Plex for Mac OS X adds hardware h.264 video decoding

Exciting news from Plex, the media center for Mac OS X that won my heart a long time ago. The devs have announced that they've integrated Apple's new video decode acceleration framework into the latest build. In English, that means all h.264-encoded video—and there's a lot of it out there—can be sent to your GPU for decoding, giving your CPU a bit more breathing room. It should make for significantly better 1080p video performance.

Video: Chikara has a video game?!

I truly have seen everything now. Apparently Chikara, the Philadelphia-based pro-wrestling promotion that mixes lucha libre, puroresu, and general tomfoolery will be releasing its very own video game, Rudo Resurrection. ("Rudo" means "bad guy" in lucha libre lingo.) Absolutely zero details have been announced other than that it will be available for "multiple platforms."

Nvidia commits to simultaneous desktop-laptop driver releases

Nvidia wants to help out you laptop gamers. How nice of them. From now on, the company will release both desktop and mobile drivers at the same time. This isn't such a big deal for desktop users, what with their fancy GTX 480s, but laptop users won't have to wait for the Dells and HPs of the world to release updated drivers. Nvidia's got you covered.

Videos: WePad’s interface moves oh so smoothly

This is the final version of the WePad, and it's currently earmarked for a July release. We'll see, of course. Anyhow, the device was shown off to the press in Germany earlier today, and several videos demonstrating the interface are now online for our viewing pleasure. It does look mighty slick, but you wonder if that's enough to take on Cupertino's “magical and revolutionary” device.

Left 4 Dead 2 DLC now available. Too bad Xbox 360 players have to pay for it.

There's pretty much no need to write this next story, especially if you're a fan, but... Valve, darling developers that they are, have released the very first DLC for Left 4 Dead 2, The Passing. I was supposed to mention this fact this morning, forgot about it, then logged into Steam to see something downloading. "What the heck is downloading? I don't remember authorizing this? Oh, it's the L4D2 DLC. Wasn't I supposed to write about that?" As you can see, I live a very exciting life.

Absolutely bananas Asus Rampage III Extreme motherboard first offered by Origin

This is the greatest motherboard that has ever lived. It's the Asus Rampage III Extreme, and it's designed for people who do insane things like run three video cards simultaneously alongside an Intel Extreme Edition processor. People need to run Metro 2033 (and, soon, Crysis 2) at 200 frames per second. Origin is the first enthusiast builder to offer the motherboard.

Looks like the FCC wants to replace your Cable Card with, I don't know, something useful. The new device, dubbed "AllVid," would work with a variety of media—TVs, computers, and the like—to deliver "multichannel video programming and Internet content." And I'm the Queen of England~!

The Adidas Jo’bulani will be used in the FIFA World Cup final

You're already familiar with the Adidas Jabulani, the ball that will be used during the FIFA World Cup this year. It's the roundest ball ever created—impressive—and hopefully Messi will score many goals with it. Well, now say hello to the Jo'bulani, the ball that will be used during the final game of the tournament. It seems to be a palette swap of the Jabulani, with gold paint in place of the Jabulani's green-black.

Marvel vs. Capcom 3 comin’ at ya Spring 2011

There's a couple things going on today. One, of course, it's some sort of smokers' holiday—they're celebrating on Ron and Fez on Sirius XM right now and I'm giggling like a fool. Two, Barcelona plays Inter in the Champions League. And, last but not least, Capcom officially revealed Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Raise your hand if you wasted a number of hours trying to pull off 100-hit combos in Marvel vs. Capcom 2 for the DreamCast!

    Are video games art?

I'm hesitant to write this because, really, who cares? And I don't mean that in a negative, cynical way at all, but rather in a practical way. Clearly there are people who enjoy playing video games, just as there are people who enjoy creating video games. Why should these people concern themselves with whether or not Roger Ebert, a 67-year-old man who wouldn't know the difference between World of Warcraft and The Legend of Zelda if you smashed his face in with the blunt end of the Master Sword, “approves” of their pastime or vocation?

WWE Latest: Two years after App Store launch, WWE launches 1st iPhone App

It took WWE almost two years to release an iPhone App, but here we are. That's right, today the company, which fancies itself as some sort of catch-all, cutting-edge entertainment juggernaut, has bequeathed upon the world WWE Latest, a 99 cent App for the iPhone and iPod touch. It's fairly basic, but should help those of you itching for, I don't know, Diva photos or Raw results. You do know your iPhone has a perfectly viable Web browser, right?

This isn't the best time to be a traveler. Europe is still fighting plumes of volcanic ash—FC Barcelona had to take a bus from Barcelona to Milan for tomorrow's game against Inter!—and now there's word that a computer virus has wrecked a Russia-China border crossing. Some 2,000 Russians visiting the Chinese city of Heihe found themselves stranded when the computer virus totally wrecked everything.

Video: How good is the Nintendo Wii emulator Dolphin? Let’s see how Resident Evil 4 does!

So a few days ago Dolphin 2.0 was released. Dolphin is a Nintendo Wii and GameCube emulator for Windows, Mac, and Linux, and it works quite well. How well? Here’s a video of me playing the Wii version of Resident Evil 4—which, yes, I do own, thank you very much. Yes, the CG intro plays twice, [...]

Shock: Graphics being equal, Crysis 2 said to run better on PS3 than Xbox 360 (but best on PC)

It was only a few days ago that Crytek and EA showed off Crysis 2 to the world's gaming press—and CrunchGear. It looks crazy, yes, and that finely tuned opinion—"it looks crazy"—is based on the Xbox 360 version. But if we believe Crytek's business development boss, then the game runs even better on the PS3 than it does the Xbox 360. The games may look identical, or extraordinarily close to it, but the Xbox 360 is being pushed far harder than the PS3. You probably already knew that, yes.

Zune HD hacked, entire hardware open to homebrew programmers

Potentially huge news for Zune HD owners—that means Devin and I. It has been hacked~! Yes, the good folks over at ZuneBoards have hacked the Zune HD to pieces, giving homebrew developers full access to the hardware, access that otherwise lay behind the XNA development kit. The Zune HD isn't too shabby, so I fully expect to see ports of popular emulators like FCEUX in no time at all.
