HomePipe streams your iTunes to Android, other files too

Need another way to get your tunes (whether they be i-prefixed or not) onto your Android celly? HomePipe is the latest, a service offering easy access to files on your home computer via your cellphone. It's been available for Apple devices for some time now, but a recently added Android app extends the reach of its plumbing system. That mobile app works in conjunction with a desktop version acting as a server, pushing photos, documents, and lots of types of media -- including iTunes. HomePipe claims this makes it the "first to ever stream home iTunes music to Google's Android," but having played with Michael Robertson's MP3tunes service, which uploads your music library to the cloud and allows access from Android handsets, we're happy to assure the service that it is at least the second. Still, it sounds mighty handy, and for the bargain price of free it's definitely worth a shot. I dedicate this next post to all the budget-minded Windows Mobile fans out there. Here's looking at you, kids.
We just got word that the LG Fathom will be released on June 3rd. For those not in the know, the Fathom is the last of its kind: a 1GHz Windows Mobile 6.5 powered handset.
Other features include a dazzling 3.2MP autofocus camera (sans flash, it seems), QWERTY keypad, WiFi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1, and a 3.2" screen of unknown resolution.

As with just about every other gratis backup service on the web, there's a catch you should know about with mSpot's latest endeavor. The free limit is right around 2GB (exact size is TBD), so if you've got more than a second generation iPod's worth of audio, this here service will only serve as a tease. For those who fall under that threshold, there's plenty to love, and if you're down for ponying up, you'll be able to secure 10GB for $2.99 per month or 20GB for $4.99 per month. Launched today at Google I/O, this "freemium" music cloud service essentially syncs your entire music library (either in iTunes or a user-designated arrangement of folders) with mSpot's servers -- provided your library is less than 20GB, of course -- and then makes it available anywhere. Phones and other computers should have no issue tapping in (though only Android will be supported out of the gate), and the app itself runs quietly in the background in order to check for new additions / subtractions and mirror said changes in your online library. For now, the service is available by invitation only through mspot.com, with public availability slated for next month. Size limits aside, the service worked well for us in our limited testing, though that first 20GB upload is a real pain over Time Warner Cable's obviously capped Road Runner internet. Oh, and if you're bummed about not being guaranteed an invite today, you shouldn't be. Hit that source link and enter "engadget" as the password -- the first 500 get immediate access, but once they're gone, they're gone.

(We're all pretty keen on the Zune HD for whatever reason.) Those of you with iPhones are pretty much stuck using iTunes, but what's to stop someone from saying, “You know, I've used an iPod in one form or another for the past five years, so I think I'm gonna try something new for a change.”? Obviously, being the first (and only?) online music store that has The Beatles will be something of a coup, for at least the first day. You can picture the articles and posts now: “Apple meets Apple: Beatles on iTunes,” “iTunes just won my $9.99: Beatles on iTunes,” etc.
