E3 2010: Hands-on with the surprisingly good AAA: Heroés del Ring

Rather than use E3 to pile on the mountains and mountains of hype of the big-bidget titles, I've elected to sprinkle through our coverage the small little gems that might otherwise go unnoticed. First on the docket is AAA: Héores del Ring a lucha libre (Mexican-style higly-flying pro-wrestling) game that'll hit your Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, and PSP on August 10 of this year. I had some quality time with it this morning and I can say this: I left the booth absolutely shocked at how thorough the game is.

Pixel Qi. If you haven’t heard of them, you will. Everyone will want one of their screens. They offer both a full color LCD screen and an E-Ink screen in one. From what I have seen so far, the technology appears to be very promising. Other companies seem to think so as well, and are lining up to use Pixel Qi screens in their devices

The U.S. Federal Government wants to take control of the Internet during ‘imminent cyber threat’

The federal government wants to take control of the Internet in the event of an "imminent cyber threat," as declared by the president. What constitutes an "imminent cyber threat"? You'd need two things: a known, pretty darn big flaw in the network and knowledge that someone was planning on exploiting that flaw. So, if you received a tip that, say, hackers working for the government of Rival Country were planning to exploit some Internet flaw in the next few hours, you'd call the president and say, "Hola. We have an imminent cyber threat on our hands. You need to give is the signal to protocol into place." And the president does, and the federal government is now all up in your Internet, connecting your tubes, etc.

Google ditching Windows because of Chinese hackers?

"See you in hell, Windows." That's Google talking, according to a report in the Financial Times. (Not an exact quote, mind you.) The company is taking several steps to phase out the use of Microsoft's operating system following the well-publicized China hacking situation. New employees are given the option of using a Mac or a Linux-based PC, and others are simply being switched over to Mac or Linux when the time is right. It's not an official Google policy, but rather something that's just being done.

Microsoft: So what that Apple is the ‘biggest’ tech company? We’re still rich!

Oh, Microsoft. Don't worry: people still love you. Also, people still hate you, so it all works out in the end. CEO Steve Ballmer told the Wall Street Journal something along the lines of, "So what Apple is now the "biggest" tech company in the land. Big deal. We still make incredible amounts of money. In fact, I'm going to go swim in my giant pool of money right now. Talk later." An exact quote? No, but it certainly captures the spirit that Ballmer was trying to convey: let Apple have its moment in the Sun, but we're not doing too bad for ourselves over here, you know?

mTouch: An affordable multi-touch web table

It's hard out here at Disrupt for gadget geeks, but we just got lucky. Merel Technologies is showing off a very cool multi-touch web table that uses gesture recognition, object recognition, and multi-user multi-touch to create a new way to interact with media and kiosk apps. The best thing? It costs $3,200 for the 32-inch model and $4,200 for the 42-incher and they're available now. The table is made by Merel Technologies in New York and it uses a stacked multi-touch layer along with an LCD TV to display the interface. A built-in PC runs the whole thing and you can tear it down to create a coffee-table sized device. You can also customize colors. Click through for our hands-on video.

Can’t sleep? Turn off your iPad!

You're an animal. You're a living creature not too dissimilar from a chimpanzee—well, I guess chimps don't wear sneakers—, and yet you constantly fight your natural instincts. Like, you're meant to be awake, alert and on the ready, during the daytime. The moment the sun begins to set you should be winding down your day. If the sun is down, you should be down, sleeping a deep sleep and giving your body's chemistry a chance to gear up for a new day of hunting and gathering. But no! You lie in bed late at night, staring into your band new iPad, destroying your circadian rhythm in the process. Look out, there's a lion behind you!
