Posted on June 14, 2010 | No CommentsIt's now less than twenty-four hours until pre-orders for the iPhone 4 kick off, magic is in the air, and you're feeling good -- but where (and how) do you get your name in the system? There'd be nothing more tragic than waking up on the 24th only to discover that your phone isn't arriving on launch day, so let's get things squared away right now so you know what you need to do tomorrow morning.
Follow the break for everything you need to know!Continue reading How to: pre-order the iPhone 4 (update: third-party retailers best avoided)

LinkPush: Chrome-to-Phone for the rest of us (those not on Android 2.2)
Posted on June 9, 2010 | No Comments
One of the neat-o features introduced in Android 2.2 (or Froyo) is "Chrome-to-Phone", which gives the ability to take what you're viewing in the Google Chrome browser (on your PC/Mac), and push it straight to your Froyo phone.
I've not yet seen this in person, though, because I'm stuck on a pre-Froyo build of Android. Which sucks.
But today, that changes: I found someone that -- like me -- was longing for some Chrome-to-Phone action on their Android 2.1 phone. Unlike me, however, they did something about it.
And so I introduce to you LinkPush: the Chrome-to-Phone alternative for the rest of us.

Android 2.2 wastes no time getting hacked onto HTC Dream and Magic
Posted on May 28, 2010 | No CommentsThough we're not even a wee bit shocked to see a "usable" version of Froyo already available to owners of the G1 / Dream and Magic, we're definitely heartened to see that phones running 2008 specs can handily run a mid-2010 version of the platform. There's plenty of stuff that doesn't work yet -- WiFi and GPS, just to name a couple of biggies -- but we suspect that this is one dev community that won't give up until everything is working to their satisfaction. Motivation to hang on to otherwise outdated hardware for a few more months, perhaps?Android 2.2 wastes no time getting hacked onto HTC Dream and Magic originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 28 May 2010 00:50:00 EST. Sprint’s Hero finally gets official Android 2.1 upgrade
Posted on May 19, 2010 | No Comments
Assuming you resisted the temptation to either root your Hero or update it with the recently leaked 2.1 firmware, this is your very first chance to finally slap on a dash of Android future on your senescent device. Sprint has at long last made the update available, though it isn't quite yet ready to download from its site. Fear not, the good folks behind the yellow network have put together a guide on upgrading through your phone and we'll link up the download as soon as it's ready for consumption. Time to start enjoying that Google Maps Navigation magic and all the other goodies constituting Eclair's delectable filling.

Wi-Fi Sync for iPhone video hands-on: it works!
Posted on May 17, 2010 | No CommentsWe just got our hands on Wi-FI Sync and guess what? It actually works -- fancy that! For those of you out of the loop, Apple recently rejected this gem of an app (go figure), but thanks to the magic of jailbreaking, that was hardly the end of the road. Days later, Wi-Fi Sync ended up on Cydia (Mac-only, for now) with a completely-affordable price tag of $9.99, promising iPhone and iPod touch users the ability to sync their device with iTunes sans any cabling whatsoever. Since we're notoriously lazy when it comes to actually plugging in our phones and syncing, we fired up the program on our jailbroken 3GS in order to see exactly what the law-abiders in attendance were missing out on.
Installation couldn't have been easier. We parted ways with our Hamilton, downloaded the necessary companion software for our laptop, and fired up the application. The iPhone was immediately recognized, and after a few prompts we were ready for action. Syncing was just as easy as it normally is (with "easy" being a relative term here), just without that iPod wire hanging around and bumming everyone out. We will say, however, that things weren't as snappy OTA as a standard hardwired connection. It was a bit sluggish on the first couple of runs, and although iTunes crashed a few times (boo), we're fairly confident in saying that a poor WiFi connection was to blame for the jankiness. Once we migrated closer to the router, things went much smoother. Still unsure if it's worth the investment? Then give the video past the break a look.Continue reading Wi-Fi Sync for iPhone video hands-on: it works!

Android 2.2 sets Android 2.1 on fire. From the friction. Because it’s so fast.
Posted on May 12, 2010 | No Comments
Man oh man. While it may just be benchmark scores at this point, this kind of speed increase is nothing to snuff at.
Ian Douglas has run some benchmarks on his Froyo-powered Nexus One, and it's scoring almost 5 times better.
To be a bit more specific, an Eclair-powered Nexus One usually scores around 6-7 MFLOPS in Linpack benchmarks, but this shiny new Froyo build delivers a blistering 38-40 MFLOPS.

Quelle horreur! The 16GB iPad will cost 499 Euro in France?
Posted on May 4, 2010 | No Comments
Some weird leaks over in Franceland point to the 16GB iPad costing 499 Euro (approximately $655, depending on how low the Euro can dip). These listings appeared on Fnac's RSS feed which means they may have been entered inadvertently and/or incorrectly.
No word on official availability or pricing but, as we recall, Apple postponed the international launch until the end of May

Oots oots oots! Rock the iPad Dev Camp with your iPad DJ mixer!
Posted on April 21, 2010 | No Comments
Scoble interviews Rana Sobhany on her iPad DJ mixing set-up. It's actually quite cool, but Scoble prepping himself to take on some Dubstep is a bit comical to imagine. I'm sure, however, he's a very capable House dancer.
All of her explaining, however, really takes the magic out of all of this. I'd rather maybe, you know, hear some actual music.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 Now Available for iPhones Everywhere
Posted on April 7, 2010 | No Comments
I have fond memories of playing Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 on my PlayStation back in high school. I remember trading stories with friends about the biggest tricks I'd pulled, and being astounded at the scores that "a friend of their's" could pull in a single trick. I remember single-mindedly trying to beat those trick scores, re-starting a level each time I bailed so that I could achieve that perfect run. Sadly for me, no other Tony Hawk game that I've played has been able to capture that magic. So I was very pleased to find out that that classic of classics, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, has now been released for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Dude, you’re getting a Dell and a Sony Reader
Posted on March 31, 2010 | No Comments
The details are simple: buy a select Dell notebook or desktop and a Sony Reader Pocket Edition ships along with it for no additional cost. It's actually a nice little deal although it's only for two days. Of course like with most sales, the actual cost savings is minimal as the sale price is likely inflated to included the cost of the ereader, but that's fine. Ereaders tend to be something the consumers are curious about and are unwilling to pull the trigger just yet. Getting more ereaders in the average joes that buy Dells might help the whole industry.
