Engadget Podcast 146 – 05.15.2009

Josh Topolsky and Paul Miller walk into a bar, but the bar is a recording studio.
The bartender, who is the recording engineer, asks, "Why the long faces?"
"Sigh," Paul says, and looks down at his feet. "Nothing but a buncha crummy phone rumors and probably fake slim PS3 pictures this week."
"It's hard to podcast when there's no exciting news to podcast about," says Josh, staring off into the distance.
The door slams open: it's Nilay Patel. "I know what'll cheer you guys up!" he says as he slams three stiff drinks down on the table. "Trashing AT&T about the Slingplayer app!"
Smiles creep over Josh and Paul's faces. They nod, the engineer hits the record button, and history is made: The Engadget Podcast, volume 146.
Update: We added a video feed of your charming hosts from the recording studio after the break. It's definitely an experiment at this stage, so let us know what you think!

Hold the phone: T-Mobile G1 v2 to really be the Samsung Bigfoot?
Posted on May 11, 2009 | No CommentsWell well -- it looks like whatever Android handset Motorola's cooking up might not be the T-Mobile G1 v2 after all. Mobile-review just published this shot of a Samsung Bigfoot with a slider QWERTY keyboard, and we've got to say, it looks a hell of a lot more like the device in that leaked T-Mobile roadmap than that rendered Moto unit. (It also looks a lot like the Samsung Beat DJ, but that's neither here nor there.) Not only that, but there's also an early spec sheet and another image of a candybar set called the Spica -- apart from the slider, Bigfoot and Spica are nearly identical lower-end versions of the I7500, with three-inch screens, three megapixel cameras, and Android 2.0 "Donut" preloaded. That certainly throws a monkey wrench into what we had thought was a neatly-tied little bow, but we've got to say we're stoked to see so many Android sets appearing all at once. Now if someone could just tell us when and where these would ship, we'd be all set. Spec sheet after the break.

Motorola’s first Android phone to be the T-Mobile G1 v2?
Posted on May 11, 2009 | No CommentsOkay, so T-Mobile confirmed on Saturday that it's launching "multiple" Android devices from "three partners" later this year, and since most people assume the HTC Magic / Sapphire / myTouch / whatever and the Samsung I7500 are pretty much locked in, speculation has generally centered around that mysterious G1 v2 and the identity of the third partner -- and it looks like it's going to be Motorola. Not only did commenter Someperson notice that the button labels on the alleged G1 v2 are basically identical to those on other recently-launched Moto phones, Boy Genius Report says today that they can "more or less confirm" the v2 will be Schaumburg's first Android set -- a development that lines up perfectly with last month's rumors of a slider QWERTY piece. Yep, it all fits together nicely, except for the fact that HTC is oddly out of the loop on the sequel to the G1 -- but since T-Mobile owns that particular trademark, it can do whatever it wants, you know? Hopefully we'll find out more soon -- if that sketchy leaked roadmap is correct, we'll be seeing this guy in the fall.
Update: Or... the G1 v2 could really be the Samsung Bigfoot. It's a mystery for now, we'll let you know.Filed under: Cellphones

Motorola announces W7 Active Edition for fitness and sporting enthusiasts
Posted on May 11, 2009 | No Comments
Sure, we were a little hard on it back when we first saw its rumored, horrifying existence but it turns out our nightmare scenario has come true: the W7 exists. The one we're seeing above however, has had at least a little sexy added to it -- ditching the three-part color scheme for blackish silver -- and it also has 3G which lessens the pain a little. The fitness and sporting targeted handset sports an accelerometer, which can be used to do all sorts of things like silence the ringer and pause or restart the tunes on a run, and it also boasts a pedometer for those of you who like to enumerate every step you take. The W7 (which will be available in white as well) is going to be available by June of this year in Asia and Latin America, but there's no word on pricing or availability elsewhere. There is one more shot after the break -- if you dare.Continue reading Motorola announces W7 Active Edition for fitness and sporting enthusiasts

