Microsoft taking a loss on Kinect?

Inside sources close to the matter have said that the build costs of Kinect are near $150. When you add up all the time to write the software and the costs of the hardware, it gets expensive. This has many people at Microsoft concerned.

Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword announced along with vastly improved Wii interaction

Here we go: another E3, another Zelda. The latest in the Zelda canon is Skyward Sword, a MotionPlus compatible game that mimics the experience of holding a sword and a shield. Link's on-screen actions mimic your actions completely including the motion of a shield in front of you. Basically this is a more precise version of the previous Zelda Wii interface. With so many people trying so many motion controls, however, I wonder how exciting this will be in context.

  • What’s Missing From iPhone 4 Is Part Of What Makes It Great

What’s Missing From iPhone 4 Is Part Of What Makes It Great

On Monday, Apple officially unveiled the iPhone 4. After playing around with it for 20 minutes or so after the keynote, I can safely say that it's the most impressive mobile device I've ever seen. But plenty of people (many of which have never used the phone) disagree. Their arguments are mainly predicated on what Apple didn't include rather than what it did. But what those people fail to understand is that this is exactly what makes the new iPhone (as well as the previous iterations) so solid. During his keynote address on Monday, Apple CEO Steve Jobs noted that while Apple may not be the first to release features, they do so in a way that's the best implementation. Many people view this as absolute bullshit. But what that implies is that they think Apple simply cannot get features done in time -- or that they will not do them for some reason. I have a hard time believing either of those is the case.

  • Why are people against the FCC’s National Broadband Plan?

Why are people against the FCC’s National Broadband Plan?

Up until a moment ago, this was going to be a standard "newsy" post: the FCC will announce its National Broadband Plan on Tuesday, here's what it's all about. Then I read the comments of a PC World article discussing that very same plan—many people are outraged that the government would muscle its way into the free market! If Americans wanted fast broadband then the market would provide it on its own terms. That, of course, is complete nonsense: plenty of Americans live in one-ISP towns, and if said ISP provides terrible service, well, though cookies, chico. This is America! Love it or leave it~!

  • Video on demand: The patron saint of Tribeca Film Festival?

Video on demand: The patron saint of Tribeca Film Festival?

Is video on demand the key to making your spiffy indie movie the next Huge Success? Depends on who you ask. The Tribeca Film Festival will experiment with VOD this year, having signed deals with cable providers like Comcast, Verizon FIOS, and Cablevision (a New York-area provider, for those of you who've never heard of it before) to create a Tribeca VOD channel. The thing is, even though putting a film on VOD is a guaranteed way to increase its exposure, there seems to be a bit of a stigma attached there.

In Photos: Handsome, timeless tattoo set

For many people, the decision to get a certain tattoo is based on a perceived notion of timelessness – the death of a good friend or family member, your spouse(s), barbed wire, etc. – and I think this guy nailed it, too. Unless something crazy happens, like a controller that’s somehow newer than the [...]

  • iPhone in Korea off to a good start

iPhone in Korea off to a good start

The iPhone officially went on sale in China at the end of October and in Japan in summer last year, but many people in one important Asian market were still waiting for it the whole time: Korea. After getting the official government approval in mid-November, the country’s number two mobile carrier, KT Corporation, started rolling out the iPhone on November 28. And it can be happy about a pretty successful roll-out.

However, there is an event coming up on December 7th right around the corner from John's house where we should learn more. I'm already excited though. Just think what this means.
