Square Enix considering adding Move support to Final Fantasy XIV
Posted on June 21, 2010 | No Comments
When the Move comes out this September, it'll be the games that drive rather people actually buy the peripheral or not. Square Enix is already looking toward that future, and plans to add support for titles like Heavy Rain, SOCOM IV and Final Fantasy XIV.

But this! This is big. Beginning with this fall's expansion, Lord of the Rings Online, the MMO developed by Turbine, will be totally free to play! Meaning, you download the game for free and can play online for free. Free as in beer, folks.

Is 3 Call of Duty games in less than 2 years overkill? If not, it’s awfully close.
Posted on April 22, 2010 | No CommentsSimply amazing. Just totally, out-of-this-world amazing. Activision is said to be working on no less than three new Call of Duty games, to be released before 2012. That's three games in less than two years. You'd think that Activision learned its lesson with Guitar Hero. Remember when Guitar Hero was white-hot in 2007? The game was everywhere! Now? Is there anybody left on the planet who has any interest in the game, or the genre as a whole?

EA drops fat cash on The Old Republic
Posted on March 11, 2010 | No CommentsWhat's it going to take to dethrone World of Warcraft? One of two things, I'd say: one, an asteroid smashing directly into the planet, with Blizzard at the exact location of impact, or two, Blizzard releasing World of Warcraft 2. The asteroid is more likely at this point. So you can imagine the time and money EA is putting into The Old Republic, the only MMO with a chance in hell of taking away even a fraction of WoW's subscribers.

Infinity Ward vs. Activision: Whose side are you on?
Posted on March 4, 2010 | No CommentsI’m sorry, but I’m absolutely loving this Infinity Ward-Activision brouhaha. Here you have one of the most respected developers out there at odds with a publisher that must seriously have no idea what it’s doing. If Activision thinks it can slap the Call of Duty name on any ol’ game, made by any ol’ developer, [...] -
Call of Duty cash cow will be milked completely dry
Posted on March 3, 2010 | No CommentsLet's go back to the year 2005. That autumn, RedOctane released a game called Guitar Hero. It was pretty successful, so it spawned a sequel, Guitar Hero II. That came out on the fall of 2006. One year later, Rock Band first popped up. Then, in the span of around two years, video game publishers lost their minds, and published approximaely 800 music rhythm games. Now you have a situation where not even The Beatles can make Rock Band big again. The lesson: don't saturate the market with same-y games too suddenly. With that in mind, laugh: Activision has created a “dedicated [Call of Duty] business unit that will bring together its various new brand initiatives with focused, dedicated resources around the world.” “Brand initiatives,” folks. Get ready for, like, 900 new Call of Duty games in the next few years!

No, Blizzard doesn’t hate your console, leaves open the possibility of developing console games
Posted on December 21, 2009 | No Comments
Oh, look, I'm taking a single remark from a lengthy interview and making an entire post about it. It concerns Blizzard, the famed developer of World of Warcraft and Diablo. You may think of Blizzard as a PC developer, but that ignores games like The Lost Vikings. Anyhow, Blizzard has said in an interview with Gamasutra, which always does good stuff, that it is not averse to making a console game in the future, just that it needs to be the right game.

Posted on November 4, 2009 | No CommentsReally big World of Warcraft news today, friends. (Why do I write so much about WoW? Oh, you know, it's just the biggest, most successful MMO in history. Not writing about it would be like covering tech with mentioning Microsoft or Apple.) Blizzard is now selling in-game pets that you can buy with real money, $10. We're talking cash money. Dollar dollar bill, y'all.
