iTiki iPhone Case…Um, something is wrong with me, because I kinda want one?

Anytime the press release for a new product says something like this, I’m bound to pay attention: iTiki™ is a South Pacific deity from the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii, who protects iPhones from enemies. iTiki is more than just the original tiki-based iPhone case. It’s the silicone incarnation of the same spirit who, according to [...]

Japan’s giant Gundam statue returns, this time armed with a saber

The giant Gundam statue that protected Tokyo last summer was so cool that we covered it multiple times. In September 2009, Bandai (the company responsible for the marketing coup) decided to retire Gundam once and for all. But five months later, in December 2009, the city of Shizuoka (some 125 miles west of Tokyo) announced it plans to re-erect the statue in July this year. And now it has come to light that it will really happen [JP] (on the 24th of July, Gundam’s 30th birthday, to be more exact). Shizuoka is the city where most of the Gundam plastic models come from.

    BE-ENV: Panasonic Japan’s expensive, cool e-bike

We've covered plenty of electric bicycles from Japan in the past, but let's be honest: Most of them are really ugly, for example these (technically interesting) models Sanyo introduced three weeks ago. But this new Panasonic e-bike, the BE-ENV [JP], looks rather cool and is something I could see the younger (and male) population actually using, too.

.canon: Canon wants to establish its own top-level domain

Megalomania or genius marketing move? Canon seriously takes aim at becoming the world's first company with its own generic top-level domain (gTLD), namely ".canon". The new domain would join the likes of .com, .edu, .gov, .org, etc. (Wikipedia has the full list). The Japanese electronics giant announced [press release in English] its plan to acquire the rights for the domain from ICANN today.

  • Nokia slashing smartphone lineup in half for 2010

Nokia slashing smartphone lineup in half for 2010

One of the natural side effects of being the largest maker of cellphones in the world is that you produce a lot of different models -- a lot -- which makes it way too easy for product planning, engineering, and marketing to all have corners cut for even the most important devices in the herd. Nokia seems to be coming to terms with that, though, announcing that it'll scale back from "around 20" smartphones released this year to roughly a half of that in 2010, allowing it to give each phone the TLC it so desperately needs. Interestingly, the company says that it's looking to the low- to midrange smartphone realm as a hot new competitive frontier -- and an area where it'll "have tools to play offence [sic] as well as defense," possibly thanks to its continued involvement in Symbian even as it looks to Maemo to grow the high end. By any measure, it sounds like Nokia's starting to get the hint -- but it's still anyone's guess what kinds of products will ultimately see out of these guys over the next 12 to 18 months.

Nokia slashing smartphone lineup in half for 2010 originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 03 Dec 2009 16:21:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.
