Attention: Plex for Mac now plays well with Snow Leopard
Posted on October 28, 2009 | No CommentsIt's been some time since I've written about Plex, the Mac-specific fork of XBMC that, well, is fantastic. It seems Snow Leopard somewhat borked the application, but the latest release is all fixed up. Have a peach.

Maybe, maybe not: New doubts on Blu-ray being part of the next iMac revision
Posted on October 15, 2009 | No CommentsI'm not about to knock myself out for noting the 800th iMac rumor of the past few weeks, so here's the deal: people “close” to Apple now aren't sure whether or not Blu-ray will wind up on the next iMac revision. Blu-ray may be on Mac Pros, and maybe then only as a build-to-order option, but that's enough “maybes” to bore a slug.

Review: mStand by Rain Design
Posted on October 5, 2009 | No CommentsHere at TechCrunch HQ, almost all of us have laptops, with some connecting their laptops to an external display. In my case, I use a 15" Unibody MacBook Pro connected to a 22" Gateway display. I have always gone by the theory that the more real estate space you have, the more productive you are. To keep both displays level, I've been trying out number laptop stands; anywhere from paper stacked on top of each other, to cardboard, but it seems like the best laptop stand for my Mac is the mStand from Rain Design. The mStand is designed for the MacBook and MacBook Pro, yet it works with all laptops. The mStand is made of a single solid piece of aluminum that matches MacBook Pro's silver anodized finish.

Posted on July 10, 2009 | No Comments
Well, the one big advantage HP had in the Windows Home Server game maybe about to disappear. Someone has found a relatively easy way to enable remote Time Machine backup to a WHS. It's probably only a matter of time before a rough GUI version appear followed up shortly later by a well-polished solution.

Hotz does it again, releases jailbreak app for iPhone 3GS
Posted on July 3, 2009 | No Comments
George Hotz, the 20-year old hacker who originally unlocked the iPhone, has released a jailbreaking application for the iPhone 3GS codenamed "purplera1n." It's currently Windows-only (Windows 7 not supported), and requires the latest iTunes installed, and an iPhone 3GS with the 3.0 firmware.
Hotz mentions in a blog post that the jailbreak for Mac is "coming soon." The iPhone Dev Team did release a unlock for 3.0 which did not work on the iPhone 3GS, but Hotz's version does (although it doesn't free you from your current carrier).

Psystar emerges from bankruptcy ready to sell a Core i7 Mac Pro clone
Posted on July 2, 2009 | No Comments
And you thought that Apple finally drove the front running clone maker off of a cliff. Nope. Psystar successfully navigated the bankruptcy courts and is back at its old game of annoying Apple. The ongoing lawsuit is still in play, but bankruptcy no doubt allowed the company to shed some debt and reorganize under Chapter 11 guidelines. Now the company is back and just released a new Core i7 clone.

WD announces the My Book Studio Edition II, Mac-ready and up to 4TB
Posted on June 9, 2009 | No Comments
Today, WD announced the My Book Studio Edition II in a 4TB variety. The RAID 0 configurable dual-drive storage system works with Apple’s Time Machine and has four interfaces: eSATA, FireWire 800/400 and USB 2.0. WD is touting the 4TB behemoth as an eco-friendly product because of the GreenPower drives.
For the record, I'm writing these words on a MacBook Pro; the third Mac I've owned in the past twelve months. As I do so, I'm listening to music on iTunes through my standard issue iPod headphones, so as not to disturb my neighbours. Less than a foot from where I'm sitting, my iPhone sits charging. I am - as marketers might have it put - "a Mac".
And yet - my God - I'm bored of reading about Apple and their 'long awaited' tablet.
