  • Not everyone wants their hand held when PC gaming

Not everyone wants their hand held when PC gaming

One of the bigger stories this past week was OnLive heading to the UK. The service promises to make PC gaming more accessible by hosting all of the hardware—you simply supply a broadband connection and a Web browser, and you'll be playing the likes of Mass Effect 2 in no time. If it works as described, great. There's nothing wrong with exposing PC gaming to more people.

ATP SSD connect to the USB header on your motherboad

This is brilliant. I'm not 100% sure what the practical application is yet, but I think I want one. ATP built an SLC NAND-based solid state drive designed to plug directly into the USB header on your motherboard. Great idea right?

Opening the Macbook Pro 15-inch Unibody

The flaymasters at iFixIt have torn down the MacBook Pro 15-inch Unibody, revealing all of its terrible secrets including, but not limited to, a motherboard, an AirPort Express card, and some other stuff. Come to think of it, there are no terrible secrets. Just a bigger battery and new wireless antenna. Interestingly, there really weren’t any [...]

Changes: PC enthusiasts to make up less of PC gaming market

The changes in PC gaming mean that, by 2013, "PC enthusiasts" will only account for 30 percent of the dollars spent in the field. Right now, "PC enthusiasts" account for nearly half of every dollar spent, or 46 percent. Enthusiasts are people who read all those hardware sites with meticulous benchmarks and who have no problem dropping $300 on a motherboard or graphics card. I guess that makes me an enthusiast.

  • USB 3.0 adoption could be slowed because of lack of demand

USB 3.0 adoption could be slowed because of lack of demand

Willing to spend $300+ on a fancy motherboard just so you can get USB 3.0 support? Yeah, that might not be such a good idea, if only because Intel is in no hurry to integrate the spec into its chipsets. That means companies have to go out of their way to offer USB 3.0 on their systems. The odds of seeing USB 3.0 on a cheap-o netbook, then, are pretty much non-existent.

  • Western Digital Velociraptor SATA 3.0 hard drives are the fastest money can buy

Western Digital Velociraptor SATA 3.0 hard drives are the fastest money can buy

It's like Christmas morning for PC enthusiasts today. Western Digital has released its SATA 3.0 (that's a maximum transfer rate of 6.0 Gb/s, which translates to 768 MB/s) Velociraptor hard drives. The Velociraptor name basically means "OMG FAST!" when it comes to hard drives. The thing is, unlike the last time Western Digital released Velociraptor hard drives, two years ago, solid state drives are on the market, and they're clearly faster than even the fastest traditional hard drive. Doesn't matter: if you're looking for absolute, top-of-the-line performance when it comes to traditional hard drives, it looks like these new Velociraptors are the way to go.

iFixit tears down the DSi XL

No Tegra chip for you! iFixit tore down the Nintendo DSi XL and found, not surprisingly, a bigger DSi. It’s running the DSi’s ARM processor and the motherboard is big enough to fit in the case, but that’s about it. Click through for more findings: * Nintendo is again using a custom ARM CPU, manufactured in [...]

  • Asus has the first Nvidia Optimus laptops~!

Asus has the first Nvidia Optimus laptops~!

Kudos, I guess, to Asus, being the first manufacturer to incorporate Nvidia's Optimus technology into actual products. The Taiwan-based company has announced five laptops (note: I refuse to use the term "notebook" when referring to laptops; I think the name "netbook" is dumb, too, so at least I'm consistent) that range in size from 13.3 inches to 17.3 inches, all of which use Optimus. "What is Optimus?" I'm glad you asked! It switches between the Nvidia GPU and the Intel integrated GPU as the situation warrants. So, using Firefox? Let the Intel handle it. Playing World of Warcraft? Nvidia takes over. It's not too hard to understand.

The fastest netbook in the world

This is technically a DIY project, but I don't know how many people are actually capable of doing this modification. What's so scary about it? I dunno, shoehorning a Core Duo processor into a Sony Vaio UX17, one of the smallest netbooks available. Obviously this is a one off, so don't expect to see it for sale any time soon.

It so sad when they expose the guts of devices like the Chumby One. The Chumby has personality, you know? You kind of feel for it? Oh well. iFixIt tore the Chumby into little bits, splaying the processor, screen, and even the speaker for all to see. There’s not much to see here but the [...]

Announced at CeBit in March, the Level 10 was designed with the help of BMW DesignWorks, and it is amazing. MaximumPC got one first, but they were kind enough so share some unboxing pictures with the world.

But this new development warrants our attention: is the PS3 Slim slower than the PS3 Fat (or is that Phat? Help me, Internet.)? A bunch of videos posted to YouTube certainly seem to indicate as such.
