  • Deadline Extended for Compulsory Phone Registration in Mexico

Deadline Extended for Compulsory Phone Registration in Mexico

Last week, we reported on the looming deadline facing customers of Mexican telcos, where they were made to register their personal details or else face disconnection. At the time of that post, there were still tens of millions of customers that needed to register. One week later, the deadline has come and gone, and while 1.49 million mobile phones were registered at the last minute, around 30% of mobile phone users have still failed to do so. Cofetel, the Mexican regulator, has come out and said that rather than disconnecting the unregistered accounts immediately, additional time will be granted to process all the last-minute registrations. Cofetel will continue to register all applications “that enter the system on time and in the correct manner”.

Tens of Millions of Mexicans May be Left Phoneless Come Saturday

Around about a year ago, a law was passed in Mexico that would enforce compulsory registration of personal details to a mobile phone account. The idea behind it was to help fight crime (Batman style) by inhibiting the method of delivering ransom and extortion calls. Telcos were given 12 months to collect the personal details of their subscribers. Come Saturday, that 12 months will be up, and despite radio and television commercials urging mobile phone users to register their name and address via text message, around 30 million lines are still unregistered. There is a push from telcos to have the deadline extended by a further 12 months, but senators have thus far refused requests to do so.

Quite the opposite!, yelled a character in a Charles Dickens novel. It turns out that as people continually use things like Twitter, Facebook, and the like, they're both expanding their social circle and increasing contact with said circle.

Location-based mobile social network Centrl integrates web version into its mobile apps

"Location" has been one of the most frequently used buzzwords in the web industry recently, with i.e. Twitter, Facebook and Google having substantially stepped up efforts in that area in the last few months. TechCrunch has always been particularly bullish about location-based mobile social networks, with Loopt, Brightkite or, most recently, Foursquare among the big names. But there are more location-based social networks out there, and one of them, Centrl, is now intending to further bridge the gap between mobile phone users and the web at large (a move we called for last year). The service, which has been available on the iPhone [iTunes link], Android, BlackBerry [JAD file] and Nokia since May 2008, extended its offering with a web app a few days ago.
