Infinity Ward defending the cost of MW2’s DLC

To say we were a tad flabbergasted that Modern Warfare 2's 5 map pack DLC costs $15 is about right. We weren't exactly outraged. It's just a video game after all and really doesn't matter that much. But $15 is a bit much for five maps with two of the recycled from previous Call of Duty games. Infinity Ward's Creative Strategist Rob Bowling disagrees. He calls it an investment. Well, Creative Strategist is just code for Public Relations so he kind of has to say that.

Those drones you use in Modern Warfare 2? They could be illegal in real life.

You know all those drones you kids use to rain grim death upon your unfortunate friends in Modern Warfare 2? Well, according to an American University law professor's Congressional testimony, they may be illegal under international law. Of course, they could be totally fine, too, it's just that nobody really knows for sure. That's probably not what the U.S. military wants to hear, given how much it has spent, and will spend, on drones.

Video: Soldier v. gamer in Modern Warfare 2 showdown

There’s no doubting it anymore: British TV is miles ahead of American TV. A show over there called, quite descriptively, “The Gadget Show,” pit a proper solider against the Xbox 360 controller-wielding host in a little Modern Warfare 2 showdown. I insist that you watch it.

Switzerland approaches complete ban on violent video games

That's funny, not one hour ago I mentioned that Australia had embraced the idea that adults have the capacity to make decisions vis-à-vis buying violent video games. Good ol' Switzerland, though, the darling of Europe, has passed a law essentially outlawing violent video games. I'd feign, well, not anger, but something, but it's Switzerland: how can you get mad at those guys?

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 sells many copies (plus bonus rant!)

God almighty do I have a bone to pick with Battlefield: Bad Company 2, which I bought on release day like a mark. The game is doing quite well for EA, having already sold 2.3 million units (and projected to sell 4 million by the end of the year). So that's ahead of expectations—it's a hit, have a party. The thing that annoys me (and Matt, for that matter) is the game's implementation of checkpoints. There's not nearly enough of them, and it's infuriating. I was very close to lighting my monitor on fire last night.

Modern Warfare 2 DLC map pack coming to PC March 30, Xbox and PS3 shortly after

We featured a so-called leaked video showing MW2's upcoming map pack last week but had no idea when players will get access to the new maps. Activision finally came clean, though, and announced that the DLC will hit PCs first on March 30, with consoles getting it sometime afterwards. Oh, and yeah, it will be named Stimulus Package just like the rumor stated, which is a kind of appropriate name, actually.

Modern Warfare 2’s No Russian level, now in machinima form

Is it too early in the morning for senseless violence? If you’re American, it’s never too early for violence, senseless or otherwise! Anyhow, some dude, presumably named Michael Barnes, put together a legitimately good machinima of No Russian, that stupid level from Modern Warfare 2 I can’t embed it, so you’ll have to actually go [...]

Ubisoft tries to spin DRM server crash, says the games are just too popular for their own good!

Oh, Ubisoft. You so quickly went from the guys that brought us Splinter Cell (young people: Splinter Cell used to be cool in the early to mid 2000s) to the guys that have created the stupidest DRM known to man. Oh, and you're also incapable of telling the truth. The authentication servers for Assassin's Creed II (I thought that comes out tomorrow?) and Silent Hunter V were completely inaccessible for a number of people yesterday. Why? Ubisoft claimed it was because of "exceptional demand," but the real reason is that some punk kids (I assume it's punk kids) decided to launch a denial of service attack. I suppose, technically, a denial of service attack involves, on some level, demand...

Let’s talk about Battlefield: Bad Company 2

Most of your friendly neighborhood CrunchGear writers have played Battlefield: Bad Company 2 for at least a little bit. We have different opinions about the game, but I think we all like it to a degree. I bought it for two reason: the Eurogamer review was glowing, and I wanted to support Modern Warfare 2's most direct competitor. Genres grow stale when one game/publisher so utterly dominates it, so $50 EA's way hopefully will go toward keeping the FPS genre as fresh as it can be. I mean, there's but so many ways you can make "put-cursor-over-man's-face-and-left-click" before you're like, "Man, I'm bored, let's go bowling."

Infinity Ward vs. Activision: Whose side are you on?

I’m sorry, but I’m absolutely loving this Infinity Ward-Activision brouhaha. Here you have one of the most respected developers out there at odds with a publisher that must seriously have no idea what it’s doing. If Activision thinks it can slap the Call of Duty name on any ol’ game, made by any ol’ developer, [...]
