iPhone 3G, iOS 4, and you — what’s missing (spoiler: multitasking)
Posted on June 21, 2010 | No Commentsdigg_url = 'http://digg.com/apple/iPhone_3G_iOS_4_and_you_what_s_missing'; While iOS 4 is delivering on every promise for the iPhone 3GS users out there, as we were all told up front, the iPhone 3G would be missing some of those touted new features. Granted, we knew such disparities would exist but were never given the finer details. Now that the final build is percolating through the internet, we decided to take a look at what features are and aren't working on the earlier year's model.
What's there- Folders
- Threaded mail
- iTunes playlist creation / editing
- 5x digital zoom: just tap on the display near the capture button, but be warned, it doesn't paint a pretty picture
- iBooks: we were having issues with the earlier build, but it seems to be running fine after today's official download -- PDFs work, too.
- Photos: you can now sort by albums, events, faces, and places
- Game Center: the icon is present, but as of this writing we're unable to connect to the servers. (Update: a number of readers saying it didn't come with today's download. We nabbed ours as a gold build, which might explain the discrepancy despite still being considered "up to date" by iTunes.)
- Spell check has been updated
- Spotlight search: you can search the web and Wikipedia from the home screen search bar. That said, not all our queries -- "Engadget," for example -- weren't offering the option. [Thanks, jkane08]
- Multitasking: this is the big one. Double-tapping the home button doesn't give you the handy menu, there's no fast app switching, and background use is missing in action.
- Screen lock: normally in the multitasking menu (which isn't available on 3G), it's nowhere to be found, even under Settings. Bummer.
- Home screen wallpaper: you'd think this simple addition would make the cut, but sadly no. The dock has been given a visual upgrade, though.
- Bluetooth Keyboard support: we haven't tried this ourselves, but an influx of reports from Twitter suggest this is also a no-go.

HTC Aria goes official for AT&T, gets toyed with on video (update: $130, coming June 20)

In what's easily one of the most curious product introductions of the year (in terms of method, not design), AT&T has seemingly just made official the first not-awful Android device to be sold in subsidized fashion for its network. 'Course, those who don't mind ponying up for an out-of-contract phone have been able to to pick up an AT&T-compatible Nexus One for a few months now, but contract lovers have been stuck with the Motorola Backflip and the promise of Dell's admittedly underwhelming Aero. Dante Martin, a product manager at the carrier, has followed up on a prior video with a confirmation that the HTC Aria is indeed "launching on AT&T," though he gives precisely no specifications in his address posted after the break. All we know is that the phone will most certainly ship with Sense and an optical trackball, but mum's the word on a price or release. For now, anyway. Here's hoping this is just the beginning -- AT&T needs a decent dose of Android in the worst possible way.

Update: Ah, and here's the official presser. It's a mid-range phone with Android 2.1, a five megapixel camera, 3.2-inch HVGA capacitive touchpanel, inbuilt WiFi and support for 7.2Mbps HSPA. There's also a soft-touch back and a total weight of around four ounces, and AT&T says this one will be available on June 20th nationwide for $129.99 on a two-year contract (after $100 mail-in rebate, of course). As for specs? There's a 600MHz Qualcomm MSM 7227 processor, proximity sensor, integrated GPS, a digital compass, light sensor, 512MB ROM / 384MB RAM, a microSD card slot (2GB included) and a 1,200mAh battery good for up to six hours of yapping.HTC Aria goes official for AT&T, gets toyed with on video (update: $130, coming June 20) originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 14 Jun 2010 09:21:00 EST. Apple screenshot confirms iWork coming to iPhone

Our pal Stuart Miles at Pocket-lint spotted an interesting detail on one of Apple's iPhone 4 screenshots: an "Open in 'Keynote'" button while viewing an attachment in Mail. It's since been replaced by a shot that reads "Open in 'iBooks'," but it certainly seems like the iWork suite will eventually make it across the iOS range from the iPad. While we're not going to pretend like that's nearly a big a deal as Microsoft integrating Office into Windows Phone 7, it's still a welcome move, as we know more than a few people who'd like to make some work-type edits on the go. Why we didn't get a peek at this today we don't know, but we've got a feeling we'll hear more about it as June 21 gets nearer.

The second biggest news out of San Fran today? The announcement of iPhone OS 4.0, Apple’s biggest improvement to the iPhone OS since, well, 3.0. This new version includes multi-tasking (although backgrounding would be the proper term), app folders, a new version of Mail, and a carrier unlock (Not officially sanctioned by Apple, but available nonetheless).The weirdest thing? It’s now called iOS. And the iOS name is owned by Cisco.

