    We'd heard earlier that ngmoco's new game Eliminate: Gun Range was one of the first apps to really take advantage of the iPhone 4's gyroscope, and now that we've had a chance to play with it, we've got say there's a ton of potential here. E:GR is itself just a simple shooter, but the gyroscope adds what seems like nearly 1:1 motion control to the proceedings -- and since you're moving the display itself, it almost feels like augmented reality. It's hard to explain, since it's so unlike any mobile UI experience we've encountered before, but as soon as we tried it our brains pretty much exploded with possibilities -- we're thinking drastic improvements to actual augmented reality apps like Layar, all kinds of crazy flight simulator games, much more refined GPS apps, you name it.     We first blogged about Ikaros, a solar powered "space yacht" developed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), in September last year. The idea was to use solar photons to propel satellites in outer space to boost energy-efficiency. That yacht was eventually launched on May 21, and now we have the first pictures of Ikaros moving through outer space.

    Hacker cons HTC Touch Pro 2 into providing multitouch, other WinMo devices tooNever, ever doubt the skill and determination of the guys over at xda-developers, capable of cracking any device and bringing you fresh ROMs to brighten up your stuffy gadgets. This latest bit of wunder-code isn't a full new image, rather a tiny WinMo app that does something magical: enables multitouch on single-touch resistive screens. How? Sadly developer OndraSter isn't saying just yet, but it relies on leaving one finger in place and moving the other, so perhaps it detects a jump in touch position and treats it as a pinch gesture. In the videos below it's shown working in Opera, but should work anywhere, and while the developer filmed these on an HTC Touch Pro 2 he says this will work on just about any WinMo 6 or 6.1 device. The app has sadly not been released to the wild just yet, but we hope OndraSter drops some binaries soon before he starts a riot among Windows Mobile users with more than one finger.

    AT&T's made it pretty clear how this upgrade sitch is going to go down for existing customers moving to an iPhone 4 on the 24th of the month, but if you want to double-check and make sure you're good to go (we can't blame you), there's an easy way that was briefly mentioned yesterday: dial *639# on your current phone. You'll be returned a text message from AT&T detailing your situation -- either you'll be told you can get a full upgrade price (meaning $199 / $299 for the 16GB and 32GB, respectively) or you'll be eligible at some particular date in the future. Not all's lost in the latter case -- you can still pay $200 more for the phone as an "early upgrade," which is less than the no-commitment price of $599 / $699. We'll have a more comprehensive breakdown in our full iPhone 4 guide coming later today, so stay tuned!

    Hoowee! Look at this thing! What you're looking at here is a very early prototype of an upcoming Sony Ericsson 5-inch, full-QWERTY Android phone, and I gotta say, I kinda like it. However, 5 inches does make it a bit of a beast, moving the device squarely into too-big-to-be-a-phone-too-small-to-be-a-tablet territory... but look at that keyboard! It looks totally typeable!

    HDMI can be found on a few netbooks right now, but it's set to become standard next year when Intel's Cedar Trail-M platform hits the tiny lappies. Most of the current netbooks with HDMI are built around Nvidia's ION GPU platform, which also drives up the cost. But by moving HDMI support to the CPU, it should come on nearly every netbook.

    Rumors have run rampant that the head of Motorola's soon-to-be-independent Mobile Devices division, Sanjay Jha, has plans to high-tail back to the Californian home from whence he came (where his family still resides, coincidentally) once the split wraps up. That may still be the case, but it looks like it's not necessarily happening any time soon coming off comments this week from the dude himself. In comments to shareholders on Monday, Jha said that "the mobile devices headquarters is in [Chicago suburb] Libertyville, and that will continue at the point of the split," qualifying the statement by saying that he'd "evaluate [their] needs" afterward but that doesn't "know" that relocating the business "is a driving priority right now." Moving the business clearly has personal benefits for Jha -- not to mention likely brings a refreshed Motorola access to a greater pool of high-tech talent in the Valley -- but regardless of what happens, he says that he doesn't think the company will "dramatically change [its] space in Chicago." Might not be a bad idea to fly all the engineers away from those nasty Chicago winters for a couple months, anyway, right?
