Sony Ericsson Satio, HTC Tattoo, and LG GM750 now on offer at Vodafone

Hey, Britons: about a nice three-pack of "wow!" to start your week off right? We'd like to direct your attention over to Vodafone, where three particularly notable handsets that we've been following in recent months are now in stock and ready for delivery. The HTC Tattoo represents the new low end in Android fare, bringing a resistive QVGA display and a 3.2 megapixel cam to the table -- it'll go out the door for free on a £25 monthly plan. Heading over to the Windows Mobile side of the trailer park, the GM750 is a Voda exclusive loaded to the hilt with that newfangled WinMo 6.5 everyone's been talking about these days; it comes loaded up with a 5 megapixel camera and, like the Tattoo, can be yours for nary a penny on a £25 plan. Finally -- get ready -- the Symbian-powered Satio from Sony Ericsson is ready for your consumption, all 12.1 megapixels of it, for just another 10 quid a month. We'll take all three, thanks.

Verizon’s new Entice is destined for the bargain bin

Calling all cheapskates: Verizon’s always had a solid, if at times unassuming selection of featurephones, and they’re ready to throw one more into the mix. For a scant $39.99 (after the obligatory $50 mail-in rebate), you’ll be able to snag yourself a brand new Motorola Entice W766 today. The successor to the W755 (also inaccurately known [...]

The Palm Pixi: A smaller Pre but without Wi-Fi

In a move akin to Herman’s Hermits opening for the Rolling Stones, Palm has decided to announce the new Palm Pixi, a phone akin to the Palm Centro of yore in price point and features, on the very day Apple will eat up the rest of the news cycle. This is in line with the [...]

Two days before Moto’s Android event, two handsets unearthed

Here comes the trickle, folks. With just two days left before the grand unveiling of Motorola’s first Android-powered device(s), the basic specs for two separate ‘Droid sets have shown up on Motorola’s own territory. CellPassion was hunting around in one of Motorola’s repositories when they found them: the MB200 and MB300. Could these be the [...]

  • Thank you, Canon, for dropping out of the megapixel race

Thank you, Canon, for dropping out of the megapixel race

The average mom and pop have judged digital cameras by megapixels alone since the beginning of time. Most people think that more megapixels means a better picture. A lot of the time brand, lens, or sensor type doesn't factor into the buying decision and why should they? Manufacturers have long catered to this mentality by outing cameras that constantly have more megapixels than others. But today's announcement of the 10MP Canon G11 point and shoot camera, Canon has officially dropped out of the race. The predecessor to this camera, the G10, had a whopping 14.7MP on a small sensor. That's a lot. But the camera also had issues shooting above 800 ISO and in low light. This can partly be blamed on the over-packed sensor. But the new G11's 10MP sensor should resolve some of those complaints. However, the surprisingly low pixel count also caused us to dismiss an early leak. It's not like Canon to drop the megapixel count on one of its halo cameras. This is from the same company that stuffed 21MP into the EOS 5D Mark II and leapfrogged the 12.1MP Nikon D700. But finally the average consumer might start to understand that megapixels are not the sole factor in the quality of a camera. It might take some explaining from a salesmen, but they have been doing that for years.

Rumor: Canon G11 to lose five megapixels, gain swivel screen?

This one looks very very sketchy. The next generation Canon G* line should be coming in the near future, and the rumors are already starting to fly. And while the picture looks more convincing then your standard photochop job, the list of specs are questionable. When you look at the leaked feature list it really starts [...]

Like Palm before the Pre, Motorola is on its last leg and the adoption of Google’s Android OS could make or break the handset division of the company. Oh Lord No. LG Shows 12MP Camera Phone

Hey, LG. Didn’t you get the memo? The one that said  ”12 megapixels is enough? In a real camera? We guess not. LG now joins Samsung in the “prestigious” 12 megapixel telephone category with its prototype Louvre, which we presume is named for the Paris museum and not the slatted wooden door. The portable telephone also [...]

Breaking: iPhone 3GS Camera Doesn’t Suck

One of the worst parts of the iPhones 2G and 3G was the camera. It wasn’t just that it was a low-res two-megapixel piece of junk. More, it was that it seemed tacked on in decidedly un-Apple way, a vestigial afterthought that, although integrated throughout the iPhone software, never felt as polished as it could. [...]

    Hands-On With The Nikon 85mm ƒ1.8

Lenses are arguably the most important part of a photographer’s setup. Sure, you might have twenty-something megapixels inside your camera, but if you have junky glass in front of it, every single one of those pixels will look awful. Before you upgrade your camera, upgrade the lenses. And think about fixed focal length lenses. They’re not [...]

  • Samsung’s Pixon 12: a dozen megapixels of cameraphone nonsense in June

Samsung’s Pixon 12: a dozen megapixels of cameraphone nonsense in June

After failing to show at the Mobile World Congress event in February, Samsung's rumored 12 megapixel cameraphone has finally arrived. Meet the Pixon 12 and its 3.1-inch AMOLED touchscreen with a Sammy promise of fast shutter speeds and quick browsing. As a camera, the Pixon 12 (M8910) brings a dedicated shutter button, touch auto-focus (wherever you touch becomes the focal point) that locks in to track moving subjects, Smart Auto mode that adjusts to conditions, and a 28-mm wide angle lens. The unit also saves images relatively quickly (for a cameraphone) so that you can fire off the next shot within 2 seconds. Just remember, more megapixels do not make for better photos especially when jammed tightly into a sensor small enough for a cellphone. And 12 megapixels translates to files ranging from 2MB to 18MB and beyond depending on the compression used (Samsung doesn't say). So ask yourself: is it really worth the storage space and the associated delays when uploading images to Samsung's Share Pix service (with Facebook, Picasa, Flickr integration) over the Pixon 12's built-in WiFi and HSUPA data? No rush, you've got time to decide -- Pixon 12 will be hitting Europe in late June, other regions sometime in August. One more pic after the break.

Update: Full specs just came in: 150MB of on-board storage (up to 16GB MicroSD expansion); quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, HSPA 900/2100MHz; Xenon + Power LED flash; 720 x 480 pixel videos at 30fps; internal GPS, and FM radio with RDS.

  • Sony Cyber-shot W180 and W190 cameras feature awesome digital zooms

Sony Cyber-shot W180 and W190 cameras feature awesome digital zooms

Sony just announced a pair of Cyber-shot cameras in Europe. Both offer Sony's smile shutter technology, 3x zoom stabilized with SteadyShot, 2.7-inch LCD, a claimed ISO 3200 sensitivity, and 7 automatic scene selection modes. The W180, though, has a 10.1 megapixel sensor to the 12.1 megapixels of the W190 (pictured). Oddly, Sony's pushing the 17x/18x digital zoom capabilities on these -- something we haven't seen hyped for a few years:
Pristine picture quality is further enhanced by the high-quality 3x optical zoom lens. Smart zoom boosts maximum magnification to a frame-filling 18x for W190 and 17x for W180 for even more dramatic close-ups.
In other words, these cams are targeting entry-level consumers prone to enjoying a Big Mac and tattle-rag while shopping instead of doing any real pre-purchase research. Available starting July in silver, black, and red for "an outstanding value." Backside front, after the break.
