  • What’s the fastest Internet city in America?

What’s the fastest Internet city in America?

Remember when 56K modems first came out? I remember walking around the mall thinking to myself, "Man, the Internet must be so fast with that thing!" I mention this because Akamai Technologies, the company which pretty much powers the Internet's biggest sites, has published a list of the fastest Internet cities in America. The winner is Berkley, Calif., which has an average Internet speed of 18.7 Mbps, followed by Chappel Hill, NC (17.5Mbps), and Stanford, Calif. (17.0 Mbps). Notice anything? Yes, those cities are the home of large research universities. Gotta trade noted across the world lickety-split!

  • Apple refreshing the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air line next week?

Apple refreshing the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air line next week?

Nicholas just voiced a valid question in the always-entertaining but private CrunchGear chatroom, "Why would I pay $1,500 for a Core 2 Duo in 2010?" He then answered it by saying, "I wouldn't." Well said, sir. Apple's current crop of notebooks are a slap in the face to its customers, but maybe Apple will finally catch up to HP, Dell, Acer, Gateway, Lenovo, Alienware, Asus, MSI, Sony, and Toshiba next week if this rumor pans out.

Apple may or may not be testing USB 3.0 controllers

USB 3.0 is the future and, well, Apple likes to be on the edge of technology so it only makes sense that the company would be at least looking into implementing the new interface sometime real soon. After all HP is already shipping USB 3.0 in its Envy 15 series and that can't sit right with Apple fanboys. But all we know right now comes from a Digitimes report that basically states that Genesys Logic is denying reports that its providing Apple with controllers. So yeah, we don't really know anything.

  • FIOS packages strike your fancy?

    FIOS packages strike your fancy?

Verizon has a bunch of new FIOS packages that may interest you. The top of the pile is the Ultimate package, which gives you "90 or more" HD channels, plus an Internet connection of 35/35, which is 35 mbps download, 35 mbps upload. The upload speed is impressive, but I still have triple the download speed. (I seriously run at 11 MB/s when downloading from Usenet. It's almost unnecessary how fast it is.) This top package is $149 per month.

  • T-Mobile bumps their entire 3G network up to 7.2Mbps, 21Mbps coming soon

T-Mobile bumps their entire 3G network up to 7.2Mbps, 21Mbps coming soon

T-Mobile might have been a bit late off the plate in rolling out their 3G network compared to the competition, but that gave them one small advantage: foresight. By the time T-Mobile started setting up towers, the world was already well aware that the same technology that powered their 3.1 Megabit per second 3G network [...]

  • Sony: World’s first TransferJet-compatible LSI for fast data exchange are ready

Sony: World’s first TransferJet-compatible LSI for fast data exchange are ready

TransferJet is a close-proximity wireless transfer technology that was introduced by Sony in 2008. Toshiba announced during IFA in Berlin this year they are planning to use the technology in their products soon. The idea is to let two electronic devices quickly exchange data, theoretically at up to 560 Mbps, just by bringing them close together (touch is possible, too). And today, Sony announced in Tokyo [press release in English] that the first LSIs supporting the standard will be shipped to manufacturers before December starts. The "CXD3267AGG" (pictured on the left) and the "CXD3268AGW" will cost $17.45 each. Sony says they managed to optimize the technology so that TransferJet can now be integrated into smaller electronic devices, too. The LSIs can be used by makers of cell phones, digital cameras, computers and HDDs.

The HP Envy 15 Beats Edition is noice. Look at that beast. You have to respect the matte black on black styling. Slow Chip Stifles iPhone 3GS Upload Speeds

The “S” in iPhone 3GS stands for “speed,” but it could very well stand for “slow” if you look at the dated chip it uses for uploading data. At Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, the company proudly boasted that the new iPhone 3GS supports 7.2Mbps High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) — a faster, next-generation network standard that [...]
