What’s the fastest Internet city in America?
Posted on April 21, 2010 | No CommentsRemember when 56K modems first came out? I remember walking around the mall thinking to myself, "Man, the Internet must be so fast with that thing!" I mention this because Akamai Technologies, the company which pretty much powers the Internet's biggest sites, has published a list of the fastest Internet cities in America. The winner is Berkley, Calif., which has an average Internet speed of 18.7 Mbps, followed by Chappel Hill, NC (17.5Mbps), and Stanford, Calif. (17.0 Mbps). Notice anything? Yes, those cities are the home of large research universities. Gotta trade noted across the world lickety-split!

Do the new MacBook Pros forgo raw computing power in favor of battery life? Yup.
Posted on April 13, 2010 | No Comments
Today's MacBook Pro refresh left a lot of us feeling, well, bored. The new notebooks aren't particularly powerful with dual-core Core i5 and Core i7 CPUs along with low-memory GPUs. They really aren't anything special compared to similarly-priced PCs. Numerous manufacturers offer a PC for around $2000 that comes with quad-core i7's, 1GB graphics card along with tons of RAM and a higher-res screen than what's in the new MBPs. It really seems that Apple didn't go with the most powerful hardware available to boost the projected battery life to previously unheard of levels.
Battery life is really the only compelling feature -- besides OS X of course -- in the refreshed MacBook Pros. Apple is claiming that the 15- and 17-inch can see between 8-9 hours while the smaller, Core 2 Duo-equipped 13-inch can rock for 10 hours straight. That's impressive even if Apple exaggerated those claims a bit.

Apple refreshing the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air line next week?
Posted on April 8, 2010 | No Comments
Nicholas just voiced a valid question in the always-entertaining but private CrunchGear chatroom, "Why would I pay $1,500 for a Core 2 Duo in 2010?" He then answered it by saying, "I wouldn't." Well said, sir. Apple's current crop of notebooks are a slap in the face to its customers, but maybe Apple will finally catch up to HP, Dell, Acer, Gateway, Lenovo, Alienware, Asus, MSI, Sony, and Toshiba next week if this rumor pans out.

Apple may or may not be testing USB 3.0 controllers
Posted on February 3, 2010 | No Comments
USB 3.0 is the future and, well, Apple likes to be on the edge of technology so it only makes sense that the company would be at least looking into implementing the new interface sometime real soon. After all HP is already shipping USB 3.0 in its Envy 15 series and that can't sit right with Apple fanboys. But all we know right now comes from a Digitimes report that basically states that Genesys Logic is denying reports that its providing Apple with controllers. So yeah, we don't really know anything.

FIOS packages strike your fancy?
Posted on January 19, 2010 | No CommentsVerizon has a bunch of new FIOS packages that may interest you. The top of the pile is the Ultimate package, which gives you "90 or more" HD channels, plus an Internet connection of 35/35, which is 35 mbps download, 35 mbps upload. The upload speed is impressive, but I still have triple the download speed. (I seriously run at 11 MB/s when downloading from Usenet. It's almost unnecessary how fast it is.) This top package is $149 per month.

T-Mobile bumps their entire 3G network up to 7.2Mbps, 21Mbps coming soon
Posted on January 5, 2010 | No CommentsT-Mobile might have been a bit late off the plate in rolling out their 3G network compared to the competition, but that gave them one small advantage: foresight. By the time T-Mobile started setting up towers, the world was already well aware that the same technology that powered their 3.1 Megabit per second 3G network [...] -
Sony: World’s first TransferJet-compatible LSI for fast data exchange are ready
Posted on November 30, 2009 | No CommentsTransferJet is a close-proximity wireless transfer technology that was introduced by Sony in 2008. Toshiba announced during IFA in Berlin this year they are planning to use the technology in their products soon. The idea is to let two electronic devices quickly exchange data, theoretically at up to 560 Mbps, just by bringing them close together (touch is possible, too). And today, Sony announced in Tokyo [press release in English] that the first LSIs supporting the standard will be shipped to manufacturers before December starts. The "CXD3267AGG" (pictured on the left) and the "CXD3268AGW" will cost $17.45 each. Sony says they managed to optimize the technology so that TransferJet can now be integrated into smaller electronic devices, too. The LSIs can be used by makers of cell phones, digital cameras, computers and HDDs.

The HP Envy 15 Beats Edition blazes its own path
Posted on October 10, 2009 | No CommentsThe HP Envy 15 Beats Edition is noice. Look at that beast. You have to respect the matte black on black styling. Apple fanboys can’t say anything about this edition of the HP Envy looking like their MBPs. The Beats Edition looks better. Too bad it suffers from all the downfalls found in the Envy [...] -
Verizon upgrades FiOS service, offers new goodies
Posted on June 22, 2009 | No Comments
Well, isn't this a kick in the pants? If you're wearing mine it is. Just last week I had Verizon's FiOS installed in my new apartment and today they announce new offers for customers and upgraded speeds. In short, I'm pissed.
