Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 ‘Rockstar’ contest wraps up, neat apps ensue
Posted on June 10, 2010 | No CommentsThe success of Windows Phone 7 as a commercially viable mobile platform will ultimately depend on a great many things, but one of the biggest factors might be its chops as a gaming setup -- so naturally, we're excited to see each and every WP7 game that gets previewed right now. In March, Microsoft kicked off its so-called Rockstar competition, where student teams competed to make awesome apps (games or otherwise) for the platform in their choice of Silverlight or XNA -- and the results of the competition are finally in. Two of the top three winners were games, and the grand champion was a game by the name of -- wait for it -- "Droid." Members of the team are receiving $8,000 plus a Windows Phone, and while none of these apps are the most polished things in the world, it's a promising sign that these students were able to come in fresh on a brand new platform and produce solid version 1.0 software in less than three months' time. Hit up Microsoft's Windows Blog for the full list of winners.Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 'Rockstar' contest wraps up, neat apps ensue originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 10 Jun 2010 00:00:00 EST. Infinity Ward vs. Activision: Whose side are you on?
Posted on March 4, 2010 | No CommentsI’m sorry, but I’m absolutely loving this Infinity Ward-Activision brouhaha. Here you have one of the most respected developers out there at odds with a publisher that must seriously have no idea what it’s doing. If Activision thinks it can slap the Call of Duty name on any ol’ game, made by any ol’ developer, [...] -
New Pwnage Tool for 3.1.3 available
Posted on February 8, 2010 | No CommentsFear not, people who jailbreak your 3GSes! PwnageTool for the latest firmware, 3.1.3, is available and ready to crack, hack, and otherwise damage your iPhone. I’ve stopped hacking my 3GS simply because too many things break after unlock. You should also keep your “SHSH hashes” backed up (basically keep the keys to previous versions lying around [...] -
Behind The Scenes at Cirque du Soleil
Posted on January 12, 2010 | No CommentsI’ve always been a fan of Cirque du Soleil and I make sure to go to a show when they are in town either in San Francisco or in Las Vegas. I got a backstage tour of their latest extravaganza, OVO, in San Francisco when they were in town. I caught up with Gerard Edwards-Webb, [...] -
Palm Pre plays Need for Speed, undercover (video)
Posted on December 29, 2009 | No CommentsWhile Palm's Pre is many things to many people it still can't game. Oh sure, it'll play Magic Fortune Ball like a champ but when it comes to intensive 3D action the Pre is as helpless as a would-be terrorist trying to ignite his underwear. See, webOS and the Mojo SDK currently can't exploit the GPU the way other smartphone platforms can. Rewind a few weeks, however, and we're reminded of a video showing EA's Need for Speed Undercover running impossibly smooth on a Pre. At the time, the video and claims of the device running Flash were shot down as fake largely due to the accompanying screen caps of the purportedly new App Catalog. Well guess what? Those screen caps were vindicated today with the webOS 1.3.5 update that just so happened to launch a new App Catalog matching the leaked images, exactly. That lends credence to the video then doesn't it, while hinting at future apps and games with full OpenGL graphics support. Is that the big reveal at CES alongside enhanced Pre+ and Pixi+ handsets headed to Big Red? We'll find out shortly enough -- until then check the gameplay after the break.
[Thanks, Brian K.]Continue reading Palm Pre plays Need for Speed, undercover (video)

The Electrobite makes it fun and exciting to be handicapped
Posted on November 4, 2009 | No CommentsThere isn’t many things cooler than the Electrobite. Maybe the Snuggy, but the Snuggy won’t score you major nerd points. This little guy will. Boing Boing took the homemade trilobite-shaped vehicle for a ride and you must watch the video. -

Review: Nokia N97 – So close, yet so very, very far.
Posted on July 9, 2009 | No CommentsOh, Nokia N97. I wanted to touch you from the first time I laid eyes on you. You seemed like everything I wanted in a handset. You’d be the phone that surmounted the shortcomings of every smartphone before it. You were to be the mobile masterpiece. At least, I thought you were. I’ve had the [...]
