Motorola Droid 2 fully exposed?
Posted on June 10, 2010 | No CommentsAnd finally, the puzzle pieces are coming together. There's been a lot of confusion the past few weeks about these two new models for Verizon in Motorola's pipeline, but by all accounts, this seems to be the A955 Droid 2 in its entirety -- the true successor to the original Droid, of course, and a distinctly different product than the more slate-like Xtreme. It looks like Moto has killed off the Droid's major pain points, giving the new model a more tactile keyboard and eliminating the nearly useless d-pad; the shiny bezel around the top half is a matter of personal opinion, but we don't think we mind it from the blurry shots we've seen.
As specs go, we're looking at a faster 750MHz OMAP core -- probably similar to the 720MHz silicon quoted in the XT720's data -- along with a 3.7-inch display, 8GB of internal storage paired with an 8GB microSD card in the box, and a 5 megapixel camera. What's missing is an HDMI port and Froyo -- current test units are said to be running 2.1, so hopefully we'll see a 2.2 upgrade in the near term. So, Droid owners: is this the golden ticket to get you to shell out another couple hundred dollars? Motorola announces EU-bound keyboardless Droid/Milestone: the XT720

Motorola today announced their latest Android offering, the Milestone XT270, which is basically a Milestone/Droid with an updated camera, HDMI out, and no QWERTY keyboard. The removal of the keyboard makes the device a perfectly pocketable 10.9mm thick (down from 13.7mm on the original Milestone).

Uh-oh! It seems that the super-fab (but electrically challenged) Sprint EVO 4G will be shipping with an unintentional stow-away.
Reports are floating around the net that some users who received their EVOs at Google I/O the other week are unable to save files to the MicroSD card. Instead, they get a permission error.

Posted on June 2, 2010 | No CommentsDid you get a Samsung Wave today, or perhaps early last week? You might not want to connect it to your computer, just in case. We're hearing anecdotal reports that the 1GB microSD card shipped with certain German units includes a nasty surprise: it automatically installs the trojan Win32/Heur using the file "slmvsrv.exe." While we're not sure exactly what the virus does or if it's widespread, there's no point in finding out the hard way, right? Install a good antivirus program and then format that sucker, or better yet, simply drop in a larger microSDHC card. Don't forget this thing plays DivX HD, people -- you're going to need more than a single gigabyte of storage.
Update: Samsung HQ got in touch with MobileBurn to confirm the existence of the virus in shipping S8500 Wave handsets, but said that the outbreak was confined to the German market's initial production run and all other shipments are A-OK. In2Pay is the name of Visa and DeviceFidelity’s money-grubbing iPhone case
Posted on May 18, 2010 | No CommentsVisa has been trying to finagle its way onto mobiles for quite a while, and its latest attempt, done in partnership with DeviceFidelity, has now been named as the In2Pay system for iPhones of 3G and 3GS varieties. Built around an app ensconced on a MicroSD card inside that oh-so-special iPhone case, this offers contactless payments anywhere that Visa's payWave is available, as well as secure access to buildings and computer networks. Yep, that sounds like it's definitely going to end in tears, but the brave cash collectors are pressing ahead. Trials are still set for the second quarter of this year, which makes them imminent, and soon thereafter we'll all be making our ill-advised purchases with even greater ease. We told you all the rumors, we told you it was available for pre-order, and now we're here to tell you, it's finally shipping! The Spring Design Alex eReader is shipping their pre-orders (at least the US ones) tomorrow. The Alex is that dual screen, Android based reader that many consider to be a very feasible alternative to the iPad.

Spring Design this morning announced that its dual screen Alex eReader will be available online today (the rumors were true!) for $399. Customers can thus start pre-ordering the Android-based multimedia e-reader, which supports eBooks in EPUB, PDF, HTML and TXT formats.
Spring Design says due to localization of international versions with partners, pre-orderded units placed on the Web in the U.S., will be shipped no later than mid-April.

Nook gets a softroot and its first homebrew app

Those wacky NookDevs have hacked the Nook to within an inch of its life, created a softroot for those who don't want to crack open their Nook cases to get at the soft and sweet MicroSD card inside. The softroot essentially "jailbreaks" the Nook, allowing you to install homebrew software onto the device.
You can download the software here and I've mirrored it here so we don't destroy their server (although I doubt there are enough hardcore Nookers right now). You should check back with the NookDevs often and always.

Verizon Samsung Omnia II impressions
Posted on December 22, 2009 | No CommentsWhen the Omnia II first appeared on our radar, two things caught our attention: TouchWiz 2.0 and Windows Mobile 6.5. To be honest, neither of these items really piqued our interest: we knew what to expect from WinMo and had serious reservations about Samsung's latest and greatest UI. That said, we were more than willing to suspend judgement until we saw her in action. With bullet points that include a 3.7-inch AMOLED display, 800MHz processor, and 8GB storage (before you even get to your microSD card), one could honestly hold out hope for a pretty decent product. Did the handset make for a satisfying, well-rounded smartphone? Or did it just find new ways of repeating the same old errors? You'll have to read on to find out.
