Plex for Mac OS X adds hardware h.264 video decoding
Posted on April 28, 2010 | No CommentsExciting news from Plex, the media center for Mac OS X that won my heart a long time ago. The devs have announced that they've integrated Apple's new video decode acceleration framework into the latest build. In English, that means all h.264-encoded video—and there's a lot of it out there—can be sent to your GPU for decoding, giving your CPU a bit more breathing room. It should make for significantly better 1080p video performance.

Mvix's Ultio Pro looks suspiciously like a commercial version of an HTPC. Designed with 1080p decoding, network media playback from a NAS or PC, and the option to add a PVR, I might have to get one of these to replace my old Xbox Media Center.

Posted on January 15, 2010 | No CommentsAs far as XBMC forks go, Boxee certainly appears to have the most heat. It has VC money pouring in, flashy deals with content providers, and you'll soon be able to buy a dedicated D-Link box to more easily use it on your TV. But Boxee isn't the only XBMC-based media center that's worth your time. It's not even the first XBMC fork to go out and make a name for itself. Plex, which is exclusive to Mac OS X, was Boxee before Boxee was cool. I recently talked to the lead developer, Elan Feingold, to get a better understand of what Plex is, what it does, and where it's going. Needless to say, if you're running Mac OS X, you ought to give it a shot. It's good.

Boxee will have an iPhone App

Oh, God, CES is next week. With any luck Las Vegas will mysteriously disappear à la "Lost" before the show starts. That would truly be ideal.

Patriot Box Office Media Player gets reviewed

I'm afraid it's time for me to upgrade my media center. My old Xbox just isn't cutting it any more, between the composite input and the lack of processing power, it looks like it may be time to put the old reliable out to pasture and upgrade to something new. Is the Patriot Box Office Media Player the solution? Well HardOCP seems to think so, and I think it just might be.

Update: Downgrading to 2.4 is the best way to get back Boxee and XMBC back on your Apple TV

To repeat, do not upgrade your Apple TV to 3.0 if you're running hacked ATV plugins like XBox Media Center or Boxee. I'm sure this will be fixed in a matter of days - if not hours - but as of right now it means a ride on the Failboat to Sad Trombone Town. That's right: this update destroys the only thing that makes Apple TV usable and good.
Also, as an added bonus, Apple TV firmware 3.0 is insignificant. It adds Internet radio to the package and improves the UI. It also adds Genius playlists. My cup, as they say, runneth over.
UPDATE - Post has been update with instructions for downgrading to firmware 2.4.

It adds a whole slew of Windows 7 and Media Center functions, along with fixing a ton of little bugs. Boxee Watches $6 Million More In Funding Stream In

Boxee, the media center software startup, has won a lot of fans with its open approach to streaming content. And as a result it has won some more money, to the tune of a $6 million second round, led by Boston's General Catalyst Partners. The new money will be used for growth: Both expanding the team and expanding the service's reach in the market, we're told.
But why now? After all, Boxee raised its first round of funding just 8 months ago, a $4 million round with Union Square Ventures and Spark Capital investing. "We've seen a lot of momentum over the past couple of months. It seemed like it made sense to go ahead [with a new round]," Boxee's new head of marketing Andrew Kippen tells us.

Boxee Swings For The Fences: Windows Support, MLB, Digg, Tumblr And Current All Launch Tonight

Boxee is holding an event in San Francisco tonight to declare a winner of its App Dev Challenge, in which third-parties created apps for the media platform. But the real winner tonight will be Boxee, which is also announcing a boatload of new features and functionality for its media center software — none bigger than a version of Boxee for Windows, finally.
While many developers go the other way, Boxee started as a Mac and Linux product first. But obviously, Windows PCs are the vast majority of the machines out there. "This is huge being able to serve the rest of the computer market," Boxee CEO Avner Ronen tells us. And that's undoubtedly an understatement, given the success Boxee has already had minus all those Windows users.

Hulu Desktop app puts a remote control friendly face on for Macs & PCs
Posted on May 28, 2009 | No CommentsApparently devoting developers to something other than the great boxee arms race of 2009, Hulu today took the wraps off of its Hulu Labs project, with several "experimental projects" giving a different spin to the TV show & movie-streaming site. None of them are bigger than the Hulu Desktop app, a "lean back" interface (what, they heard ten-foot was already taken?) that unleashes Hulu's Flash video from the browser and also supports Mac & Microsoft compatible six button remotes -- which makes their unwillingness/inability to continue boxee access or offer an official Media Center plugin even more confusing. Even those without HTPC's to try that out on, there is a Video Panel Designer offering customized embeddable widgets for website owners, a Recommendations section based on what you've already watched and a new Time-Based Browsing option to order programs by when they originally aired. Give them a try and let us know if this makes you forget about all the other ways that were already available (boxee, PlayOn, Secondrun.tv, Understudy, ReQuest, XBMC & others) to get Hulu on your HDTV.
