There will be a Mass Effect movie. Will Lost’s Matthew Fox play Commander Shepard?

It's takes a special type of nerd to read a video game's novelization, and I'm none too proud to say that I recently started reading the Mass Effect novel. But there's a certain quiet dignity in reading a novelization that simply isn't present when sitting at the multiplex (or downloading the Blu-ray rip, as it were) watching a movie. Get ready: EA has sold the movie rights to Mass Effect, and it's gone to Legendary Pictures, the same people behind The Dark Knight, Watchmen, and The Hangover. So there's hope the movie won't be total dross.

Not everyone wants their hand held when PC gaming

One of the bigger stories this past week was OnLive heading to the UK. The service promises to make PC gaming more accessible by hosting all of the hardware—you simply supply a broadband connection and a Web browser, and you'll be playing the likes of Mass Effect 2 in no time. If it works as described, great. There's nothing wrong with exposing PC gaming to more people.

OnLive strikes deal with BT in the UK, brings streaming video game service across the pond

OnLive, the streaming video game service that threatens to change the way people perceive gaming, has signed a deal with with British Telecommunications. The deal means that Britons will be able to play games like Mass Effect 2 and Assassin's Creed II over their broadband connection (and it also means that BT will buy a small stake in the company). No UK launch date has been announced. The U.S. launch is still on schedule for June 17.

U.S. military launches unmanned X-37B spacecraft. Too bad it refuses to tell us what it’s for!

It's all a bit like Mass Effect. The U.S. Air Force successfully launched the X-37B unmanned spacecraft yesterday, but the question that nobody knows the answer to: what's it for? The Air Force refuses to say what the X-37B's mission on beyond something along the lines "we wanted to see if it works." OK, but do you plan on doing with it? "Sorry, classified." Neat.

Bravo to Epic Games for porting Unreal Engine 3 to the iPhone

Don't get mad at me—I wanted to go to GDC, but The Man said no. So now we're relying on CNET to bring us word of Epic Games' efforts to bring the Unreal Engine to the iPhone. You may not have even played Unreal for several years, but plenty of big games are based on the engine. Mass Effect and BioShock are based on versions of the engine, as is EA's upcoming Medal of Honor. Just think: playing Unreal on your iPhone. It's almost... unreal.

Because of leaks, we need to immediately implement DRM on console games

It's time we start implementing DRM on console games. I mean, look at this nonsense. The Xbox 360 version of BioShock 2 leaked yesterday, a full five days before its official release. The same thing happened with Mass Effect 2, which leaked something like six days for the Xbox 360 before its official release. Since publishers are so keen to treat PC gamers like filthy thieves, I say we start implementing annoying DRM on console games, too.

This weekend’s deal is the FarCry collection, which includes FarCry and FarCry 2: Fortune’s Edition (includes DLC and other bonus items). Where were you when the Xbox 360 version of BioShock 2 leaked? (Because it just did, you see.)

Five days. We’re a whopping five days away from the game’s official release date, but BioShock 2, the second truly big game of the year (the other being Mass Effect 2) has now leaked. Well, the Xbox 360 version, that is. It’s found where these type of things can be found, and I only mention [...]

The Alienware M11x netbook gets priced, dated and detailed

The Alienware M11x is an odd duck. The company calls it a netbook, but it's packing a Core 2 Duo CPU and 1GB NVIDIA GT 335M GPU. Even the 720p-capable 11.6-inch screen doesn't exactly screen netbook. Then there is the target $899 price that just knocks it the hell out of the netbook realm. So, yeah, let's just call the M11x what it is: an ultra-portable.

Mass Effect 2 for the Xbox 360 has leaked. So, you know.

Oh, the ironing. Big Daddy Cool, John Biggs, just interviewed Casey Hudson, from BioWare, about Mass Effect 2. It was streamed live! The beauty is, while they were talking about the game, kids with modded Xbox 360s all over the world were already playing the game. Yes, the game has leaked. Granted, it's only a few days before the game actually comes out, but still, the biggest release of the year (so far) is now available where you find such things. I'll be getting the PC version via Steam, thank you very much. (There's nothing after this. Clicking Read More is a waste of your time.)