Sprint officially kicks off sales of the HTC EVO 4G

A little over the top right there, but anyway: you can now purchase the HTC EVO 4G at Sprint.com, Sprint retail stores, at RadioShack, Best Buy and Walmart. The device sells for $199.99 with a two-year service agreement and after a $100 mail-in rebate with a new line activation or upgrade.

Nokia taps into developing markets by offering two dual-sim phones

Today in Nairobi, Kenya, Nokia officially unveiled their first two dual-SIM phones. Well, strictly speaking, they unveiled one double-SIM phone (the C1-00), and one dual-SIM phone (the C2). The difference being that the C2 can receive texts and calls on both SIMs at the same time, while the C1-00 has to toggle between them.
Both phones are targeted at developing markets (where having more than one SIM card is more common, as it means being able to take advantage of cheaper call rates for different situations), and as such, are cheap as all get up: €30 for the C1-00, and €45 for the C2.

Best Buy now offering Kin One free, Kin Two for $50 on contract

Why buy a Kin when you could get a more capable iPhone, Palm Pre or Android device for the same price? This week, it seems someone at Best Buy HQ has seen the light. As of today, the brick-and-mortar electronics superstore has knocked $50 off the price of both handsets, making the Kin One free and the Kin Two cost only $50 on a two-year contract, with no mail-in rebates or other nonsense required. Now, if only Verizon would do something about that $30 monthly data plan, your teen might finally have a vaguely compelling reason to pick one up.

Posted on May 26, 2010 | No CommentsAlright, you can go ahead and book up your June 2nd with other plans, because we've just heard straight from T-Mobile that the Garminfone has been confirmed for a June 9 launch "at select T-Mobile retail stores, select authorized dealers, and online" for the same $199.99 after $50 mail-in rebate on contract that we'd already known. We'll admit, we'd secretly been hoping that T-Mobile would've wowed everyone and dropped the launch price by $50 or $100 considering its midrange specs and the fact that you'll have to drop an astounding $250 in-store to take the thing home, but it's not to be; in a few months, perhaps?

Samsung’s Rugby II ready to put the smack down on AT&T for $130 on June 6
Posted on May 25, 2010 | No CommentsAnother in AT&T's parade of June 6 launches, the Rugby II follows up -- yes, you guessed it -- the original Rugby, a rugged clamshell from Sammy that's been in the carrier's lineup for well over a year now. It's got push-to-talk compatibility, 7.2Mbps HSDPA, a 2 megapixel camera, Video Share support, voice processing tech from Audience (the same company that handled the Nexus One's noise reduction circuitry), Bluetooth, and microSD expansion -- standard fare to be sure, but probably just right for the outdoorsy-type workers that'll undoubtedly be carrying it. Samsung Messager Touch comes to US Cellular for $50, still features odd spelling
Posted on May 24, 2010 | No CommentsLook, Samsung, we understand that "Messager" is probably trademarkable in ways that actual English words are not -- but it seriously still looks like a typo to us every time we type it, just as the original Messager did almost two years ago. Anyhow, the new model is distinctly different (and cooler) by swapping out the numeric keypad for a full 2.6-inch touchscreen with TouchWiz. It also gets a 2 megapixel camera, Blueooth, voice recognition, and microSD expansion up to 16GB, and it's available today for $49.95 after mail-in rebate in "black and vibrant eye-catching blue" (you be the judge on that one). Nokia and Yahoo announce ‘worldwide strategic alliance’ on email, IM, maps, and more
Posted on May 24, 2010 | No CommentsCarol Bartz and Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, CEOs of Yahoo! and Nokia, respectively, are on stage right now announcing a "strategic relationship" between the two companies on some of their core services. Nokia will be using Yahoo to power its Ovi email and IM services, while Yahoo will be using Nokia / NAVTEQ's competencies for its mapping and navigation services. Both companies see it as a way to grow their respective userbases, with Yahoo hoping to grab onto the 9 million Ovi users out there, while Nokia hopes that Yahoo could provide it a bit of a USA mojo. Interestingly, Olli-Pekka confronted the US problem head on: "We are an unusual global company in the sense that we are clearly a global leader in our industry, and yet we do not lead in the US." Carol was similarly forthcoming, saying that Yahoo had "lost its focus on maps a couple years ago," then correcting herself, saying that they "chose to focus on other areas." The first merged services should launch in the second half of this year.
During Q&A the big answer to everything seemed to be "scale," but we also heard Carol toss in "downstream" at an opportune moment. When asked how this relates to Android, iPhone and so forth, Carol clarified that this doesn't change anything they're doing on those fronts. "It's not exclusive from that point." Each service will be branded as "powered by Yahoo" or "powered by Ovi." Yahoo will be announcing some "social-like" services for its mail and IM soon, but it's unclear if that's specifically related to this announcement.
