Viliv is keeping the tablet love running with the X10 Tablet. The upcoming kit builds upon Viliv's previous successful tablets, the S5 and X70. The X10 is entering the world now ruled by the iPad. The tablet marker is a bit different than when the other two models launched, but it looks like the Viliv X10 is ready to play with the big dog.

  • BookLover app: an app for book lovers

BookLover app: an app for book lovers

BookLover is a $0.99 app for the iPhone for people who love books. It looks at first glance like an iPhone version of Delicious Library, which I've never used. You can organize books -- complete with book cover art and in some cases a synopsis -- on your virtual bookshelf. You can take notes on books you've read, or perhaps jot a note reminding you about who you loaned your copy to. You can post your notes directly to your FaceBook wall or email them to a friend. And BookLover can recommend other books for you to read.

  • T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network goes live in New York City

T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network goes live in New York City

Manhattan is in need of as much wireless love as the nation's carriers can give it -- and shy of WiMAX or LTE, the next best thing is some good, old-fashioned HSPA+ with theoretical speeds going all the way up to 21Mbps. T-Mobile was the first American carrier to aggressively pursue a national HSPA+ rollout (though AT&T has revisited its upgrade strategy more recently and decided to hit it on the way to LTE, too), and the goods have finally hit the New York City metro area. That means that Gothamites can now buy the webConnect Rocket USB stick that's been rolling out market by market over the past few months -- and while we can guarantee you that you won't see anything close to 21Mbps in practice, it's probably among the fastest wireless data solutions in town for the time being. Don't go running any web servers on it now, y'hear?

Friends, it happened. Those long-running ads featuring John Hodgman and Justin Long as PC and Mac, are over. They have been replaced by the “Why you’ll love a Mac” page featuring pictures of Macs and a number of roll-over peans to Mac’s greatness including “It’s designed to be a better computer” and “It runs Office [...]

British garbage collectors to get 1,500 BlackBerrys

First it was the rozzers, now British bin men are getting BlackBerrys as part of their job equipment pack. Biffa, a private garbage collection firm responsible for cleaning up 25 local authorities around the UK, has agreed a £1.7 million ($2.44 million) deal with Vodafone for the provision of some 1,500 BlackBerry handsets along with dongles and 3G data cards. This somewhat curious capital investment has been made in order to allow drivers to download maps, collect data from customers, liaise with head office, and even take photos where necessary. The RIM phones will also allow Biffa to track its trucks' locations -- an option that's sure to get plenty of use, considering how much Brits love to keep an eye on things.

A quick hands-on with the LG Ally

Phone Arena have landed themselves a not-yet-released LG Ally, and have documented their first encounter with the device for all you fine folk in Interwebland. I think it's safe to say that the stand-out feature of this phone is that it has a QWERTY keyboard, so if the keyboard is a dud, the phone would be significantly less compelling. Well, I'm happy to say that Phone Arena give it the thumbs up, calling it a "pleasant surprise" that's more comfortable than the DROID's keyboard.

  • Sprint and Virgin Mobile announces Beyond Talk $25 prepaid plan, new prepaid brand

Sprint and Virgin Mobile announces Beyond Talk $25 prepaid plan, new prepaid brand

Sprint Nextel, through its Virgin Mobile brand, has announced a pretty big shift in its business model by offering new prepaid plans that begin at a mind-blowing $25 a month. Starting on May 12, three new Beyond Talk plans will include unlimited messaging, email, data, and web, as well as 300 minutes ($25), 1,200 minutes ($40), or unlimited minutes ($60) of talk time. And that ain't all -- BlackBerry data service can be added for an additional $10. Of course, you'll be paying full price for your phone, but at least the selection is indeed better than the usual pre-paid fare, including the Blackberry Curve 8530 ($300) and LG Rumor Touch ($150). We don't know how the other carriers are going to respond, but this does prompt the question: would you put up with Sprint's handset selection for a plan this cheap? PR after the break.

Update: The Wall Street Journal has it that Sprint is also fixing to launch an entirely new prepaid brand, and while it declined to share a name for the new branch, it did confess that it "will let customers pay upfront for cell service by the minute rather than signing up for a month at a time." As you may expect, it'll be aimed at "middle-aged Americans who only use cellphones occasionally to make calls," and it'll join Boost Mobile, Assurance Wireless and Virgin Mobile in Sprint's rapidly expanding stable of prepaid sub-brands. Is it difficult to tell these guys love the prepaid and can't quite figure out how to make ends meet on the postpaid side? Nah...

Visa wants to turn your iPhone into a credit card

If you've been reading MobileCrunch since November of 2009: A) We love you. Thanks for sticking around. B) You might remember that we did a post on "5 iPhone accessories we're still waiting for" - one of which was an iPhone case that acted as a credit card, relying on the RFID tap-to-pay system already in place in many thousands of retailers. Visa -- whoever that is -- is totally stealing our awesome, completely original, no-one-else-has-had-it-ever idea. And we love them for it.

Of course someone flush mounted an iPad into kitchen cabinets

Love it or hate it, the iPad is a versatile device with tons of potential. Just look how nicely an iPad works as a kitchen infotainment device. Hopefully the chump saved the original cabinet panel so when either some happens to the iPad or the novilty wears off, the kitchen can be put back to normal. But personally I'm sold. Now if only the wife felt the same way... Click through for the video demo.
