Remember that school that was spying on kids? Well now it’s creepier

The Lower Merion School District (motto: "We're Building the Future Police State"), caught using a remote monitoring service on school-supplied laptops while the kids were at home, had some pretty creepy rules on the books to ensure compliance. To wit we find, thanks to strydehax, these gems:
    * Possession of a monitored Macbook was required for classes * Possession of an unmonitored personal computer was forbidden and would be confiscated * Disabling the camera was impossible * Jailbreaking a school laptop in order to secure it or monitor it against intrusion was an offense which merited expulsion

  • What if…Apple only offered the 64GB/3G iPad and sold it for $499

What if…Apple only offered the 64GB/3G iPad and sold it for $499

Even though the iPad is still more than a month away from shipping, iSuppli conducted a preliminary itemized parts breakdown. The results aren't that surprising: Apple's making a boatload on these things. Suppli concluded that the $499 16GB/no 3G model only costs $229 to manufacturer with the $829 64GB/3G model costing only $117 more to make even though it carries a $329 premium. Nice, eh? These numbers can be broken down even further showing Apple's insane margins. The 3G module only costs $24.50, but Apple charges $129 more for the option. The NAND memory chips are really the only difference between all three options, but their real costs of $29 for 16GB, $59 for $32GB, and $119 for 64GB are nowhere near proportionate with the iPad's prices. All this data shows that Apple's abandoning its long-held K.I.S.S. strategy. So what if Apple got back on the keeping it simple bandwagon, only offered the high-end 64GB with 3G iPad and still sold it for $499? After all, the company would still be making at least $153 on each iPad sold. Would that turn around the iPad's outlook?

  • Report: Acer will launch an ultra-thin notebook this year

Report: Acer will launch an ultra-thin notebook this year

Let's not forget Acer's quest to overtake HP as the number 1 computer maker in the world. That's important to remember as the company is reportably getting into the ultra-thin notebook market this year along with making a Chrome OS netbook and ebook reader. 2010 will be Acer's year as the company lays outs its plans, which, surprisingly, doesn't include outing a iPad-ish tablet clone. The Acer Timeline series lead the industry into the CULV game last year, but even those thin laptops look huge next to a MacBook Air or Dell Adamo XPS. So that brings us to right now as a report just surfaced claiming that sometime this year Acer will launch a true ultra-thin notebook based on Intel's next-gen Capella ULV processors that bring conventional notebook performance to ultra-thins.

Twas the night before the Creation event, and all through the internet..

Fair warning, this is probably a fake - we all know that people love to prank the night before an Apple event. Some suspected pictures of the iPad have shown up on the net, but it looks fishy to me.

BookBook wraps your Macbook in old leather

Finding a case for your computer is easy. Finding one that unique and still protects your computer can be a whole different story. Sure, leather is nice. Neoprene protects really well, and there are assorted other products that will protect your Mac Book, but they all look the same. Here's your chance to use something that's custom and unique - the BookBook. Based on the concept of hiding in plain sight, the BookBook case resembles an antique leather bound book, age and distressed by years of contact.

Apple-Lisa-1983Is it ironic that this $10,000 computer only sold 10,000 units? Released on January 19, 1983, LISA (Local Integrated Software Architecture) was a gigantic flop, but paved the way for the success of the Apple Macintosh, which paved the way for the success of the MacBook, which paved the way for the success of the iPhone, which paved the way for the success of the Apple Tablet!

  • Nokia asks ITC to ban iPhone, iPod, and MacBook imports, files another lawsuit against Apple

Nokia asks ITC to ban iPhone, iPod, and MacBook imports, files another lawsuit against Apple

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/apple/Nokia_Wants_to_Ban_iPhone_iPod_and_MacBook_Imports'; Looks like Nokia is going all-out in its patent fight with Apple: in addition to the lawsuit it's filed over GSM standards and last week's International Trade Commission complaint, Espoo just filed a second complaint with the federal court, alleging that Apple's infringing several "implementation patents" that cover everything from camera sensors to touchscreens. That's three fronts in the same war, if you're counting -- the original regarding GSM patents, and these two latest over specific device technologies. The biggest bombshell so far is the ITC complaint, in which Nokia's asking the commission to ban imports of basically every Apple mobile product from the MacBook to the iPhone for infringing its device patents -- a strategy we've seen in other high-profile cases. Since the ITC has the ability to move quite quickly, we'd expect that case to be the primary battleground for the moment -- but remember that Apple has plenty of its own incredibly broad patents of its own to fight back with here, so don't expect a quick resolution. Looks like 2010 is going to be awfully good for these attorneys, don't you think?

    [Thanks, Matt]

Israeli airport security shoots a defenseless MacBook

Not sure why this suddenly came up and I’m not going to get into the politics of this, but Israeli security, in an apparent fit of pique, shot a young woman’s laptop at the airport. I went inside to check on my bag. I had left it unattended, where they instructed. It was still there so [...]

    Review: Nokia Booklet 3G

Short Version: When Nokia first announced their Netbook 3G, expectations were mixed. After all, Nokia defined the mobile phone space but they’ve hardly been good at expanding out of the handset market. My take? This is a bit too underpowered and a bit too generic to be a truly great Nokia product but, given the [...]

The HyperMac will charge your Mac notebook and iPhone off the grid

The HyperMac from Koyono aims to keep your notebook and iPhone charged when you don't have access to a power outlet. If they had swappable batteries, this wouldn't be an issue. Apple, however, decided that no one actually wants to change batteries on the go anymore; that's a last gen feature. That's fine. The HyperMac looks like it should get the job done.
