Android 2.2 Froyo officially announced
Posted on May 20, 2010 | No Commentsdigg_url = 'http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/20/android-2-2-froyo-officially-announced/'; No huge surprises here, but Google just announced Android 2.2 "Froyo" at I/O, and the big addition is a just-in-time compiler, which brings a 2-5x speed boost to the system. There are also 20 new enterprise features, including better Exchange integration and device administration APIs, as well as a new device backup app that'll let you transfer personal data to a new device. Android 2.2 also features a new cloud-to-device messaging API that Google called "much more than a push notification service designed to make up for a lack of basic features like multitasking," and of course, WiFi tethering -- which was used to get a WiFi iPad online during the demo to great cheers. Google also demoed a new JavaScript engine in the Android browser, which is billed as "the world's fastest web browser," and a Chrome browser plugin that allows you to send directions from Maps on your desktop directly to your phone.
It's all going on live right now, so make sure to go hit our I/O liveblog!Android 2.2 Froyo officially announced originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 20 May 2010 11:48:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Nokia partners with Harman to ’standardize’ cellular infotainment
Posted on May 17, 2010 | No CommentsThough Microsoft, RIM and possibly Google are already vying to be the center of the automotive infotainment push, a certain Finnish phone manufacturer says it wants to take charge -- in what seems to be the latest phase of its Terminal Mode initiative, Nokia's tapped infotainment provider Harman to "standardize" the interface between phone and car. Like Harman's last in-dash venture, a touchscreen and physical controls will be the focus, while your handset (rather than an Intel Atom) does the heavy lifting. Connected via Bluetooth or USB, your Nokia will play music, deliver Ovi Maps, respond to voice control and more, with the entire phone display duplicated onto the car's larger touchscreen for easy access and a set of auto-specific apps planned for Nokia's Ovi Store. It all sounds pretty swell, but it's still not clear how the companies intend to standardize anything beyond their balance sheets; we're not sure how much Nokia will appreciate you connecting a Droid to their Ovi-powered car. PR after the break.
Update: It appears that this is part of Nokia's Terminal Mode initative, which -- as some have noted in comments -- we've actually told you about before. Whoops!Continue reading Nokia partners with Harman to 'standardize' cellular infotainment

Halo: Reach multi-player beta is really quite fun
Posted on May 3, 2010 | No CommentsI spent a few hours last night playing the Halo: Reach multi-player beta. (Microsoft sent out a few early invites to writing-guys like me, but the beta opens to Halo: ODST owners today.) It's been a while since I've played a Halo game for any real amount of time. I dabbled with Halo 3's multi-player for a little while there, but that was two years ago. First impression of the Reach beta: absence makes the heart grow fonder. New developer challenge offers Android devs a trip to TED if they can get people moving
Posted on April 26, 2010 | No CommentsObesity sucks. Unfortunately, smart phones generally don’t do much to make the problem any better. Sure, there are plenty of exercise-assistance apps, like RunKeeper, built to make exercising easier and thus more likely to happen — but for the most part, our smartphones help us to move less. Why walk to the computer downstairs, when [...] -