Motorola’s first Android phone(s) to have sliding QWERTY?
Posted on April 29, 2009 | No CommentsMotorola needed to release an Android set about six months ago, but we know these things take time -- and if it's any consolation, it sounds like the first fruits of the labor could be pretty awesome. Boy Genius Report now claims that the rumored landscape QWERTY slider Calgary will be the first Android-powered Moto device to go commercial, though it's not clear when (or where) it'll hit shelves; given the device's seemingly unusual appearance and the possibility (foolish hope?) that they'll be infusing some customizations into the UI, they might just have an angle to attack offerings from HTC and others. That's not all for the Android department, though -- it looks like there might also be a portrait QWERTY slider in the works for the third quarter codenamed "Ironman," pictured, which will pack 3G, WiFi, and some sort of high-res camera. In other words, a solidly high-end device. Bring it on, guys.
Moving on, it seems the lovely full touchscreen Flash has been canned, along with the Krave's successor, the Inferno -- possibly further confirmation that Moto's throwing virtually all its weight into the Android camp at this point. Finally, rumor has it that a device codenamed "Rolex" is in the labs -- and as you might've guessed, it uses the Aura's astonishingly awesome ultra-high-res circular display. Odds are this is another luxury phone given its aspirational name and the screen being used, but a poor guy can dream.

“Calgary” will be Moto’s first Android handset
Posted on April 29, 2009 | No CommentsWant something that looks like Motorola’s aborted Sidekick Slide? That runs Android? That has buttons like the RAZR? Well, you’re in luck because Moto is planning to launch the Android-powered Calgary on Verizon. The QWERTY-slider looks like it has some promise. The styling is cool, the OS is proven, and things can only go up for [...] -
David Beckham bends it like a Terminator for Motorola’s Aura
Posted on April 17, 2009 | No CommentsNever before in the history of humankind has a company that's been doing so badly had such an enormous amount of money to waste. Enter Motorola, and, consequently, their new Aura advertisement featuring megahunk David Beckham doing what he does best: absolutely nothing. There's not much that we can say that the Terminator-inspired ad won't say for us, so putter on after the break and catch the ad itself, plus Beckster beefcaking it up like a pro and sharing his innermost insights on Moto's $2,000 phone.

Motorola Evoke QA4 gets official
Posted on March 30, 2009 | No Comments
We first caught sight of this one back in February, and again earlier this month courtesy of the FCC, but it looks like Motorola's QA4 has now finally gotten fully official and, well, there it is. Now formally dubbed the Motorola Evoke QA4, this one packs a decently-sized 2.8-inch WQVGA touchscreen, along with quad-band CDMA connectivity (plus EVDO Rev A), a 2 megapixel camera, 256MB of internal memory, a microSD card slot for expansion, aGPS, stereo Bluetooth, and, of course, that stylish sliding keypad. Unfortunately, Motorola still hasn't gotten official with a price or an exact release date, but the company is promising to get it out the door sometime in the second quarter of this year. Head on past the break for a closer look at the phone all closed up.Continue reading Motorola Evoke QA4 gets official

Motorola QA4 touchscreen slider clears the FCC
Posted on March 16, 2009 | No Comments
Motorola hasn't exactly been doing that great a job keeping this one secret, but it looks like its QA4 handset is doing its best to make itself known, and it has now made its latest, still-not-official showing courtesy of the FCC. As you can see above, the phone looks quite a bit different than those earlier unofficial photos, but the actual specs remain largely unchanged, with it boasting what appears to be the same 2.8-inch touchscreen, along with a tri-band CDMA / EVDO radio, aGPS, Bluetooth 2.0, a camera (we're assuming the same 2-megapixels), and a microSD card slot for expansion. Somewhat interestingly, there's no indication of that rumored accelerometer in the user manual, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's not still tucked in there somewhere. Hopefully Motorola will clear that, and a whole lot more, up when it finally gets official with the handset, which we're guessing should be happening sooner rather than later.

Motorola Touch ZINE HD is likely fake, hearts break around the world
Posted on March 3, 2009 | No CommentsWe knew it was too good to be true. Don't get us wrong, this new ZN300 is alright, but Motorola knows as well as we do that this isn't the device people are looking for Schaumburg to produce right now; the company's engineering talent isn't in question, but what the people want is a superphone that proves there's some design talent in the house, too. That's why this supposed Touch ZINE HD got such a strong positive reaction the past few days that we'd all held out hope that there was a shred of reality to it, but unfortunately, Androidphones.com makes a very convincing argument that it's almost certainly poppycock: looks like our boy Yury Cassini here took the back of a ZN5, combined it with the blanked front of a E8, and -- voila! -- there's the device the Android-loving world is waiting for. In our last piece about this device, we implored to Moto that "if this isn't real, can whatever it is you're working on right this second and do precisely this instead," and as we sit here with broken hearts and shattered dreams, the advice most definitely stands.Filed under: Cellphones, Handhelds
