Nokia throws down a €15 bike cell phone charger
Posted on June 3, 2010 | No Comments
It only makes sense to harness a bit of your bike's pedal power to do good. That's exactly what Nokia's bicycle charging kit does, although we must admit that it's not the first of its kind by any means. These sort of chargers have been around for years, but this is the first one we've from a company such as Nokia.

How-to: push Chrome / Firefox links to your Android 2.2 Froyo device (video)
Posted on May 31, 2010 | No CommentsWhile we absolutely adore our Nexus One -- now that it's got a bellyful of that fabulous frozen yogurt -- one of the most exciting Android additions shown off at Google I/O isn't actually slated for Froyo: the ability to push apps and music over the air from computer to phone. The underlying framework apparently is, though, and thus a bite-sized version of the functionality is already available at Google Code. If you're one of the lucky few running Android 2.2, you can get an extension for Chrome and Firefox web browsers that will let you push URLs, Maps and YouTube video links direct to your device using a Google Account. You can think of it as an early foray into a Continuous Client, perhaps, sharing with yourself before you head to a business meeting. Better yet, share an account with a group of friends and push interesting items to everyone on the go. See how (and see it in action) right after the break.Continue reading How-to: push Chrome / Firefox links to your Android 2.2 Froyo device (video)

Nokia updates N900 to version 1.2 in UK, closes door on MeeGo
Posted on May 25, 2010 | No CommentsYou've overclocked it and hacked it to run OS X and Android, now you can return your N900 to its native Maemo 5 OS with the launch of a version 1.2 software update. The V10.2010.19-1 bump now available in the UK (global on Wednesday) packs several enhancements including face-to-face video calling, improved Ovi Maps, and a better email experience with bundled Facebook IM Chat and the ability to accept or decline event invitations from the inbox. You'll also see a number of new games when the Ovi Store switches over on Thursday.
And after much speculation, Nokia's also admitting that MeeGo will not be officially supported on the N900 once the Intel / Nokia OS is device ready. Nokia will continue to support the core Maemo OS, however, as demonstrated by today's update. Regardless, we're sure that the N900's active fan-base will deliver a MeeGo update outside of official channels, especially since the N900 is already being used as a platform for ARM-based MeeGo development.

Nokia’s Ovi Maps gets faster, Qype reviews with SR4 (video)
Posted on May 21, 2010 | No CommentsWhen we reviewed Nokia's Ovi Maps and pitted it against the competition from Google we found it was by far the quickest to calculate routes and get you on your way... or back on your way if you meandered off. But, interaction with the app itself was a bit sluggish, something that's said to be fixed in version 3.0.4, also dubbed SR4. This version offers some serious performance improvements for tapping around the interface and also mixes in POI reviews from Qype. Qype is a sort of European version of Yelp with a similarly silly name, and while that doesn't help we Americans much, we always did feel like something of an afterthought to Nokia anyway. The new version of Ovi Maps is out now, so get it while the gettin's good.

Android 2.2 Froyo officially announced
Posted on May 20, 2010 | No Commentsdigg_url = 'http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/20/android-2-2-froyo-officially-announced/'; No huge surprises here, but Google just announced Android 2.2 "Froyo" at I/O, and the big addition is a just-in-time compiler, which brings a 2-5x speed boost to the system. There are also 20 new enterprise features, including better Exchange integration and device administration APIs, as well as a new device backup app that'll let you transfer personal data to a new device. Android 2.2 also features a new cloud-to-device messaging API that Google called "much more than a push notification service designed to make up for a lack of basic features like multitasking," and of course, WiFi tethering -- which was used to get a WiFi iPad online during the demo to great cheers. Google also demoed a new JavaScript engine in the Android browser, which is billed as "the world's fastest web browser," and a Chrome browser plugin that allows you to send directions from Maps on your desktop directly to your phone.
It's all going on live right now, so make sure to go hit our I/O liveblog!Android 2.2 Froyo officially announced originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 20 May 2010 11:48:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.
