Research In Motion enters Chinese retail channel with BlackBerry 8910 Curve
Posted on June 19, 2010 | No CommentsRemember the mysterious BlackBerry 8910 Curve that showed up briefly back in January? Well, forget that -- this is the real 8910 here. RIM was at China yesterday to launch this familiar-looking device -- OK, it's actually just a 8900 sans WiFi, but it's also the first BlackBerry that'll be sold through Chinese retail channels -- carried by Digital China -- instead of just enterprise contracts. Nothing fresh from the rest of the specs: 2.4-inch 480 x 360 screen, quadband GPRS, 512MHz processor, 3.2 megapixel camera with flash, GPS, Bluetooth 2.0, and microSD expansion of up to 32GB. Press release and a couple more pics after the break, if you still care.Continue reading Research In Motion enters Chinese retail channel with BlackBerry 8910 Curve

Samsung Galaxy Beam: world’s first Android projector phone on sale in July
Posted on June 15, 2010 | No CommentsAh, here we go, Samsung's other cellphone with an integrated projector just got an official launch date. The Galaxy Beam (codename: Halo) with its 3.7-inch Super AMOLED display is now slated to hit Singapore in July. That means that the European and broader launch across Asia should be just around the corner if Samsung's claims from Feburary hold true. At launch, the world's first Android phone with a built-in DLP pico projector will be served version 2.1 of Google's confectionary delight. Specwise, we're talking 7.2Mbps HSPA data on 900/1900/2100MHz and quad-band GSM/EDGE, Bluetooth 3.0, 802.11n WiFi, an 8 megapixel autofocus camera with flash (front-facing VGA) and HD video recording, A-GPS, FM Radio, and an 1,800mAH battery. Memory is confusingly listed as "4Gb + 2Gb + 1Gb + 16Gb MoviNAND" made worse by no mention of microSD though it was definitely there when we went hands-on with Beam at Mobile World Congress. Specs after the break.Continue reading Samsung Galaxy Beam: world's first Android projector phone on sale in July

Nokia taps into developing markets by offering two dual-sim phones
Posted on June 3, 2010 | No Comments
Today in Nairobi, Kenya, Nokia officially unveiled their first two dual-SIM phones. Well, strictly speaking, they unveiled one double-SIM phone (the C1-00), and one dual-SIM phone (the C2). The difference being that the C2 can receive texts and calls on both SIMs at the same time, while the C1-00 has to toggle between them.
Both phones are targeted at developing markets (where having more than one SIM card is more common, as it means being able to take advantage of cheaper call rates for different situations), and as such, are cheap as all get up: €30 for the C1-00, and €45 for the C2.

Dell Streak official: exclusive to O2 UK (update: launches on June 4)
Posted on May 25, 2010 | No CommentsLet's all feign surprise now, as Dell has just gone official with its worst kept, though perhaps sexiest, secret ever. The former Mini 5 has been christened the Streak and is launching at the beginning of next month. The UK will be getting the first bite at this cherry, with the rest of Europe following soon thereafter and the US a disappointingly distant third with a launch "later this summer." If you've been living under a (Round) Rock, this is Dell's big foray into the smartphone market: a 5-inch supersized Android handset, housing a 1GHz Snapdragon, a 5 megapixel cam, 16GB of built-in memory (expandable to 48GB via MicroSD) and a customized UI. Curiously, Dell's opting to market the Streak as "the ultimate portable tablet pc" and would prefer that this device, albeit fully equipped to carry out cellular calls like a phone, not be called a smartphone.
We got a chance to play with it during a briefing in London recently, and frankly, aside from the snazzier paintjob, there's nothing new to report. Just like the prototype unit we've previewed to exhaustion, the device on hand was running Android 1.6 and Dell's skinning team hadn't yet laid on the goodies that we've been promised. The battery is the same 1,530mAh cell as before, and we even managed to get the browser to crash in the exact same fashion that our own Streak exhibits on occasion. Now that's consistency. We're not being told the specific Android version that the Streak will ship with, but a couple of flavors are being mulled over right now. Till we get more info, we suggest sitting back, relaxing, and perusing the gallery below for the roaring red number that's currently on show. It won't be available at launch -- you can have any color so long as it's black -- but "a range of colors and designs" will swiftly follow to sate any aesthetic concerns. Video and full press release after the break.
Update: The Carphone Warehouse listing for the Streak shows Android 1.6 as the OS with an "OTA upgrade available soon." Pair that with word direct from Dell that Android 2.2 and Flash 10.1 are coming "later this year," and you can connect your own dots [Thanks, Azza].
Update 2: O2's website now has a precise date for us: June 4.Continue reading Dell Streak official: exclusive to O2 UK (update: launches on June 4)

Jonesing for a bit more info on the hotter-than-hot HTC Incredible before its April 29 release?
Well, you lucky devil, the full spec sheet has been leaked ahead of the Verizon launch, and it looks, well, you know... incredible.
On top of the already-known Android 2.1 with HTC's Sense UI, the Snapdragon processor, the 8MP camera with autofocus + flash, and the 3.7" WVGA (800x480) AMOLED screen, there are a few nice surprises.

