Vertu to sell 4 golden cell phones in Japan (price: $215,000 each)
Posted on March 26, 2010 | No Comments
Nokia pulled out of Japan, one of the world's biggest mobile markets, as early as November 2008. But because this country is quite wealthy, the Finnish company decided to conquer Japan with their luxury brand Vertu [JP], starting operations in September 2009. Initially the plan was to market handsets priced between $16,000 and $50,000.
But today Vertu Japan announced a "golden" handset with a price tag of 20 million yen (it's made-in-Japan gold lacquerwork, to be more exact). That's $215,000, with the price including free domestic calls. Buyers will be able to choose between four equally priced models: Kinko (pictured above), Kikusui, Nanten and Daigo (pictured below). The different designs stand for the different seasons of the year.

Sony’s Swarovski crystal-studded photo frames
Posted on February 11, 2010 | No Comments
For some reason, Austrian luxury brand Swarovski loves cooperating with Japanese electronics makers. Now Sony has announced [JP] a total of six 7-inch digital photo frames for the Japanese market, two of which (the DPF-D75 (WZ) in white and the DPF-D75 (BQ) in black) were jointly designed with the Austrians.

Hello Kitty Music Player Premium
Posted on December 4, 2009 | No Comments
The Hello Kitty Music Player Crystal, made in cooperation with luxury brand Swarovski, I blogged about in October drew the attention of quite a few (mostly female) CrunchGear readers. One of the problems was the price: $150 for a fairly basic music player isn't cheap. But now Japan-based Mouse Computer, in cooperation with iriver Japan, is offering a similar device. And their so-called Hello Kitty Music Player Premium [JP] is less expensive.

Posted on October 26, 2009 | No Comments
Hello Kitty is 35 years old now, and she still continues to be the dream cartoon cat of millions of teenage girls. If you're one of these people and have a penchant for gadgets on top of that, this new and strictly limited music player might be the right thing for you. The so-called Hello Kitty Music Player Crystal [JP] is the result of a cooperation between iriver Japan, Hello Kitty company Sanrio and luxury brand Swarovski Crystal.

Nokia starts offering VERTU mobile phone services in Japan
Posted on September 7, 2009 | No Comments
Japan is a tough market to crack for many non-Japanese cell phone makers, and even the world's leading cell phone maker, Nokia, had to give up its Japan operations after having failed to gain a foothold in this country (in November last year). But they're trying again, this time with their luxury brand Vertu.

Awesome Terminator 4 T-600 USB skull
Posted on August 21, 2009 | No Comments
I don't know what it is about Japan loving USB gadgets so much, but they just keep coming and coming. Today Thanko competitor Solid Alliance has announced a USB memory stick [JP] that's designed like a T-600 Terminator skull from Terminator 4 - Salvation (they have a license).
