Morpho Smart Select: New image software selects best shots automatically

Japan-based Morpho announced [JP, PDF] "Morpho Smart Select" today, a piece of software that makes it possible to pick the best shot out of a set of pictures taken with a digital camera. Morpho Smart Select makes the decision based on a number of different factors, including color contrast, position of the object or person in the image, the smile of a person and focus.

HTC EVO 4G performance capped at 30fps

The super spec'ed HTC EVO 4G has been taking a bit of a beating lately -- what with its woeful battery performance and exaggerated sales claims -- but this latest report falls on the far side of peculiar. Users over at XDA are reporting that the framerate of the device seems to be capped at 30fps in both 2D and 3D modes. I say "capped" because a device with these kinds of specs should be hitting much higher framerates.

Little Bee, Rustic, Sugar Drop: Panasonic rolls out three new e-bikes in Japan

Japan is to get another three electric bikes, two of which are being marketed as "sporty", while one is targeted specifically at women. All three models are made by Panasonic (which announced one of the coolest e-bikes ever just a few weeks ago). The two sport bikes [JP] are called the "Rustic" (BE-ENHL63/pictured above) and the "Little Bee" (BE-ENHB03/pictured below). Technically, both models are very similar, offering an assisted travel range of 32km (Rustic) to 37km (Little Bee), three different driving modes (eco, power, and automatic), and a charging time of about three hours for the lithium-ion battery.

    Meteo360: Augmented weather reality

While I'm not sure I really need weather in an augmented reality shell, I'm sure, after waking up in a strange, sunny city after a long bender, it could be useful to point your iPhone to the sky and get your current location and weather report. Barring that, it's a nice proof of concept. The app, called Meteo360, has three modes. When you hold the iPhone flat it shows a weather map. When you hold it up to the sky you see the city you're in and the current weather, and when you hold it upright it turns on the camera and overlays weather information over the current scene.

    BE-ENV: Panasonic Japan’s expensive, cool e-bike

We've covered plenty of electric bicycles from Japan in the past, but let's be honest: Most of them are really ugly, for example these (technically interesting) models Sanyo introduced three weeks ago. But this new Panasonic e-bike, the BE-ENV [JP], looks rather cool and is something I could see the younger (and male) population actually using, too.

    Hands-on with the Rubik’s Slide

What good is a Rubik's Slide if you can't take off all the stickers and convince your mom that you're a super genius? Interestingly, however, the Rubik's Slide doesn't use stickers and it's actually much harder than it looks. You basically twist and turn the device to move the lights into various configurations and there are multiple modes, including lightning round, to keep you occupied. My wife picked this thing up last night and she noticed she was about to get addicted and so put it back down.

  • Yamaha Japan announces 5 new electric bikes

Yamaha Japan announces 5 new electric bikes

While electric bikes are gaining more and more ground in Japan, the situation in the rest of the world (at least for highly advanced models) is quite different. These vehicles seem to have a hard time in America in particular, although there's anecdotal evidence the concept does have the potential to catch on in the US as well - basically speaking. But most of the makers of these bikes, powerhouses such as Panasonic or Sanyo, never tested waters outside Japan. Yamaha, another such company, now announced [JP] a total of five electric bikes over the weekend, all of which are likely to never find their way outside Japan. The new models are part of Yamaha's series of PAS electric bikes.

  • Windows Mobile and Xbox Live coming together, according to Microsoft job ad

Windows Mobile and Xbox Live coming together, according to Microsoft job ad

The hints were already pretty strong on this one, but now Microsoft has come right out and said it, albeit in a job posting -- the Xbox Live gaming platform is extending beyond the console and specifically onto WinMo phones. Seeking a Principal Program Manager who would be responsible for bringing "Xbox Live enabled games to Windows Mobile," Redmond is particularly interested in "avatar integration, social interaction, and multi-screen experiences." That leaves an awful lot of room for imagination as to how the two modes of gaming will complement each other, but at least we now (sort of) know that it's going to happen.

    [Thanks, Jessy]

Honda makes the ultimate Paperboy gaming system

Bicycle safety wasn't an issue for me growing up. I lived in a quiet suburban subdivision on a cul-de-sac. Plus, my mom is an insurance agent and so she made sure that I always had the latest safety equipment. (E.g. shin pads, wrist pads, elbow pads, helmet, gloves, and a cup) It's a damn good thing that Honda didn't make this bicycle simulator back in the Eighties. She would have shipped the thing in from Japan, and I would have never been able to leave the house.

  • New Meizu M8 beta firmware looking desirable, bordering on original

New Meizu M8 beta firmware looking desirable, bordering on original

    Filed under:

It's been almost three years since we saw our first taste of the Meizu M8, which was at that point a fairly shameless rip of the iPhone, albeit mostly theoretical. In the ensuing years we've seen an ever-changing OS and two generations of hardware, but we might be finally coming upon something worth lusting after. The new M8 Firmware 1.0.0.1 beta has been demo'd on video, and seems to be taking some new cues from Android and Windows Mobile -- along with some original and sexy UI elements of Meizu's own devising -- that really set it apart from its iPhone-aping days of yore. We're particularly fond of the unlock screen, which has three icons at the bottom that can be swiped-up like an Android app drawer, but with quick access to phone and messages, similar to how Windows Mobile 6.5 can be unlocked into multiple modes. Apparently the OS is only 50% ready, and there's no telling how many changes we might see between now and when it's finished, but for now we're fairly impressed. Video is after the break.

    Hands-on with the Panasonic GF-1 M4/3 camera

I’ve been excited about four-thirds cameras for a while now. They seem like a great idea - DSLR power in a point-and-shoot package. However, after the Olympus E-P1 I’m worried that manufacturers are treating these cameras as beta hardware and the real models won’t be stable for a few years. That said, I’m still interested [...]
