Windows Marketplace now available for Windows Mobile 6.0 and 6.1

Long before Windows Marketplace launched on Windows Mobile 6.5 as Microsoft's answer to the App-Store-Craze, we knew it would be extended down into Windows Mobile 6.0 and 6.1 - the only question was "When?. The answer, it seems, is today. Microsoft has just announced that the Marketplace is available to 6.0 and 6.1 users beginning immediately.

  • Support for universal micro-USB phone chargers grows with ITU approval

Support for universal micro-USB phone chargers grows with ITU approval

    Filed under:

The entire wireless industry has been congealing around micro-USB as a universal charging standard for a while now, and we've taken yet another important step toward completely ridding the world of bizarre proprietary connectors (you know what we're talking about, Samsung) with ITU ratification this week. The UN-backed International Telecommunication Union isn't just making the move to make our lives a little less hellish, though -- it's also a strategic environmental move on a couple fronts, since universal chargers mean consumers will be able to hold on to a single charger over the life of several phones and modern chargers are far more power efficient than models that are even just a couple years old. The ITU move isn't binding or compulsory, but there's enough momentum behind micro-USB at this point that it's pretty much going to happen for any phone you'd ever consider buying going forward, and many of the big players have already hopped on the bandwagon. We won't lie, we won't miss the days of buying a $40 car charger that powers, like, two LG models.

  • It’s time for the MLB to adopt instant replay

It’s time for the MLB to adopt instant replay

Look, I'd be lying if I said I followed baseball this season. I'm a Mets guy, and you just know that, once April hits, you're in for a reasonably OK season, but one that just looses steam as the months go by. So why bother? What I can say, though, is that, given all this evidence, it's about time that baseball adopt the instant replay. Correct calls outweigh everything else. We have the technology!

Boxee Watches $6 Million More In Funding Stream In

Boxee, the media center software startup, has won a lot of fans with its open approach to streaming content. And as a result it has won some more money, to the tune of a $6 million second round, led by Boston's General Catalyst Partners. The new money will be used for growth: Both expanding the team and expanding the service's reach in the market, we're told. But why now? After all, Boxee raised its first round of funding just 8 months ago, a $4 million round with Union Square Ventures and Spark Capital investing. "We've seen a lot of momentum over the past couple of months. It seemed like it made sense to go ahead [with a new round]," Boxee's new head of marketing Andrew Kippen tells us.

Apple claims over 1 million iPhone 3GS devices sold, quotes Steve Jobs

Earlier today, reports started flowing in about Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster claiming 750,000 iPhone 3GS devices were sold over the weekend. In a news release, however, Apple claims that that number is off by more than 1/4, saying that sales actually exceeded 1 million units. In addition, the company says six million customers have downloaded the new iPhone 3.0 software in the first five days since its release. Remarkably, Apple CEO Steve Jobs is quoted at the beginning of the press release - something we haven't seen for quite a while and this after a weekend during which it was uncovered the man had a liver transplant a couple of months ago - saying: "Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning. With over 50,000 applications available from Apple's revolutionary App Store, iPhone momentum is stronger than ever."