HTC Trophy details leaked in full [Updated]
Posted on February 3, 2010 | No Comments
When the HTC Trophy made its first appearance on that leaked 2010 roadmap back in early December, we said that it looked like a T-Mobile HTC Dash with a touchscreen.
Now that we've got a clearer picture and a bunch more specs on it, however, it looks more like a... well, a T-Mobile HTC Dash with a touchscreen.

The ‘Alex’ E-book Reader: Electronic ink, secondary color Android touchscreen
Posted on January 7, 2010 | No CommentsAnnounced today, the Alex E-book Reader is an interesting take on electronic books. The upper third of the device features a standard 6-inch electronic ink screen similar to Amazon’s Kindle and then the bottom part sports a 3.5-inch color touchscreen running Android (1.6). The two screens can be harmonized by taking a web page you’ve [...] -
Exclusive: Nexus One full specs detailed, invite-only retail sales starting January 5th?
Posted on December 23, 2009 | No Commentsdigg_url = 'http://digg.com/tech_news/Nexus_One_full_specs_and_retail_sales_start_January_5th'; We know you're itching to get your hands on a Nexus One -- Google's managed to build buzz here the way only a couple companies in the world know how. Unfortunately, it sounds like you're going to need to cross your fingers (or pull out that eBay emergency stash) to get one out of the gate, because we've got some intel here suggesting that it'll be available only by "invitation" at first. Our tipster doesn't have information on how those invites are going to be determined, other than the fact that it's Google doing the inviting -- if we had to guess, current registered developers are a strong possibility -- but the good news, we suppose, is that T-Mobile will apparently sell the phone directly at some to-be-determined point in the future. Oh, but that's not all -- we've got specs, too. Lots of them. Here are the highlights, but follow the break for the whole shebang:
- Android 2.1
- 11.5mm thick
- 512MB RAM, 512MB ROM, 4GB microSD in-box expandable to 32GB
- 5 megapixel camera with mechanical AF and LED flash
- HSPA 900 / 1700 / 2100, 7.2Mbps down and 2Mbps up -- in other words, yes to T-Mobile 3G and no to AT&T 3G, though you'll still be fine on EDGE
- 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED display

Thanko rolls out not one but two spy cams
Posted on December 14, 2009 | No Comments
Tokyo-based USB gadget maker today started selling two spy cameras, the so-called Camera Cap [JP] and the LED Spy Light [JP]. While it's a bit of a stretch to call the latter a spy accessory, the bizarre cap can surely be used for undercover reconnaissance and other shenanigans. As to be expected, both gadgets are kind of silly and powered by USB.

Onkyo to sell beefed up version of Kohjinsha’s dual-screen notebook
Posted on December 10, 2009 | No Comments
I'm sure many of you remember the pretty cool-looking dual-screen notebook Japanese company Kohjinsha announced last month (it's already available over here). As it turns out, another Japanese PC maker, Onkyo, thought the device is worthy enough to get rebranded and improved spec-wise. The result is the DX1007A5 [JP], which is slightly more expensive than the Kohjinsha original though.
So what's new? The device still features two sliding, LED-backlit 10.1-inch LCDs (no touch screens) but with an improved resolution of 1,366×768 (instead of 1,024×600). Onkyo also beefed up some internal specs: The notebook now has 2GB RAM (Kohjinsha: 1GB) and a 320GB HDD (Kohjinsha: 160GB) but doesn't offer the 1-Seg digital TV tuner anymore (which was usable only in Japan and parts of South America). And the body color changed to white.

HTC Bravo pictured more lucidly (Update: coming to US in January as HTC Passion)
Posted on December 8, 2009 | No CommentsWe realize we might have overfed you a little with that plentiful leak of HTC's 2010 plans, so here's a chance to better ogle and digest HTC's "Performance" flagship to be: the Bravo. Pairing Android with Qualcomm's 1GHz Snapdragon and presenting a 3.7-inch AMOLED facade, this certainly ticks the headline boxes, and the addition of a five megapixel AF cam capable of 720p video capture gives it an extra sheen of 2010 newness. The picture above is accompanied by less solid info indicating a 1,400mAh battery, which will be joined by the mandatory WiFi, Bluetooth and MicroUSB connectivity, plus MicroSD expansion, FM radio tuner, digital compass, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Then again, the source is the same bunch of heroes responsible for our extra early -- and accurate -- info on the HD2, so those specs may be considered pretty reliable. Oh, if you're wondering about the touchscreen, it's capacitive, like it should be.
Update: If you were wondering about the difference between the Bravo and the recently leaked Passion, there is none other than the branding apparently. We're also hearing that the above handset will be available in the US in January, a cool three months ahead of the expected European release.HTC Bravo pictured more lucidly (Update: coming to US in January as HTC Passion) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 08 Dec 2009 01:11:00 EST. I hadn't realized it until just this second, but it's been way, way too long since we've seen a monstrous carrier leak. I suppose after the heavily-detailed data dumps from the likes of AT&T and T-Mobile in 2009, the carriers have been tightening their grip. Fortunately, that hasn't kept what looks to be the majority of Cricket's 2010 product line up from leaking out.
