Brookstone, the specialty product retailer in malls across America, recently rolled out an updated mobile website complete with video to augment product descriptions. The site was developed by Usablenet, the same folks that recently worked on the Marks and Spencer mobile site. The site follows the footsteps of the Marks and Spencer site, and offers another good point of reference for successful mobile design, in case you needed "inspiration" for your own mobile design efforts.

  • Google Maps for Android adds transit departure times, Latitude friend suggestions

Google Maps for Android adds transit departure times, Latitude friend suggestions

One of Google's favorite pastimes is shoehorning bits of new functionality into Google Maps for Android, probably because... well, because it can -- updating a package on its own mobile platform is a heck of a lot easier than, say, getting Apple to add a feature to its Maps app. To that end, version 4.3 has just rolled out with three major additions: aggregated (and color-coded) business reviews broken down by topic, transit system departure times, and suggested friends for Latitude. We'll admit, we occasionally forget that Latitude exists, so this seems like a timely addition to get it back into the spotlight -- and if you live in New York, Chicago, or another city with a sprawling bus and subway system, we're sure you'll be amped about the schedules. Now if those times were actually correct, that'd be really mind-blowing.

Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 ‘Rockstar’ contest wraps up, neat apps ensue

The success of Windows Phone 7 as a commercially viable mobile platform will ultimately depend on a great many things, but one of the biggest factors might be its chops as a gaming setup -- so naturally, we're excited to see each and every WP7 game that gets previewed right now. In March, Microsoft kicked off its so-called Rockstar competition, where student teams competed to make awesome apps (games or otherwise) for the platform in their choice of Silverlight or XNA -- and the results of the competition are finally in. Two of the top three winners were games, and the grand champion was a game by the name of -- wait for it -- "Droid." Members of the team are receiving $8,000 plus a Windows Phone, and while none of these apps are the most polished things in the world, it's a promising sign that these students were able to come in fresh on a brand new platform and produce solid version 1.0 software in less than three months' time. Hit up Microsoft's Windows Blog for the full list of winners.

  • By The Numbers: The iPhone 4 vs EVO 4G

By The Numbers: The iPhone 4 vs EVO 4G

The Android vs iPhone fight is officially on. The EVO 4G fired the first shot last Friday when it launched nationwide on Sprint. The Android nation rallied behind the 4G super phone, which finally gave them a reason to be proud of their mobile platform of choice. They loudly pointed out all the EVO 4G's iPhone-killing specs: huge 4.3-inch screen, 4G hotspot mode, dual cameras, and cheap mobile plans. But the new iPhone is finally official after months of leaks and it's ready to fight although it's not exactly fair. The fourth generation iPhone isn't just going up against one phone. Nope, the EVO 4G is just Android's flavor of the month. A more powerful and sexy Android handset will likely steal its attention by the end of the summer and the iPhone 4 will have to stand against that model as well. Here we are anyway, though. It's time to let the two hottest phones on the planet stand toe-to-toe on specs and capabilities. Forget the user experience and all that nonsense. This is about screen resolution, network access, megapixels and all the fun stuff that forum users will be spouting off about for months.

  • ‘iPhone vs Android’ report finds Apple has three times Google’s market share

‘iPhone vs Android’ report finds Apple has three times Google’s market share

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/iPhone_vs_Android_report_finds_Apple_has_three_times_Googl'; It's oftentimes easy for us to get swept up in Android mania and forget that Google's mobile platform is still in its infancy. Then we get cold hard numbers like these -- showing iPhone OS owning 28 percent of the US smartphone market and closing in on RIM's leading 35 percent -- and we face up to the realization that Android handsets still account for less than one in every ten smartphones owned by Americans today. In spite of collecting 28 percent of all consumer smartphone purchases in the first quarter of 2010 (according to NPD), Google's OS was only able to climb up a couple of percentage points in terms of total market share, showing just how long a road lies ahead of its world-conquering plans. Guess that now explains why Apple's response to the earlier numbers was so nonchalant.

Other intriguing figures include a high rate of loyalty among iPhone OS and Android users, with 80 percent of the former and 70 percent of the latter expressing a preference for the same OS in their next phone -- both rather shaming Microsoft and RIM's numbers, which were a mediocre 34 and 47 percent, respectively. Funnily enough, despite its inflammatory title, this report finds Android and iPhone users are more similar to each other than anyone else -- an uncomfortable fact for both parties to deal with, we're sure. The source link contains some more demographic comparisons, so why not go check them out and drop some sage analysis for us in the comments?

While AT&T are still happy to be rolling in the money brought in from the iPhone exclusivity agreement, they aren't stupid enough to ignore the other mobile platform completely. • Four big carriers targeting LiMo phone releases this year

Four big carriers targeting LiMo phone releases this year

Hey, remember LiMo? Yeah, us neither, but the stealthiest of major mobile platform coalitions is back in the spotlight today on news that four top global carriers -- France Telecom's Orange, Telefonica (presumably via O2 and Movistar), Verizon, and Korea's SKT will all be launching LiMo-based phones by year-end. As a refresher, Big Red jointed the LiMo Foundation way back in 2008, so it's interesting to see that they're still looking to play ball; the platform has typically been billed as more of a carrier-facing initiative than a consumer-facing one, so realistically, end users are likely going to perceive nothing other than a little more dumbphone synergy across the lineup than they do now. Android, Windows Phone, iPhone, webOS... you guys are free to carry on.
