and tsunamis—objects from outer space regularly invade the atmosphere. This planet is alive, brother! So, idea: you know how certain laptop models, like ThinkPads and MacBooks, come with built-in accelerometers? They're there in order to protect the hard drive from a devastating fall, but what it you could use said accelerometer to detect an earthquake before it happens?

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 fixes a-comin’ this week
Posted on April 19, 2010 | No CommentsBe on the lookout for a Battlefield: Bad Company 2 update sometime this week, probably by Wednesday. Most of the changes affect the multi-portion of the game, something that I’ve participated in for, oh, 18 seconds before dying, cursing, then never playing again. True story! -
Jailbreak fix for iTunes 9.1 on Windows already on the way
Posted on March 30, 2010 | No Comments
There was a wee bit of chaos amongst iPhone jailbreakers after this morning's iTunes 9.1 update hit. Seemingly out of nowhere, "tethered" jailbreaks (the slightly-less-convenient type necessary for newer iPhones) stopped working. Panic!
Fortunately, the endlessly resourceful army behind the jailbreaking effort has already isolated the problem, and a fix is in the works.

Be on the lookout for TiVo news later today!
Posted on March 2, 2010 | No CommentsI don't want to alarm any of you, but today is TiVo Day! Yes, a little later on today TiVo will unveil something that's sure to please Matt Burns, if no one else. There have been plenty of rumors as to what the company has up its sleeves, but I'm sworn to secrecy. That, and it's been several months since they actually told me What's Up, and I simply do not remember what I was shown behind closed doors.

Movie screener season is here~!
Posted on December 16, 2009 | No CommentsThe Golden Globe nominees were announced yesterday, and I'm going to go with Paul O and Ron's (from Ron and Fez… seriously, I have XM on all day long) conclusion that this year has been a fairly weak one. There were a few good films (I enjoyed Inglourious Basterds, and I want to see Up in the Air and The Informant and A Serious Man) but does anything really seem like an Oscar lock? I think not. Thank God for leaked screeners!

And we’re back!
Posted on November 30, 2009 | No CommentsYou may have noticed things have been a bit quiet on the MobileCrunch front for the past few days. After a few months of nose-to-the-grindstone, the siren call of over-packed plates and family good times stemming from the Thanksgiving holiday was too much; we locked up shop for a few days, headed home, and had [...] -

Our bet is that the upcoming Motorola Droid will be the breakout winner from this batch of phones. But here's the complete list of officially announced Android phones, as well as stuff that's just rumored at this point. Bookmark this post, and keep a lookout for updates.
Here are the Android contenders:

Posted on October 7, 2009 | No CommentsGreat news, fellow Windows 7 Launch Party hosts. Your party pack should arrive soon. Be on the lookout for a UPS tracking email. Mine’s set to arrive this Friday. Now, all I need is some clever party games. And a few guests, too. Maybe I should watch the instructional videos again for some tips. -
Too big to fail: Using MMOs to study economics
Posted on October 6, 2009 | No CommentsWe all know that real world officials have used games like World of Warcraft to monitor the spread of infectious diseases, like trout flu. But what's new to my eyes, broken pieces of junk that they are (I wouldn't be able see Jupiter even if I were five feet away from it), is that researchers are using them to study economics. It's simultaneously a bad and good idea.

Help Wired Pimp Our Kegerator, Win Free Beer
Posted on July 14, 2009 | No CommentsWired.com is building a kegerator at our San Francisco office, and we need your help to pimp it out, Wired style. We’re going to pit our machine, which we affectionately call Beer Robot, against two store-bought models we have in house for review. While we think Beer Robot will give the others a run for their [...]
