Live-action “Akira” is coming, and the Hughes brothers will direct it
Posted on June 23, 2010 | No CommentsOne of the best manga ever created, Akira, is going to the big screen. And this time, it won't be an anime (like the one from 1988) but a live-action film. We first reported about plans to shoot the live-action remake, whose rights were bought by Leonardo DiCaprio's production company, Appian Way, back in February 2008. The idea was scrapped a few months later, until New York Magazine wrote in February this year the studio is in negotiations with the Hughes Brothers (who directed "The Book Of Eli") to direct the movie.

The new Roku Netflix experience adds search, Instant Queue modification features
Posted on May 5, 2010 | No Comments
Woot! Netflix for Roku's wee little box will be updated "soon" for Netflix subscribers, adding search functionality that the service badly needed.
As you can see from this jaunty video, the entire UI has been improved and the standard "press left to see all of the other movies" is gone, giving you more movies per page and a considerably more streamlined experience. The best thing? You can now add movies to your queue from the box.
Click through for a video and a bit more info.

DirecTV would like to remind you that they will have Avatar on time, unlike Netflix
Posted on April 19, 2010 | No Comments
We're starting to see the results of Netflix's deal with the devil. DirecTV really wants to make sure you know that while Netflix won't have Fox and Time Warner's movies at release day, they will be on PPV. Is that the sound of someone rubbing their hands together in a greedy way?

Yes~! There will be Independence Day sequels, Will Smith will be all over them
Posted on March 31, 2010 | No CommentsNice, another sci-fi movie story. 'tis a grand day, indeed. The story is a two-parter: one, there will be an Independence Day 2 and Independence Day 3. That's insane enough. Two: Will Smith will be in both. Loving the creativity coming out of Hollywood these days.

Video on demand: The patron saint of Tribeca Film Festival?
Posted on March 4, 2010 | No CommentsIs video on demand the key to making your spiffy indie movie the next Huge Success? Depends on who you ask. The Tribeca Film Festival will experiment with VOD this year, having signed deals with cable providers like Comcast, Verizon FIOS, and Cablevision (a New York-area provider, for those of you who've never heard of it before) to create a Tribeca VOD channel. The thing is, even though putting a film on VOD is a guaranteed way to increase its exposure, there seems to be a bit of a stigma attached there.

Yes! Another Ron and Fez Twitter party, this time for The Oscars!
Posted on March 4, 2010 | No CommentsRon and Fez, the fantastic Sirius XM radio show that makes my day every day, will host the world's first second Twitter party on Sunday! It's a follow-up to last month's Super Bowl Halftime Show Twitter Party, which was pretty much a gigantic success. What's being celebrated this time around? The Oscars (gi gi gi)! It gets even better: a live radio show will actually accompany the Twitter party. I'm excited.

Apple and global carriers raise OTA iPhone app download limit to 20MB
Posted on February 18, 2010 | No CommentsOne thing I really love about the iPhone is discovering a new app while I'm out on the town, ignoring friends and family for my phone. I'll check out reviews, look at some screen shots and take the plunge. Then the unexpected happens: the app won't download because the file size is too big.

And now Redbox will have to wait 28 days for new Warner Bros. DVDs
Posted on February 17, 2010 | No CommentsWarner Bros. has agreed a new deal with Redbox that will give Redbox access to its DVDs, but only 28 days after the retail release. The move is designed to encourage people to actually buy the shiny, new DVDs when they come out. Why is that a problem?

The next frontier: Converting 2D to 3D
Posted on January 30, 2010 | No Comments
Remember at CES when all of the companies were like "We'll convert your 2D to 3D?" Yeah, ummm, nah. What will happen is that studios will back-convert some of their old movies - or movies not shot in 3D - to 3D using a time-consuming, partially automated process. Like in love, the first cut is the deepest:
The first step is to separate the shot into somewhere between two and eight layers of depth. Take, for example, an image of a man standing in front of a brick wall, with a blue sky behind the wall. The graphic artist might separate the shot into three layers: the man, the wall, and the sky. Then, he would take each layer and draw contour lines around any object that appeared there. He'd start by marking depth lines on the man using a computer, turning the image into a sort of topographical map. He'd repeat the process for any objects in the other layers. (If there were a bird in the sky, he'd draw lines there, too.)

Modern movies set adrift as Atari games
Posted on January 12, 2010 | No CommentsAh, nostalgia. Your gentle touch knows no limits. Today you’ve taken modern movies and shown us what they would have looked like as video games from 30 years ago. Graphic designer Robert Penney has a set of images on his blog categorized as “Retro Games With Modern Themes.” There’s The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo [...] -
Poll: Do you plan on seeing Avatar this weekend
Posted on December 18, 2009 | No CommentsYou probably already know that this is Avatar’s opening weekend. It’s a big movie to say it lightly. James Cameron invested a lot of time and resources into it and some say the future of 3D movies are riding on its blue alien shoulders. But do you plan on using two hours and 40 minutes [...] -
Why are we so attracted to disaster movies like 2012
Posted on November 16, 2009 | No CommentsHere's another topic I'm stealing from Ron and Fez: disaster movies. We sorta discussed this a few times already, but the movie 2012 broke all sorts of records at the weekend. I'd make a big stink about Americans having zero taste, but if I could make $80 zillion per movie sleeping through my lines like the cast of 2012 presumably did, you can guarantee I'd be right there alongside them. That aside, the topic on the radio show was this: what is it about disaster movies that make people so excited?

xkcd charts characters from LOTR, Star Wars, Jurassic Park & more, I waste my morning
Posted on November 2, 2009 | No CommentsDamn, xkcd comics. I got up early this morning – with a little help from the time change – with good intentions. That was until I saw the new xkcd comic that charts character grouping throughout some of the most epic movies. I wasted my morning looking at this damn thing and you probably will [...] -
Transformers 2 sells 7.5 million DVD & Blu-ray discs. Can’t you people find a better movie to buy?
Posted on October 29, 2009 | No Comments
This is just wrong. I'll admit, I didn't enjoy "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen". I thought the plot was weak and contrived, and I was slightly offended by the dumbing down of the film (robot urination and racial stereotypes? give me a break). I realize that the original "Transformers" wasn't exactly the height of cinematic art, but it was better then the sequel.
