NASA turns iPhone into chemical sensor, can an App Store rejection be far away?

People have been trying to turn cellphones into medical and atmospheric scanners for some time now, but when it's NASA stepping up to the plate with a little device to monitor trace amounts of chemicals in the air, it's hard to not start thinking we might finally have a use for all those tricorder ringtones. Developed by a team of researchers at the Ames Research Center led by Jing Li, the device is a small chip that plugs into the bottom of an iPhone and uses 16 nanosensors to detect the concentration of gasses like ammonia, chlorine, and methane. To what purpose exactly this device will serve and why the relatively closed iPhone was chosen as a development platform are mysteries we're simply not capable of answering. Damn it, man, we're bloggers not scientists!

Purported Motorola roadmap uncovers Sholes Tablet, Motus and other mythical mysteries

Okay folks, this is the moment where hauling a spoonful of NaCl down the chute would be highly recommended. DialAPhone seems to have unearthed what looks like a Q4 2009 - Q1 2010 Motorola roadmap, and while the finds are certainly intriguing, we're still hesitant to believe this thing is legit. For starters, this is obviously a European plan, so what we're viewing here may never make the tedious journey across the pond anyway. Secondly, how many of you honestly believe Moto's cooking up a Sholes Tablet? Exactly. That said, we'd be the first to drool should that device (or the Motus and / or Zeppelin) launch early next year, and you can bet your bottom dollar that we'll be scraping the floor for details when CES kicks off in just a few months.

iPhone Dev Team Releases 3GS Jailbreak

The iPhone Dev Team has released their much anticipated iPhone 3GS unlock. Last week we reported on George Hotz, the teenage hacker, who released a Windows only version of the jailbreak, and then a Mac version over the weekend. The iPhone Dev Team jailbreak isn't much different then Hotz's version — besides the point that the iPhone Dev Team released it. The Dev Team is a group of hackers dedicated to unlocking the iPhone and exposing all of its wonderful mysteries.
The 3GS jailbreak, codenamed "ultrasn0w," uses the same procedure as the iPhone 3G unlock process. The Dev Team in a blog post also mentions that if you have the correct personalized (signed) dfu/img3 files, then you'll always be able to jailbreak, even if you install Apple's firmware update.
