Acer Liquid A1 unboxed, video style
Posted on December 9, 2009 | No CommentsThe Acer Liquid A1 just started shipping in the UK, and right on cue we've got a video unboxing. Turns out the box housing the 1GHz Snapdragon-powered Android set is fairly interesting itself, with a magnetic hinged design that opens to reveal the charger, manuals, and bundled 2GB SanDisk microSD card and SD adapter. As for the phone, don't hold out for an Android 2.0 surprise -- it's running Android 1.6 with Acer's custom Spinlets UI skin on top, which equals a frowny-face from us. Hopefully Acer manages to update things if this guy ever comes to the States, but for now we'll just let you head past the break and check the video for yourselves -- we're sorry about the terrible Owl City soundtrack, but we had nothing to do with it.

Motorola Droid over-the-air update to 2.0.1 now available with less over-the-air

Seriously, don't let Verizon's tyrannical "we want to make sure the update goes smoothly" attitude get in the way of enjoying your Android 2.0.1 just the way you like it: fresh, piping hot, and served on the bleeding, jagged edge. Just because you haven't been carefully groomed and hand-picked to receive the Droid's latest (and first) firmware update over the air doesn't mean that you've got to twiddle your thumbs; thankfully, the binary has leaked onto the 'nets, which means you just need to copy it to your microSD card (Motorola graciously included a 16GB one with your phone, if you recall correctly) and follow a few simple instructions. Godspeed, Droid owner -- never let The Man hold you down. Not now, not ever.

BlackBerry Media Sync hits version 3.0 with 2-way photo management
Posted on November 24, 2009 | No CommentsEven after years of consumer-facing products and marketing, it's still tough to use words like "media" and "BlackBerry" in the same sentence -- but the fact of the matter is that RIM got out ahead of the 3.5mm headphone jack trend long before many other manufacturers did and currently offers cameras (not awesome cameras, but cameras nonetheless) on every modern model it sells. To that end, its Media Sync software has been helping suits get loose after the 9-to-5 with music management for well over a year now, and the latest version -- available later today -- adds some comprehensive photo capability to match. Media Sync 3.0 for Windows now includes automatic downsizing for pictures transferred from PCs to devices (wouldn't want to chew through your microSD card too fast, after all) and can automatically prompt users to pull in new photos snapped with the onboard camera after connecting. Makes you wish one of these things had a 5 megapixel sensor with decent optics, doesn't it? Look for the download to go live on RIM's site around noon today.

BlackBerry Bold 9700 gets handled, appreciated for its nuances

Our dear colleagues over at Engadget German have had a chance to play with RIM's just-announced BlackBerry Bold 9700 today, and every indication we've gotten is that this thing is a perfect -- if not extremely conservative -- successor to the first-generation Bold. Interface and network speed are both praised (both the 9700 and the Bold before it feature a 624MHz core, so there's some magic going on here) and the microSD card is now hot-swappable, meaning that you've got a theoretically limitless supply of storage space if you happen to be carrying around a pocketful of 16GB cards. I don't know why, but microSD seems to suddenly become an alternative for distributing digital content lately, at least in Japan.
Two weeks ago, a Japanese entertainment company was the first in the world to start selling digital content on a microSD card (a rock band sold its songs, videos and lyrics on PDF on a profesionally marketed microSD card). Last week, Disney Japan announced it will release selected movies on this medium in November. And today, Warner Bros. Japan said it wants to be part of MovieSD [JP], too (a new brand for movies stored on - you guessed it - microSD cards).

T-Mobile officially announces the BlackBerry Curve 8520

As expected, T-Mobile has announced the BlackBerry 8520. The latest BlackBerry Curve features an optical trackpad and not much else that the Curve 8900 already offers T-Mobile customers. I guess the media dedicated keys are cool and it’s certainly a first for the Waterloo-based telecoms granddad. Here’s what else you get for $130: a 2-megapixel camera, 256MB of RAM, 512Mhz processor, BT 2.0, Wi-Fi, and a 1GB microSD card (that’s it?!). BlackBerry Media Sync, which enables iTunes syncing sounds promising, but it still runs on EDGE. *sigh* I guess I'm really done with the BlackBerry on T-Mobile. Viva la Android!
